“I’m always be with you.”
Now perhaps I am really behind here, but I have only just realised that the lake Jack died in was RIGHT OUTSIDE his house!
This means that all the time Emma was in danger, his mother was just inside, only a few feet away - but he never thought to leave his sister to go and get her, he never called out for help. There was no way he was leaving that little girl, and perhaps it reveals a large part of Jack’s character that he never thought to ask for help - he felt that it was his responsibility to save her.
It also means that EVERY SINGLE TIME Emma or his mother would leave the house they would be faced with the place Jack died - a constant reminder of what they had lost.
For some reason, the lake being right outside, rather than off in the woods somewhere as I had previously presumed just makes me so much sadder :(
