growing up hearing about serial killers and mass murderers and not being told explicitly that these men pretty much all had severe issues with women is insane looking back. like you hear about how there are all these men who torture and murder women and write manifestos about hating women and have histories of harassing or sexually assaulting women or being involved with misogynistic hate groups but most speculation on the nature of the crimes and these specifics forms of violence focus more on the mental state or the character of the perpetrator. huh.

i’m not sure if i believe it tbh. like i mentioned before, the case was highly sensationalised and therefore inmates or guards could have made things up for the drama (and money) of it all. it also goes a bit against the reports of dahmer keeping his head down and not talking to anyone. i have previously noted some of dahmer’s “iconic one liners” though, and taunts like that often makes people want to respond in a way that will shut taunters up, so it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what he actually said.

I have a question regarding jeff (sorry if this isnt the anonymous ask you were hoping for) but was he considered a pedophile or was it ever brought up then because of his younger victims at the time they were killed? Mostly for 14 year old James and Konerak.

While many people who demonize Jeff and know only surface level things about him are quick to label Jeff as a pedophile, I think this is inaccurate.

Technically, somebody who is attracted to individuals of pubescent age, that is 11-15, including the 13 year old Jeff molested and the two 14 year olds he killed, is called a hebephile. This is someone who is attracted to those in early puberty and is different from pedophilia.

HOWEVER, I don’t think this is extremely significant as there are a lot of other factors here. Jeff had a paraphilia for male chests and biceps and he liked tone, fit men, and I personally believe that this preference would be more important than age. The average age of his victims was roughly 23, and there were 15 other victims that ranged in age from 19-33, in other words, were of age. Of course he also slept with supposedly 200+ other men that we don’t know the ages of, but based on what we do know I feel like an age preference isn’t as significant as the actual physique he was interested in. Perhaps he saw those 14 year olds as sexually mature and admired their physique but wasn’t necessarily like “I am attracted to this boy because he is underage”. This also ties into account that Jeff viewed their bodies as objects for pleasure and possession rather than actual people.

Labeling Jeff as a pedophile is not only technically inaccurate but also takes away from the bigger picture of what was going on with him IMO.

i checked and there is some info from inmates and guards and stuff, but not a lot. quoted below:

i thought it was. but as i mentioned in this post, it is more focused on the case and the sensationalism surrounding it rather than deep-going information about dahmer himself, so if you don’t find that interesting then it might not be for you. it’s a good read if one wants to understand the case in a broader context.

as for little known facts, i don’t recall if there were any. it’s been a few months since i read it, but i remember a few things stood out to me even if i don’t remember what they were exactly (sorry).

Some facts about Edmund Emil Kemper III:

Edmund is left handed.

After he got out on parole from Atascadero he bought a motorcycle. Edmund got into an accident, sued the other driver (a female) and bought his Ford Galaxie.

At the time of his first two murders he had his whole left hand, right up to shoulder, in a cast.

Ed tried to influence his mother with psychological knowledge he acquired in Atascadero (which was used on him during his own therapy) but it didn’t work.

One of the reasons Edmund killed his grandmother was because she didn’t left him with a gun after she explicitly told him not to touch it in her absence, thus making him angry with the fact that she didn’t trust him.

During his time in Atascadero he watched and listened to serial rapists and during his 5 years spent there he began to have rape fantasies.

The Psychology of Cults

Cult leaders, as well as some terrorist group leaders, use specific methods of psychological manipulation to keep their followers loyal and compliant. Here are a few examples of what these leaders do to keep their cult members faithful.

Depluralization This is the process where cult members are made to cut off their former ties and afflictions. Scientology is famous for isolating their members from the outside world and cutting ties with relatives and friends who openly denounce the “religion.” Scientologists have gone as far as stalking, harassing, and defaming outsiders who may threaten a member’s place within the cult. 

Self-deindividuation This method strips away a person’s personal identity. One way cult leaders do this is by making their members dress in a completely new way, many times exactly alike, to further take away their sense of individualization. Marshall Applewhite, the leader of Heaven’s Gate, made his followers dress in the same style of black tracksuits and Nikes. He also made them shave their heads. Soon the member’s only identity belongs inside of the cult, and they can no longer relate to the outside world.

Dehumanization In this process cult or terrorist group leaders attribute only negative characteristics to their perceived enemies and will refer to them as non-human entities such as animals, vermin, filth, etc., to help make it easier for members to engage in criminal activities against their enemies. Scientologists often have referred to their “enemies” as “suppressive persons.”

Demonization This is the social psychological conditioning process where group members become convinced that their enemies are in league with the devil and are “out to get them.” Thus, they need to engage in preemptive strikes in order to keep the safety of their cult or group intact.

Shame and Humiliation Terrorist groups and violent cults will use shame and humiliation (which increases the likelihood of violence and crime, especially in males) to coerce their followers to commit aggressive and violent acts against the cult’s enemies. The Japanese cult, Aum Shinrikyo, regularly used shame and humiliation in rituals on their followers.

I do, anon. I think if he’d had the internet he could have found some more like minded people and maybe made some friends, so he wasn’t so alone. I think he would have benefitted from the safety of revealing emotions from behind a computer screen. From being able to think about what you’re saying before hitting ‘enter’ and sharing your guts. I think he’d probably been able to cope better, especially when he was younger and awkward. I think that thats the greatest travesty of the Dahmer case, tbh. I truly think that, after all my digging, and my thinking, and my discussions, i truly think he could have been stopped if someone had intervened. 

But because no one said anything, because no one moved and everyone around him either didn’t care or “minded their own business” and showed zero empathy, here we are.

I thought about this a lot and I’ve come to the same conclusion but whenever I shared my thoughts with other people they said that there was no way any of his crimes could’ve been prevented which I found extremely irritating and often got upset because they were unwilling to understand my point.

I find that a lot of people don’t understand, or don’t want to admit in some cases, that someone isn’t wholly “evil” and that their actions could have been because of circumstance. If how Dahmer turned out, and thus his actions, were because of circumstance then it stands to reason that it could happen to anyone. People don’t like that argument. It means it could happen again. It means it could have happened to them or someone they know.

From what I understand, he may have had the internet. He definitely had a computer, and there was a lot of speculation post arrest about whether or not he had made some posts on a forum about consuming human remains. Of course, the internet in the 80’s/90’s was nowhere near as sophisticated as it is today, but you could chat and the like, and it’s unlikely he would have even been seriously considered as the author if the computer was never online.
