Pink Elephant Bakery, THE panaderia, at 415 King Road.
Name Naomi Takata Shepherd Location San Jose, CA, USA What do you do? I tell stories. I use writing, filmmaking, cartooning, and my small business, 6 Degrees of Hapa, to draw attention to voices that aren’t often heard in mainstream media and make people think a little harder about ethnic and racial identity and gender roles in their daily lives. Even my business is about helping people tell their own stories; I started 6 Degrees of Hapa as a way for people of mixed Hawaiian, Asian, and/or Pacific Islander heritage to celebrate their unique roots through what they wear. I approach all of my projects with a sense of humor and bring in my own experiences as a woman and a mixed individual. Someday, I hope to have my clothing line in stores and have a film I directed up on the big screen, but until then, I’ll keep creating like I always have.
