Ferguson: Calculated Puppeteering
You know it is quite irritating to see the lone black highway patrolman Captain Ron Johnson. I know he means well, and I know he knows where the people of Ferguson anger comes from, after all he is a black man with two children of his own.
Literally as soon as he was put in charge of the now highly emotional town due to last weeks murder of Michael Brown by officer Darren Wilson, tensions seemed to calm. Personally I feel like it was a calculated move by the Governor of Missouri for what some may think is a move in the right direction. It seems to be that he is nothing more than a puppet to calm what most of the police force deemed the predominately black citizens of Ferguson as animals. The following day he was blindsided as the towns Chief of Police released a “strong arm” robbery that may or may not have something to do with nothing, only to inflame protester’s emotions even more.
I really do respect Captain Ron Johnson but he’s being used as a matter of symbolism and not for the role the governor assigned him. Giving hugs and talking to protesters is great, but what happens when things begin to die down? Yes this community needs to build a better relationship with its police department but when the one current ally you have is going to be eventually yanked to return to highway patrol duty then what?
Also why has there not even been a simple arrest of this officer since the changing of the guard? Unfortunately I feel like some town members are falling for this temporary fix for an age old wound but luckily many are not. As I type this another night of tear gas and rubber bullets are being fired and protesters 1st amendment rights are being disenfranchised.
