[ dauntless verse ] instead of sharing his divergence ability to the bureau leader, joel lied and signed up to donate himself to the city for research. for as long as he could remember, joel played the part of a kind man who was sheltered from a life of action - rendering him defenseless as a false facade. his tests shown that he would be placed into the dauntless faction to work on his behavioral trait of bravery. since he is literally a pure agent, the memory serum didn't work and joel kept his memories. from the sidelines, the man got to witness his youngest son - eric - work his way to leadership. during those initiation days, joel worked closely with tobias eaton in hiding divergence within fear landscapes. basicially helping anyone so that his son wouldn't shoot them, he gave tips on how to do everything like a dauntless would.
you picked the w r o n g side, agent.
she nodded her head, eyes focused as he began to talk. whatever it was, it was something he wanted to talk about. something that was eating at him. she had gotten good at reading people over the last month or so, and she stayed quiet, nodding her head for him to continue. as she listened, she began to think of al, her friend who had jumped. it had been one of the first people to die because of her. it still left a bitter taste in her mouth to this day, to think of him jumping because she was too selfish to forgive him. she took in a deep breath, running a hand through her hair as she tried to listen, tried to make some sense of what he was saying. she finally nodded her head, knowing that feeling all too well. survivors guilt. she breathed out, shaking her head before she finally ran both hands through her hair, trying to think and really process everything she’s been told. ”it sounds like a punishment to me,” she said lowly. “you might be divergent, but you still have to see all the loss around you. be reminded of the ones you couldn’t even save. it’s a reminder that even though we’re impermeable to most serums, we’re aren’t to pain. to what we’re still forced to see.”
and it did. the bureau was always out to punish everyone that took part in the war that ultimately divided an entire nation. in time they would all be absolved for their efforts, perhaps sooner than later if beatrice took the lead in a revolution. a rebellion of such dire volume would be destined for a divergent; they were the only subjects that could bring peace and dispose of the vile corruptions that plague the system. "it defeats the purpose their purpose. inducing fear only makes things worse. bravery is nice, but seeing someone you grew fond of - at that point - it wasn't even about bravery anymore." it was always about power. the government lost their grip and all of the states fell into a destructive purge. the major cities became prisons to rebuild what was lost. with the leadership of the country vanquished - what was left formed the bureau and applied science this time around. "kind of strange, isn't it? sometimes it's hard to believe that eric was my son." power did that to people. turned them to the dark.
❝ No, my parents didn’t teach me much of a n y t h i n g. ❞
Not entirely true but the lessons they taught weren’t fit for repeating. He didn’t look that bad but then again they never did on first glance. It was only when you got closer that you realized first impressions were often misleading. Precisely the reason she didn’t trust her eyes.
"o oh. i'm sorry." joel often took his parents for granted and naturally assumed that the rest of the world worked the same way. not to seem highly narrow minded, the man just saw so much good in the world that he foolishly forgot about the carelessness of others. not that he fully remembered the humans that gave him life, there were times in which flashbacks rudely interrupted joel's train of thought.
’I’ve perfected it. They won’t k n o w.’
"i truly hope so i can't save you after this."
it was a ʟɪᴇ when they ѕмιℓє∂ and said ❝ you won't feel a thing. ❞

If he dies, we die.
you know what? abnegation had to of been the highest ranked faction that originated from violence. technically speaking, amanda ritter -aka edith prior- an example that the bureau allowed people to restart their lives with the help of memory serum. they were so violent that they NEEDED more behavioral fixations when it came to being selfless and kind. even marcus eaton, the way he abused four. it's no wonder divergents popped up in abnegation or amity, so many of genetically corrupted humans were being flooded into these factions because they needed this area of expertise the most. they were obviously already brave and intelligent, honesty was never a concern and always overlooked. these people needed to be able to calmly place their hand on someone shoulder and be able to say a kind word. once jeanine started executing these threats, their only plan was to be exiled into factionless or face death. i mean, people knew about the bureau, people that tris made the mistake in trusting. those people had divergent friends/family that were able to escape the walls. the more i think about this and write from joel's persepective, the more i feel bad for tris. so if you ask me, abnegation is a monochrome hell. and amity is a drug induced prison. cheers to the new city bc damn this ones fucked.
