BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS (2016)
fuckin calm down greg its kpop. its just kpop
200409 jiu and cherry
dreamcatcher keep pushing so many boundaries in the kpop industry……. they’re just seriously so amazing
but like, really
starting from their concept, it’s not every day that you see a girl group with such a strong and powerful concept. most, if not all, of their mvs are basically short horror stories and it would’ve been so easy to turn it into some weird sexy horror thing but it never is. out of 6 mvs I can only really remember one shot of jiu that was rather provocative, but other than that the mvs never follow that path. and this is HUGE given the sexualisation women face on a daily basis, not even just in the kpop industry (I am in no way saying that girl groups that do this are worse btw, I’m aware that most times they don’t get to choose what they do and it’s rather chosen for them - there is also nothing wrong with women who choose to do a concept like that deliberately-, I’m just saying that this is a huge step towards showing that girl groups can be and do a lot more than that).
which takes me to my next point, their choreographies. something that you won’t feel when watching dreamcatcher perform is uncomfortable, whether it’s because they have a female choreographer that fully understands their abilities, or simply because their company wants to show that female groups can also have actual strong choreographies, it’s always an incredible feeling to see dreamcatcher on stage. their choreographies are actually made to display their amazing dancing abilities, and aren’t really directed at one type of audience. not to mention the fact that they have gone as far as including props in one of their choreographies which only enhanced the talent and hardwork this group has and puts into everything they do.
and of course, besides their strong concept and choreographies, dreamcatcher also have a very strong and distinguishable sound. I understand actually not really I can’t imagine limiting yourself to only a few genres of music but anyway that it might not be to everyone’s taste, but it’s undeniable that their strong sound is opening a new path. from showing that girl groups can be intimidating for the sake of it, to showing that they don’t have to restrict themselves to a trend, dreamcatcher really defy the limitations put on them. and let’s not forget that despite their main sound being based on rock, they’re not limited to it and often experiment with other genres on their b-sides, which has given us amazing tracks such as wonderland, sleep-walking, and there was no one left, daydream, etc, where the group has showcased numerous times their ability to perform genres that people wouldn’t normally associate with them.
and speaking of their tracks, as far as I’m aware, dreamcatcher are probably the first kpop group with a discography that is 100% gender neutral (feel free to correct me if im wrong tho). as I said above, they’ve experimented with various other genres in their b-sides so it’s not because they’re limited to showing only a powerful image, but rather it’s been a conscious decision from the company since their debut - and let’s not forget that dami has also been involved in the process of writing lyrics, and even wrote ‘scar’ fully on her own, so this is a conscious choice even for the girls themselves. for an industry that often looks to appeal to the opposite sex, this is a huge step towards normalising songs that can be relatable for everyone regardless of who they are and who sings them.
keeping that in mind, something that is also worthy of admiration is the fact that dreamcatcher have covered numerous songs originally sang by male artists and directed at female lovers (lucky strike, really really, treasure, there’s nothing holding me back, etc), without changing any of the pronouns. you could argue that they are simply keeping it as is, but it’s not rare for artists to change the pronouns when they cover a song like that. and besides, given the amount of times that this has happened, and the fact that their covers always go through a production process to give them their own color and sound, it shows that this has also always been a conscious choice from the beginning. not to mention the time that dami and yoohyeon covered mmm’s peppermint chocolate and willingly changed the original lyrics from “a girl like me, a guy like you” to “a girl like me, a girl like you”. having a girl group cover so many songs directed at female lovers and normalising same sex attraction to this extent is really something that not only deserves our admiration but also our support.
and still on the topic of covers, dreamcatcher really aren’t afraid to defy boundaries, and went as far as covering bb’s bang bang bang. the reason why this is worthy of notoriety is because they absolutely didn’t hold back for this performance, and went as far as changing the lyrics themselves - dami said at a fansign that it had been her idea. where the original lyrics read “the dignity of men, the pretense of women” it was heard “the dignity of women, the pretense of men”, and where it was read “guys go on top, girls get low“ it was heard “girls go on top, guys get low”.
having all of that in mind, you could give a shot to their latest comeback ‘PIRI’, maybe get to know the girls a little. besides being amazing performers and entertainers, these girls have such a real, genuine, and kind attitude that it’s honestly heart warming. I understand that dreamcatcher’s style may not be everyone’s preference, but I really do think that it’s important to acknowledge how many pre-established limitations they’re breaking for girl groups, and support them on it.
I wrote this post back in 2019 when Piri came out (february to be exact)………. it’s been now over 3 years and it’s incredible to look back on stuff like this and see that Dreamcatcher haven’t deviated at all from what they set themselves to do since the beginning.
their choreographies have only gotten more powerful at this point (Maison being the actual epitome of this), we’ve had every single member write songs (several for some of the members) at this point and all of them still followed the principle of not being gender specific. it’s clear that it’s a conscious choice at this point.
finally a two time winner, Dreamcatcher have continuously stayed true to their rock sound and strong image, and showed that groups, specially girl groups, can be and do more than the standard kpop sound and concepts to be successful. it’s no wonder that so many female rookie idols are starting to look up to them.
this has been such a tough road for them but I’m so glad that the members never gave up, I’m so glad that Handong chose to be with them, I’m so glad that they all chose to support and be with each other through it all. they’ve had so many break or make it points in their career before, and they have somehow always made it. I know their company doesn’t always make the best decisions, but Dreamcatcher have continuously proved to be such an important and amazing group. I can’t wait to see what doors will open for them with this newly success, and I can’t wait to see the doors they will open for future generations through their success as well. this is truly only the beginning for them
