forest gothic
When you come upon the sign at the fork in the trail, you must leave an offering. A pretty leaf, a small pebble, your peanut butter sandwich. Place it on top of the sign post as an offering to the forest gods. If you neglect this, you will never find your way back.
If you feel Them watching you, don’t turn around. Quietly apologize and leave. You don’t want to know what happens if you don’t.

The child was alive and safe. Mankind was saved… for now. Resurrected and forgiven by a god he had only recently yet blatantly disobeyed, Michael had his life - and his wings - returned to him and could leave Earth’s surface if he wished. Returning to Heaven was the easy route, however, and Michael was never one who had been known for taking the easy way out of anything. Reinstated as an angel but now devoid of the collar that had bound him in service to god, Michael was free to do as he pleased. He has free will, something no angel had ever before possessed. Exercising that free will with regard to the child had been what had earned Michael such trust in the first place. God trusted him now to act alone, to use his better judgement, and to continue to help the humans he had so willingly given his life for.
…and there was so much left to do. Everywhere he looked, there were angry, sad, lost, disillusioned, and misguided people who could benefit from a little push in the right direction. Whether or not they would accept it was another thing entirely. Michael had no way to hiding his wings even if he wanted to, and that often earned him strange and unwanted attention from humans, not the least of which was for them to think him insane in some way and wearing a costume. How odd humans were sometimes.
Michael did not need to eat, although he could if he wanted to, but he quickly learned that places where people gathered to eat were often those that stoked whatever troubles they were having, even if it was only in the form of conversation. He couldn’t help every human with every problem, but some were bigger than others and worthy of his time. Wandering into a small diner - no, he hadn’t had his fill of those yet after everything that had happened - Michael looked around for a bit, noticing how nearly everyone in the place turned to look at him before whispering to themselves. He took a seat at the counter, for he couldn’t fit his wings into a booth easily, and proceeded to listen and observe.
“Halloween was last month, darlin’,” the gum-chewing, apathetic waitress who clearly disliked her job said as she nodded at his wings.
“They’re real,” Michael said flatly, his voice raspy from lack of use. He wasn’t one to speak unless it was necessary, but he could tell that with this one, it would be necessary.
“Yeah, and my granddaddy’s Elvis,” she said, he hand finding her hip as she slumped with annoyance.
Without otherwise moving or breaking his gaze from her, Michael slowly lifted and flared his wings behind him until they were fully spread. The waitress’ dull facade cracked and gave way to a startled and perhaps a bit fearful woman. “It’s alright,” Michael whispered to her, using his influence to calm her. That didn’t stop her eyes from welling up with tears as she had a bit of a moment. She turned and left, and Michael doubted she’d be back, but that was okay. He didn’t need to eat anyway. His wings folded back up into a comfortable position at his back.
There was more whispering now, and some of the patrons got up and left. Michael sighed softy. Humans were a rash and distrusting species. He fell silent and just felt the room, getting a sense for the energies that were here. Before long he was he sensed something ominous, yet familiar. Turning, he noticed a young woman sitting in a booth, writing in a book. Interestingly enough, she seemed not to have noticed him yet. Either that or she didn’t care. But… there was an aura about her that was dark. Staring for a time, Michael realized that it was not her own aura but rather something she had been touched by. Or someone. The familiarity he felt came from that source, and now he was definitely concerned. Yes, this warranted his attention.
Rising from the stool, he slowly made his was over to the woman, hoping not to startle her, but feeling like that was probably inevitable. Fortunately there was no one sitting in the next booth, for as he slipped into the seat across from her, his wings arched over the seat back and onto the adjacent seat behind him. “Hello,” he said, managing a smile. Michael had learned in dealing with humans that getting right to the point and spewing important information at them right out of the gate often scared them off… or annoyed them. A much softer approach usually worked better. “What are you writing?” he asked with interest, nodding at her book.
Antonia was at her wit's end with Kylie this time. Truly. She wasn't sure she could go on living this way any longer. Kylie had always been a little wild and unruly, but she always managed to complete her jobs within the time frame the man in black asked. Up until a few weeks ago that is. It started with her showing up late to the drop then she slowly wouldn't show up at all. This last job, she claimed the lost the package, but Antonia was almost certain Kylie kept it for herself. Anyone else would have been dead by now, but everyone knew that the man in black had a soft spot for the Owens sisters.
"You better get that sister of yours under control." He told her the night before. "If you don't, I will and I guarantee you won't like the methods I use."
That was how she found herself at Doc's Inn Diner at 9pm on a Thursday when she should have been at home, sitting near her fireplace, and writing poetry. Instead she sat at her usual booth, near the window facing that one dive bar, making sure her sister completed the drop on time.
A strange shift in energy occurred in the patrons as someone new walked in. However, just then, Kylie appeared in front of the bar and Antonia gave her full attention to the events unfolding outside the window. With an eye roll, she watched Kylie shamelessly flirt with the mark at the entrance to the bar before disappearing with him inside. Nothing to do now except wait for her to reappear.
Antonia rifled through her bag and pulled out her notebook. The diner certainly wasn't the same as her cozy fireside, but she still wanted to write down some poetry.
It wasn't long after she began writing that she heard the seat across from her compress from the weight of someone sitting down. He spoke to her in a friendly enough tone, but she had been hit on by enough guys to know they always start off friendly.
"Look, man. I'm sure you're a nice guy, but I'm not interes-" she glanced up from her book and the first thing she saw were wings. "Oh." She breathed. There were giant beautiful wings draped over the other side of the booth attached to a man. "Oh!", she said again, this time with surprise and confusion in her voice.
"Those can't be real. Are they?" A million thoughts were racing through her mind and none would stick. Antonia glanced around the diner before leaning closer to him and quietly saying, "I'm not about to die or anything, am I?"
