it wasn’t a particularly busy day at the diner, in fact the dimly lit room was fairly empty and so the fact that imogen hadn’t noticed the person walking up to the counter might have seemed surprising to anyone who wasn’t aware of how oblivious she could be at times. lost in her own thoughts, she carelessly poured coffee into a lonely mug sitting before her - so carelessly that she continued to pour long after the cup was full, causing sticky black liquid to spill over it’s edges. a drop of the seething caffeinated drink burning her skin was what eventually alerted imogen to the situation, the girl jumping backwards whilst simultaneously sending the coffee pot smashing to the floor. “oh my” hands rising to her face, imogen’s eyes fluttered between the mess she’d made and the person now standing before her. “i’m so sorry, i’ll be right with you i promise”

backstory
imogen grew up in long island with her parents and younger brother trevor. they were a wealthy family, imogen’s father being a successful lawyer meaning her mother nancy could be a stay-at-home hands-on mom. the scott siblings’ upbringing was fairly wholesome, without any major scandals, the family had always been a solid unit full of love for one another.
imogen had always been a somewhat innocent girl, always sticking to her curfews and doing her homework on time. the only problem she had in school was her lack of intelligence, she was always having to work twice as hard as everyone else to keep up
during senior year, imogen’s parents got her a tutor which unintentionally led to her meeting her husband. her tutor’s son took an instant liking to her and pestered imogen to go on a date with him and, when she finally agreed to it, it only took a few weeks for her to fall head over heels for him.
lucas was older than her by 2 years and a college dropout, dropping out after his first semester to focus on his dreams of making it as a musician. imogen’s parents were instantly turned off by lucas’ bad-boy image but they tried their best to give him a chance considering how happy he made their daughter
the real surprise came when imogen announced she was abandoning her original plan of going to college and instead intended to move in with lucas the minute high school was over - this, of course, only solidifying her family’s distaste for the new man in her life.
by the time imogen was 19 they were living together in a dingy apartment with only lucas’ gas station job and the little money he earned from gigs to support them - although imogen’s father offered to help them financially, lucas’ pride had him rejecting this offer.
the couple were married on imogen’s 20th birthday (imogen actually managing to convince lucas to let her father pay for the wedding)
their marriage was plain sailing for a few years, imogen got a bit lonely being hauled up in their apartment all day waiting for lucas or one of his bandmates who also lived with them to return home from work but she was in love and she thought that was all she needed to be happy
however when lucas’ bands’ regular spot at the bar across the street was cancelled and after struggling to find another venue in new york, lucas sprung the decision to move to chicago on imogen. without barely a discussion, he sold their apartment and told her they were moving in two weeks - a decision that broke imogen’s heart being that she had barely gone a few days without seeing a member of her family her whole life. but she agreed becuse she loved him and wanted to be supportive of his dreams.
things took a very dark turn in chicago, the couple argued on a daily basis and lucas quickly turned to drink to ease the pain of his struggling career. his new addiction brought out an aggressive side to him imogen had never seen before and sadly she began witnessing a lot more of his violence as time went on. he kicked his band mates out & grew increasingly more controlling when it came to imogen - him always having been the reason imogen didnt work as he preferred her to stay at home & him being the reason she didnt have any friends. sadly, the physical and mental abuse continued for the 3 years the couple spent in chicago.
5 months ago, after a particularly bad fight, a bruised up imogen finally plucked up the courage to call her parents and tell them everything - her mother catching the first flight to chicago to bring her daughter home.
imogen’s father began drawing up divorce contracts immediately but imogen couldn’t face it - and still hasn’t gotten around to divorcing him now
current situation & personality
imogen has been back in new york for just under 5 months and works as a waitress in a cafe just around the corner from an apartment her father bought for her. she’s still technically married but she doesn't bring up her husband ever
she’s a terrible waitress due to how clumsy she is but they don’t say much about it since the regular customers love her so much
she’s a very friendly person, it only takes a few minutes with someone for her to declare them her new best friend. she’s THAT type
she’s very ditsy but also very curious, she loves learning new things & is constantly asking questions
she’s not very good at being on her own having been so dependant on others for a long time so she leans on people v easily.
she’s a people pleaser and gets very anxious when she thinks she’s upset someone or thinks someone doesn’t like her

backstory
she grew up in a very wealthy neighbourhood in las vegas. her parents are typical snobbish rich folk but their attitude didn’t rub off on imogen. her dad is a well known plastic surgeon and her mother a court judge.
imogen was always a good girl in high school, she studied hard & didn’t ever party - mostly bc she was following her parents rules
her parents were very pushy with her from an early age, starting her piano lessons, languages and school tutoring at only age 4 (which honestly she needed bc shes not the brightest spark)

after sleeping rough in her car for around a week, imogen decided she needed help and chose to call her parents. clearly still angry with her, the couple told their daughter they wanted nothing to do with her and payed her a lump sum of money to never contact them again. she felt bad taking it but she was desperate and so she set off in her car again and that’s how she ended up in san francisco
