James chuckled.
“I think that could be arranged.”
He glanced at the rear view mirror just as Annabelle began to cheer and clap. He had never seen her that excited about James agreeing to act silly. She must really be fond of Susannah.
And apparently quite fond of the idea of James spending more time with Susannah.
It wasn’t a long drive from the park to James and Annabelle’s house. As soon as he parked in the driveway, James turned the car off, unbuckled his seat belt, got out, and opened the passenger doors for Annabelle and Susannah.
“Thanks, Daddy!” Annabelle said as she hopped out of the backseat; already quite proficient in quickly releasing herself from her seat belt.
Susannah smiled as James offered her his hand. Her hand was soft and warm in his as he helped her out of the car.
“Thanks”, she murmured somewhat shyly.
James beamed at her.
“You’re welcome.”
Closing both doors, James made sure the car was all locked up before leading Annabelle and Susannah into the house. Annabelle immediately took her shoes off, placing them in their designated spot in their cubby hole before hanging her backpack on one of the hooks by the door.
“You don’t have to take your shoes off if you don’t want to”, James assured Susannah. “I sometimes keep mine on. Annabelle needs to take hers off because she has a dreadful habit of tracking all sorts of things into the house.”
“It was one time!” Annabelle pretended to complain. The two of them had had that particular fake fight hundreds of times. Annabelle truly did have the worst luck when it came to stepping in the gross things one could often find on the sidewalk.
James glanced over at Annabelle.
“Please go wash your hands. I’ll put on some music while you do, Belle.”
“Okay, Daddy!” Annabelle said before zooming towards the bathroom.
James chuckled.
“She usually protests that. You must be a very good influence on her.”
Susannah smiled. “The girls know better than to argue back about washing their hands with me, even after just a few weeks.”
“Terrible punishments if they misbehave? Lose a hand?”
“And when they run out of hands we move on to toes,” Susannah replied to James’s teasing with a laugh. “No, more that they get two stamps on their charts if they can show me clean hands.”
“What is the chart for?” James asked, he took a seat and gestured for Susannah to sit down too. She wondered if she should sit next to him or take the chair. There wasn’t a lot of furniture, but if it was normally just James and Annabelle, they probably didn’t need a lot.
“A full chart gets to pop a balloon. The balloons have a treat inside, might be some kind of glitter pen or might be a little chocolate bar. But they have to pop them to get it. It’s adorable watching them try to sit on the balloon, excited and yet scared that it’s going to pop.”
Susannah had taken the idea from her own time in the Girl Guides. It had been fun then and it turned out it was fun now. Or at least the girl’s thought so, and that was the main thing.
Susannah assumed that James wouldn’t be quite as scared as the girls were if he had to sit on a balloon, but the mental image of him being adorable made her smile.
