How does Verengt know which of their matriarchs entourage sired them? Do centaurs generally bother to distinguish sire parents? Surely it can’t always be possible
Everyone in the entourage when a centaur is born is their sireparent. Verengt's other sireparents are dead or still in Etwajnh's clan.
In the latest RttS reader questions, Verengt says that she wasn't the obvious choice for matriarch because she was "not the strongest, not the fattest". Is being overweight commonly considered a boon to centaur matriarchs? I'm curious if this is also why the entourage comments on Talita's weight?
Yes. In a nomadic subsistence lifestyle fat tends to be hard earned or a sign of wealth. Being chubby is insurance against starving and means you have fat to put into your silk to feed your offspring. If you're too thin, your silk will be too lean and your larvae will starve. There is a threshold at which excess fat stops being conventionally attractive though, where it impacts atheleticism, which is equally important as a desirable matriarchal quality. A strong matriarch can fend off competition and will have strong offspring, or so they say.
Do avians fear heights?
Yes, in that being able to swim makes one more confident around water, but doesn't necessarily make one stop fearing drowning. Flight only works under specific conditions.
could you do a lineup/family tree of Verenget’s clan? I’m not sure if I’m just used to Talita but I’m having a hard time remembering their names and telling them apart
I hate making character sheets and it's not important to the book so probably not. I might provide color examples of them for Artfight but they are all bog standard Nightchasers except for Jachipt who is a bog standard Shta
