Secret Santa art trade! My victim was @caba-111, who does incredible landscapes so I pulled inspiration from the coastal valley full of clouds I saw recently on my morning commute. These lizards r on the prowl for ancient relics

Ok so as I’ve mentioned in the past I’ve never actually read Animorphs, so I’m literally a fake fan, but I found this post and was intrigued enough to give this design a shot. I also used the fan wiki for reference. Probably the biggest change I made was making the hooves mandibular instead of just… absorbing grass… because that strikes me as a really inefficient way to meet your energy requirements as a large herbivorous animal. It was also fun trying to turn fingernails into teeth– I tried to imply an evolutionary history where the six limbs were derived from mouthparts, with similarities between the hands and feet, and the arms remaining in sort of a jaw position.

Can scuds go into freshwater? Since they live in saltwater I was wondering if the lack of salt in freshwater would hurt their gills or other parts of their body.

Freshwater skinnydips in the range of 10 minutes or so will not hurt a scud, but repeated or prolonged submersion will result in painful bloating of the gills and eventually death. Scuds, like most saltwater animals, simply cannot pee out freshwater as fast as it enters them.

Freshwater explorers usually wear salinity filters over their gills, which trap a layer of salt water against the gills while allowing regular respiration. Bigger and more expensive equipment will do this better and longer. A mouthpiece is sometimes worn for extra safety on long dives as freshwater can also enter the throat and cause similar bloating problems.

Physically, Bip is a supercomputer located on the upper floor in the habitat unit of the Runaway spacecraft. They control most of the systems on the ship, and in a way it is their main body. However, for some tasks, they have to use their remote controlled unit. It is a very nice “android” design based on a bug ferret’s body, and was a fairly expensive model (likely stolen, by Bip, who is an ex-pirate ship). But, they hate to use it– they think walking is physically annoying, navigation through body-based senses is obnoxious, and they dislike when squishy sapients fixate on the RC unit like it’s more than just a limb or puppet they’re controlling.

The RC unit mostly gets used for spacewalking and doing repairs on the outside of the Runaway, so it has radiators, magnetic feet, and a weak RCS unit. However, it’s also street-worthy and can walk on-planet and do tasks a non-robotic bug ferret could.

Hotkoin did a wonderful job creating their RC unit. My favorite detail is that the original (probably stolen) model was more colorful, but Bip attempted to repaint the parts that clashed with their aesthetic (and made it easier to ID). The paint layer wasn’t thick enough and some of the old colors show through.
