We just left Centinela State Prison, a male-only prison with a population of 3,225 inmates located right above the Mexican/American boarder, with our brother @rick_shue! The purpose of our visit was to meet with the recreational coordinator of the facility to speak about the possibility of holding basketball clinics within the prison yards and eventually bringing in teams of people to compete against the inmates that have met the requirements for participation. We visited both a level 3 and level 4 yard and interacted with inmates in attempts to guage their interest. We watched them play amongst each other, got the opportunity to speak with them on a personal level and were met with nothing but positivity! They were all for it! The consensus was that programs that require them to work as a team allows them to interact with individuals that they might not regularly. It brings them together for a common cause and aids in a positive rehabilitation environment. For a moment in time they get to escape the walls of the prison while playing a sport that they love. Ultimately it gives them a sense of purpose and a sense of hope. One prisoner explained how positive daily activity trickles down to his nightly phone calls with his son and allows him to continue to be a father to him even from within the walls. At the end of the day, people make mistakes and most deserve a second chance. Who are we to deny anyone a bit of positivity? We know some might not agree, but that's not a concern of mine. The feeling we have in our hearts after interacting with the inmates and proposing our vision is all we need to ensure us that we're doing the right thing.
