She wanted to tell him that he was wrong, but instead for a long while, she was just silent. âAnd then what do you want, Kylo?â She finally asked. âWhat do you gain by helping me?â
âI only want to see your power grow, for you to know the Force like I do and not to be afraid. You do not have to be afraid, you only have to trust in me and allow me to show you the ways of the Force.â
"Balance?" That was not something she expected to hear from him, and it took her off guard. "If...if I agree to this....to go with you and allow you to teach me. You have to promise me something. That you will not harm my friends."

Rey looked at the enterance to his ship, knowing that there was no turning back after this. Going back to Luke would not be an option, and she found that she didnât care. âI am.â She said, looking back at him. She was scared and she wasnât sure she was making the right decision, but it was the only one available to her.
That was all he needed. If she understood that the choices she made were her own, he was prepared to take her with him. The ramp was lowered already, and he walked up onto the ramp. After a moment, he turned around again, giving her a look as if to tell her it was okay. Then, he offered his hand to her once again.Â
Rey hesitated. She'd taken his hand a few times in the last moments they'd spent together, but this felt different. It was so final. Like she was putting the seal on some pact between them. But it was her choice. And she had made it. So carefully she reached out and laid her hand in his.

âHe doesnât care about me.â She said quickly. The very words hurt to say. Rey had so thought that her belonging would be with Luke. She really truly had believed that. But now, it didnât seem that that was the case. âI frighten him. And he never wanted to train me in the first place. I bet heâs glad to be rid of me.â
Ren felt sympathy for her. She was pushed away from something she got her hopes up for. He knew exactly how that felt. Many times, he was pushed aside by his father as he tried to earn his respect and approval. Eventually even his mother pushed him away. Ren waited a moment as he finally reached his ship. âYou donât need him,â he told her, turning to face her once more. âYouâre certain this is your choiceâŠâÂ

Ren knew she was still curious on why he had done that. After all, he didnât exactly give her a real answer to that. After a moment of silence and his eyes looking down at back up again a few times, he replied, âI couldnât let you die. I couldnât let myself be the reason you died. Because what I see in youâŠ. is exactly what I felt years ago.âÂ
Ren nodded. They seemed to have at least an understanding of each other and where they stood. That was the important part. Ren stepped forward as he led the way again. âWhat makes you think Skywalker wonât seek you out?â he asked.
"He doesn't care about me." She said quickly. The very words hurt to say. Rey had so thought that her belonging would be with Luke. She really truly had believed that. But now, it didn't seem that that was the case. "I frighten him. And he never wanted to train me in the first place. I bet he's glad to be rid of me."

That was exactly it. The last thing he wanted was for Rey to suffer through her life with regret and burdens like he did. He didnât know if she had ever actually killed someone⊠but if this went too far, she would end up killing those who meant the most to her. He didnât want that for her. Ren shook his head finally before softly ansering, âNoâŠ. I donât.â
As interesting and eye opening as this conversation was. They couldn't stay here. "We should go." She offered. "Luke won't come looking for me. But Snoke might send people looking for you. We can't stay in the same place for too long."

Ren agreed. There was much work to be done. It wasnât going to be an easy task. Especially since she seemed so conflicted. Though because of Renâs ability to relate to her, he figured it would be far easier to teach her. âWhy did you come to me?â he asked, needing one final answer. âReally.âÂ

Slowly Rey allowed her hand to drop. And secretly mourned the seeming end to their intimate moment. The answer to his question a few weeks ago would be been a resounding no. But here they were, and a different answer left her lips. âYes. I trust you.â
He believed her. He needed to believe her. Just as badly as she must have known she needed to trust him. He wondered if there was still a slight bit of skepticism within her about him, but he didnât ask. âI trust you,â he promised her after a moment. Â
It seemed like with that, their little pact was sealed. They were a team now. For better or for worse, he was her teacher. And she had finally given into him. "Then I think we have some work to do."

It was in that moment she realized that they were both craving different and yet the same things. She wanted direction. A place to call home and an understanding of herself. He wanted that sense of belonging too. But he understood himself. He just needed someone else to see the truth too. And to accept it and love him for it. He craved it. She could sense it. But did he so want her affection? Was that why he clung to her so? Rey didnât know. âNo, thank youâŠwe may be all the other truly has right nowâŠâ
Ren felt like for the first time ever, he had someone who understood. Even his mother didnât fully understand him. But Rey⊠the two were similar. They both wanted similar things. To belong somewhere. The have a purpose. A real, true purpose. Not one that is forced upon them. âIn order for this to work,â he started, pushing aside his emotions again, âthere has to be trustâŠ.. Do you trust me?âÂ

Rey considered it for a moment. She had been terrified of him the first time theyâd met. Silently she reached up. Her fingers ghosting over the scar sheâd left on his face. Barely touching the mark sheâd permanently left on him. âNo.â
It was a direct mirror to the conversation they had just had earlier. Ren allowed her fingers to gently touch his scar as some rogue tears formed in his eyes. Maybe he needed her help. Maybe she was right. Together they could find their place. They could find their purpose and their identity within everything. There was some relief in knowing someone did not fear him. After years of having people look at him as a fearsome leader, he felt a tenderness from Rey. One he had been longing for for so long. For a brief moment, his gaze fell before looking back to her eyes again. âThank you,â he nearly whispered.Â

Ren could see the care behind her eyes. Why did she care? He was a horrible person. He had done terrible things. âAre you still afraid of me?â he asked, his own voice trembling with his attempts to appear calm.Â

She was right. He was lost and alone. Maybe that was why he sought her out. He remembered when he went through her mind⊠the more he learned of her, the more he liked her. âAnd what if I am really just a monster?â he asked, lifting his brows.Â
"You're not." She insisted. That much she knew was true. "You're not, or I would be dead right now. You wouldn't be offering to help me." Rey wanted to put him at ease. Because he had done so for her. At least a little.

Rey was simply silent. She didnât know what to say that. She didnât know how to make this better for him. âYou deserve so much more than you give yourself credit for.â She finally said. âYou pretend to be somethingbyoure not. Something that Snoke has made you into. But youâre not that. Youâre so much more.â
Maybe he should believe her. She was, after all, the only one who seemed to understand him the most. But he wasnât so sure he could fully believe her. Still, he tried not to show any regret for what he had done. âThen what am I?â he asked, wondering what she would say.Â
