Dr. Sam Owens wasn't missing in 1986-1987, he was busy.
After the most metal concert ever and Eddie broke his promise to Steve about not trying to be a hero, Dustin found Eddie. It looked like the damage from the demobats was going to be too much but that's when Steve, Nancy, and Robin came back from the Creel house. Steve's lifeguarding experience kicked in and he started the necessary first aid and CPR (he made sure to keep his training up to date with Upside Down of it all). Eddie's heartbeat and breathing restarted, albeit faintly. They're able to get Eddie back to the Rightside Up easily (unfortunately) due to the new and large rifts that tore Hawkins into four sections. They get Eddie to the hospital but before he can recover enough to be discharged, Dr. Owens shows up. He escaped his detention and returned to Hawkins.
He promised to do what he could to help Eddie but, the thing is, after the kids tell him about how they successfully attacked Vecna/Henry/One, his team scoured the Upside Down and...well, look at all that blood. Exactly what they needed to continue the MKUltra program.

Plus, thanks to Project Nina, Owens now has all of Dr. Brenner's research. And, let's face it, this outcast...this freak isn't going to be able to return to Hawkins. The whole town still thinks Eddie is a serial killer after all. It's so easy to let the party think Eddie succumbed to his injuries. Keep him hidden. Give him the blood needed to imbue those psychic powers. The same powers as Eleven but without that pesky other military faction always getting in the way and trying to hunt down his asset. Sure, Owens was kind to Eleven, even helped her hide in Lenora, but at the end of the day, she was always a means to an end.
When Eddie finally wakes up after the demobat attack, hospital recovery, and who knows what with the blood infusion and/or experiments, he now has a new tattoo on his left wrist..does that say “D20” or “020?”
Maybe during the town quarantine and the crawls, Eddie was actually working behind the scenes and unknowingly psychically influencing his friends. Steve’s “You heard that tone.” Dustin’s “We stay true to ourselves” and wanting to find the lost sheep to restart Hellfire. Robin saying, “As a good friend once said, ‘Bad news first, always.’”
When Eddie sees Steve tumble off the radio tower in the Upside Down, he almost blew his cover but quick thinking helped him use just enough of his powers to keep Steve from falling too far too quickly instead. Slowed Steve's descent just enough for Jonathan to jump down and reach him. Just a small push to make sure Steve could lift himself back up onto the platform, given he and Johnathan were only able to grasp one wrist each.
Where were all the democreatures during that last battle in the Abyss? The Numbers (children with psychic powers from the Hawkins Lab) all seem to have slightly different specialities…010 could read Dr. Brenner’s mind or visualize his drawings and peek on others in the area, 008 could manifest illusions, and Eleven can manifest inter-dimensional gates. Maybe Eddie can control the demos, or at least the demobats, and used them to keep the demodogs and demogorgons busy and distracted from the Party while they went after Vecna and the Mind Flayer. Maybe he overhears Dustin and Steve yell “For Eddie” during the attack,
After the victory, Eddie follows them out of the Abyss and through the Upside Down but sees the military try to capture Eleven. Does he help her? Does he use the chaos to slip out unnoticed? He would be just as wanted for his blood after all, since his came straight from Vecna. Even if he could avoid the military, he can’t return to Hawkins either since he’s still blamed for the murders but how can he not seek out Dustin or contact Steve.
Thinking about the extra scene in the script book with Crowley and Aziraphale leaving the elevator after the body swap... "Now that was playing with fire"
Didn't that say something about them fixing their clothing too? I don't have it with me to check.
I immediately focused on Aziraphale's reaction here... not what Gabriel/long for Jim was saying.
Gabriel doesn't like Aziraphale, he tried very hard to destroy him in Hellfire. Jim admitted he didn't know who Aziraphale was.
So, why was he drawn to the bookshop?
Headcannon that a subconscious part of him did remember wanting to find Beelzebub (he told them later he "forgot" right?), so maybe he was drawn to the residual demonic energy from Crowley at the bookshop. In S1, Sandalphon did say something smelled "evil" (Jeffrey Archer books? No. Probably Crowley) And that's what brought Gabriel/Jim there.
I don't know the "official" explanation, but I always assumed Crowley knew Hell would be contacting him (like they did previously through the radio and the news program) and chose the kids movie for his own amusement and/or to make it weird for them.

I'm not very active, nor am I well known here (and Tumblr keeps eating my posts for some reason), but I'd like to put a couple thoughts out there.
The fandom is for the fans. It's never been about an author. Yes, one did participate here and there, but this isn't about or for him. In fact, this space... our space... is none of his business. It's almost ironic that he was so adamant about keeping his boundaries from fanfic, and yet...now we see how he treated personal boundaries.
That said...
If you want to keep writing, keep writing. Fanfic was never his.
If you want to keep making art, keep making art. Your inspiration is your own.
If you want to take a break or leave altogether, do it. Your mental health is your own as well.
