reading through material on Gankutsuou sometimes feels like there is an unspoken pact that the entirety of media coverage agreed on to never. EVER. mention the queerness.

I’m not even talking about Peppo, an actual trans girl in an anime in the year of the lord 2004. or Franz and the fact that he is in 100% homosexual love with Albert and how that informs a huge part of the emotional backbone of the show.

I’m talking about the fact that Gankutsuou is actually a queer love story. 

and yet?

all the reviews I’ve seen so far do the exact same “yadda yadda Count of Monte Cristo Sci Fi AU in SPAAAACE, also what the FUCK is up with the patterns” sing and dance, with no mention of the fact that you basically have to strap in for a 24 episode slow burn friends-to-enemies-to-lovers fanfic of Alexandre Dumas’ literary classic.

then again, the material the anime itself provides does the exact same thing. the character relationship chart that comes with the DVD labels the line between Franz and Albert “Good Friends”.

which isn’t. wrong? per se? but Idk man it feels like that way one of the most important layers of meaning of this story just gets lost.

and part of me is glad, because not everything that has gay romance in it should be labelled BL. not that there’s anything wrong with BL. but not every anime that has a straight romance in it is labelled “romance”. things sometimes just happen to be queer, without revolving around the fact that they are. Gankutsuou was a revelation for me as a teenager. cause it showed me that epic stories about revenge and forgiveness and love can just happen to also be queer.

BUT. the fact that the queerness just gets sidestepped, no, I wanna say swept under the rug left and right… also doesn’t sit well with me?

it’s almost as if everyone’s either ashamed to acknowledge it, or. you know. impersonating that nice lady up there. and in 2004, that was no surprise! but now, almost 20 years later? I hoped Gankutsuou would be celebrated as the absolute fucking triumph of gay love story that it is.

#oh i believe that in 2009 when i first watched it everyone was talking abt how gay the story was #but yk #i guess that people now are less inclined to callit a love story #bc while in 2004 gay romances were almost nonexistent #nowadays calling the relationship btw albert and the count ‘a gay love story’ might uhhh #get you some side eyes #what with the grooming and the age gap and albert being 15 #i mean this is just food for thought #i dont think the queerness is being swept away #but there are also very valid reasons why ppl wouldnt see albert and the count’s relationship as a love story #and more of a one sided crush on albert’s part #at best #im not trying to start shit up i just… yea #want to explain (via @mgnajjh-dmp )

hey there! yeah, I’m not trying to fight either, but I have to give my two cents on these tags cause unfortunately this line of argument is exactly where queer representation discourse has gone wrong imho.

when did we start arguing that something is only gay representation when it’s healthy, wholesome, without any objectionable content.

why is a relationship not a homoerotic one, just because it’s abusive, or has a power imbalance? yes, it’s important that we get healthy and wholesome gay rep. but it’s also important we get to see all kinds of stories involving queer people.

heterosexual relationships in media are allowed to reflect all facets and flavors of human connections, they can be affectionate and sweet, they can be dark and violent, they can be manipulative, they can be vague, they can be complicated. and if heterosexual relationships are allowed to be depicted like that, the same should be true for queer relationships.

I gotta say I’m somewhat defensive of the fact that Albert is in gay love with the Count. because after everything that happened, after all the bad blood, all the hatred, the conspiring, after years of betrayal festering in and destroying a soul that in turn seeks to destroy the lives of so many people. after all this. it’s a chaste little kiss on the cheek, it’s the purity of Albert’s love and admiration and forgiveness for the Count that saves the day.

and denying that this is queer love is denying us one of the handful of stories we have where it is queer love that takes such a center stage, that is depicted as beautiful and cleansing and healing, and that is an unstoppable force which vanquishes the dark.
