CHAPTER 11 FIELDWORK
3 MUSKETEERS BIOGRAPHY
-    The product that I picked for today’s assignment is the “3 Musketeers” chocolate bar. The ingredients in the chocolate bar primarily includes milk chocolate, cocoa butter, skim milk, artificial and natural flavors, corn syrup, hydrogenated palm kernel oil, salt, egg whites, and cocoa powder process with alkali. All of the ingredients that are placed in the 3 Musketeers bar come from different parts of the world. For example, here’s a chart of all the ingredients that are placed and where they originated from below.
In addition, most of the ingredients that are presented are produced either in factories or produced naturally from trees or plants. The working condition for people that produce cocoa are dangerous. The dangerous factors that comes from producing cocoa are pesticides, lack of formal contracts, forced labor, incredibly low pay, and trafficking. Research says that there can be children spotted working in these dangerous conditions as well. The producers get the cocoa to the market by cutting ripe pods open with machetes after the harvest. Then they wait till the cocoa beans are fermented, dried, cleaned, and packed so they can sell the product to intermediaries. The prices of the cocoa are determined by the demand levels and supply. Top three International corporations that dominate the chocolate trade are Mars Wrigley, Ferrero, and Mondelez International. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the chocolate trade. Chocolate is marketed by different consumer types. Research states that some companies prefer to show customers that their chocolate has the most weight. They do this by utilizing digital scales, then presenting the price computing scaled on the package label. I bought my chocolate bar at a nearby cedar market. The profit a store owner makes on a chocolate bar is specifically 55 to 75%. Yes, there are hidden costs that isn’t included in the price I’ve paid mainly because of the hard labor the producers have gone through to get the cocoa products to consumers.