hunger games verse; [ v; joels demise ] joel is a capitol resident and victor that once belonged to district twelve. during his visits back to his home place, joel would sneak supplies back and notify katniss of the items. he knew that she was usually out hunting with gale so that her people wouldn't starve or risk putting their names in for more grain, he just wanted to help the best way that he can. a few peacekeepers and disgruntled victors from one and two caught onto his treachery and notified the president. at first snow made him watch the armored soldiers take every last morsel of food and declare that they take on cannibalism in order to survive; he watched a few manic miners fight to the death just to sever any viable limb for a starving body. his next line of punishment was allowing beauticians of the captiol clean himself up to prepare joel to be auctioned for sexual favors to gain proceeds for future games. all of his winnings were revoked, house burnt to the ground - including his tattered bungalow in twelve. the whereabouts of his two sons were a mystery, no one seen them taken away by the capitol or witnessed an escape. joel was forced to obey to those who paid for him, and was sent back to his cell within the catacombs in which those who betrayed the authority were sent. from time to time a extravagently cooked meal is delivered to his unit, but he refuses to touch it because joel knows the smell of burnt flesh, and it's a plate to remember the deaths hes caused in twelve. joel patiently awaits everdeen to spark a rebellion.
fxur "do you really think you have it down? do you have all five traits perfected, tobias? they're going to test you."
"whys a pretty girl like you coming near a a guy like me. didn't your parents teach you a thing or two about - bad guys?"
he wasn't really a bad guy, not at all, he just had the look and feel of a guy whose been fighting a battle since the beginning of time. more bruises than freckles, yet he still managed to flash a smile.
a new face within the bureau, it could only mean one of two things. joel was hoping for the best, and it would be best if he stayed as far away from her before she became another victim.
his back against the wall, joel was sitting in the cafeteria section of the bureau's compound. far away from the city and resources, it was a complete mindfuck how everyone didn't starve. "don't tell me they conned you into joining."
memory serum says: IF YOU CAN’T REMEMBER
THEN IT’S BETTER TO FORGET.
And after the hours that had passed to get to this location, even if the eager welcome they had received the words still that seemed to be meant for her sparked a certain interest. She let out a faint scoff. ’ Must be your lucky day then. Because I am.’
"are you deaf? or just dumb? you NEED to get OUT OF HERE." joel was tall, towering over the little candor was an understatement. this would be the first time encountering someone who was fearless enough to walk into the bureau and expect to lounge around. words came out in a bit of a shout, hoping to get the point across that it is dire for them to turn around before it's too late.
honesty was never really her strong suit. there was a reason why she didn’t test higher into candor. but her curiosity was getting the better of her, especially here. she didn’t know whether or not she should even be trusting the bureau at this point——it looked no different than the erudite compound and she wasn’t sure of what everything meant. there were plenty of things she KNEW for a fact. she could count the number of people that died around her, whether it was on her own accord or by some other circumstance. so to say that she was succeeding at anything these days was far from the truth. she nodded her head though, at least acknowledging the compliment. ”that’s just it. i didn’t mean to do anything. i just——” didn’t know what to choose. where to go. she just closed her eyes and chose, not realizing the repercussions before it was already too late. ”so you’re saying they want to keep creating divergents. they want to keep this——-genetically pure bloodline going. right? that’s what you mean, isn’t it?”
joel just sat there nodding endlessly to her questions, unable to break the daze of a daydream that he was stuck in. so many memories he tried to forget just wouldn't go away, no memory serum could delete his past permanently. hues of blue and green irises left his knuckles that were close to his lips. "do you remember the big tree by the farms? amity they call it. i always forget the name of that faction." he didn't mean to go onto an entirely new subject, but he felt the need to let something horrible off his chest. perhaps he forgot about it because he hated his involvement several years ago. "i was a friend of a faction member.. who was a resident of the bureau before it was his time to donate himself to the city. needless to say, memory loss can either help someone out or damage them even more. so..i went to the tree that night, was jabbed by dauntless soldiers with their guns, to retrieve his body." the friends name was permanently erased from societies minds, but the image of the mans face forever remained imprinted into joels. his friend dangling from the highest branch was the reason why amity had peace serum made to forcefully obtain happiness and keep it. "when their studies backfire, they send in us, the divergents to get their bodies. now that i think of it, i'm not sure if it's for closure or a new line of punishment."

You’ve seen what people do without leadership. They devour one another.
