It's not quite as raw as their early work, but the songwriting stays true to their sound while adding some maturity. Sure there'll be plenty of people who disagree with that analysis but who cares. Tilt Shift

I have an obsession with view cameras and the ability to alter the relationship between the focal and lens planes (tilt/shift/swing). So since the impracticality and expense of an actual view camera became apparent to me, I bought an 85mm Nikkor PC-E lens. It doesn't get a huge amount of use for portraits, but here and there it can be amazing for selective focus and creating 'false miniatures'. I love to create dreamlike images, and this lens certainly helps achieve that.

More Texture

Abandonment

It probably ties in with my obsession with rough textures in pictures, but I love photographing abandoned buildings. Flaking paint on rotting wood, dead grass and rusty corrugated iron all make for gritty punchy photos.

Texture Love

I remember doing an assignment on texture in year 11 photography and not really understanding the point. A few years on I began to understand its importance, and now 17 years later I consider it to be an absolutely vital element. When creating black and white (and often colour) images, I think about how something feels to touch and try to create it visually. For things with flaky, rough or hard textures toning with a lot of texture is often effective. On the other hand when shooting very soft textured things like babies or flowers, pulling back the contrast is more likely to work. I don't always get to shoot stuff which is suited to extracting a lot of texture, but portraits in front of old crumbling brick walls, limestone or granite outcrops are quite good for it. Likewise when I saw the fishing boat in the pic above its texture appealed to me straight away. Getting texture right in photos can be very difficult and I'll be the first to admit I still get it a bit wrong sometimes. But great texture in photos is something I truly love.
