The Obsolescence of a Building, an Interview with Álvaro Siza
In this interview by Hugo Oliveira, Álvaro Siza presents his ideas on the link between obsolescence and quality in architecture, and the role that a design’s flexibility plays in this relationship. He argues that the convent is perhaps the best example of a typology which is both fit for purpose and very flexible, allowing myriad other uses when its lifespan as a convent has ended. He also laments the current tendency to design a building for a very short period of time – intended to last only as long as it is needed for its original function. He links this tendency back to the Futurists of the early 20th century, where the idea was that “each generation makes its own environment which is later destroyed”, an idea he dismisses since “it also allows you to build badly because it only needs to last twenty years”.

Two ramblers, a Paperboy named Grover, and a Six Legged Tarantula named Herman the Elder were barreling through the Castle Catacombs after pillaging it to the bones for it’s treasures. They were the only good hearted beings left in Mount Moldy, but had turned to stealing from the Swamp Stacks since the Fanglord Giants took over”

In Praise of the Sun and the Sea
If you happen to be at Croatia’s Zadar waterfront on a beautiful spring or summer evening, you might notice groups of people gathering around circular lit-up areas on the ground. Some of the people might point and laugh; some might try to catch the moving points of light before they vanish. Others might just stand and stare. Despite the lateness of the hour, there are probably a lot of children around, riding their bikes and scooters or simply running, following the colors and the movement of the lights. You might even spot a couple standing at the edge of the pool of light, kissing and hugging passionately. All those people are surrounded by soft, soothing music.

outside-in: the infinite garden by meir lobaton corona + ulli heckmann
all images © fabio ferrario
the ‘outside-in’ garden by architects meir lobaton corona and ulli heckmann, is conceived as a visual paradox for the 22nd international garden festival of chaumont sur loire, france - a device that enhances conditions in order to make the audience realize how by relying only on sight, they rely on imagination. the intervention provides a sense of how vision can become a shield that precludes the possibility of having a holistic experience of life - one that involves the entire body and that extends beyond it.
It’s almost as if this could be extended to be an indictment of the habit of seeing everything - meals, concerts, playtime - through the screen of our phones as we film or photograph it. I’m guilty too…

Sleeping Cabin by Tim Prentice
Mr. Prentice is known for making kinetic sculptures (that are absolutely incredible BTW) and architecture (Prentice & Chan - 1965). This is the only digital image I can find online of a cabin he created, with no additional information. I find this structure to be magical in a lot of different ways, but mostly because it reminds me of the many childhood summers I spent in Minnesota and it’s amazing pine forests. This automatically gets filed into my long list of things to build one day.

The juvet landscape hotel by Jensen & Skodvin.
Located in Norway, The Juvet Landscape Hotel is based on the idea that a structure should blend into its surrounding environment, offering amenities that are oriented outwards towards the surrounding nature. The minimal design features floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows installed in all the rooms and even the hotel’s spa, giving guests a splendid, uninterrupted view of the forested landscape outside. Inside, the rooms are sparsely but stylishly furnished as to keep the focus on what’s available to see and do outdoors.
