The offspring of a Vampire and a human, Dhampir are - uniquely of all being hybrids - given their own distinct name, due the sheer difference they have between each of their parent species. Nonetheless human-like in appearance, Dhampir physically resemble both parents, but usually inherit many vampiric strengths (heightened senses, greater physical resilience, longer lifespan) and few of the weaknesses (counting compulsion, allergy to daylight, garlic and roses, wooden stakes). Most usually Dhampir can use magic, if their human parent is a wix, and similarly can have non-human inheritances from their human parent such as Veela fire (only if their human parent is half-veela), the Berserker battle-ready state (if their human parent exhibits a majority of Berserker traits), and Elemental Fae ties (if there is Elemental Fae ancestry in their human parent).
Most commonly Dhampir are known for their unique position as the go-to individuals for Vampire slaying, on the occasion a Vampire goes rogue. Depending on the Vampire variant this can be due to a number of reasons, but sheer age is common throughout Eurasia, while in the Americas it is more common for the Vampires to become intoxicated by large quantities of human blood. Dhampir skill at identifying Vampires is varied, both depending on the variant of their own Vampire parent, as well as the traits they inherited. Universally those few Dhampir which inherited the Vampire venom are more than capable of identifying even the most well glamoured Vampire, while other Dhampir most commonly have to be trained to it.
Dhampir can have some weaknesses. Throughout Eurasia sunlight is one of the greatest complaints, while in the Americas the risk of blood-madness can be just as common in Dhampir as in Vampires. Accordingly American Dhampir are often brutally trained to resist blood, from the tiniest quantities to roomfuls, as well as their training to kill rogue Vampires. However despite the surprising number of Dhampir worldwide (commonly attributed to their somewhat longer lifespans) not all Dhampir survive long after birth, due to a recurring congenital disorder (sometimes believed to instead be a neonatal disease) which results in their possessing no bones. Unfortunately not even liberal dosing with Skele-Gro has ever managed to help these infants, and they usually die within hours of birth, or the disease affecting them.
Due to the differences in Vampire variants around the world Dhampir training is likewise varied. While American Dhampir have to contend with the faster reflexes of their local Vampires, African Dhampir have to contend with their variants hardiness, and resistance to being killed, while Eurasian variants often require teamwork between multiple Dhampir to break through the Vampires focussed attacks. American Dhampir are also known to select breeding partners depending on traits, rather than any kind of emotional attachment, while Old World Dhampir meet every two years to show the abilities of those newly trained, in order to share the most effective techniques, and encourage Dhampir in teamwork and cooperation.
It is also not uncommon for Dhampir to be trained to control their emotions due to a dangerous inheritance some may receive from their Vampire parent known as the Heart-Halt. Caused when the individual receives a certain measure of emotional trauma, a Heart-Halt causes a coma-like state in full-blooded Vampires, to allow them a peaceful, and nil-blood requirement time in which to recover, while it can be fatal to Dhampir. While its effects in Dhampir can be treated with certain potions they do not return an affected Dhampir to a fighting state until they have recovered emotionally, and as causes in Dhampir can vary from mild emotional upset, to only in response to brutal emotional abuse (while in Vampires it is only in response to immense emotional shocks or abuse) emotional control is often considered a necessity in those Dhampirs with a Heart-Halt affected Vampire parent.
It is not uncommon for Vampire Courts (sometimes also called Covens, Nests, and Hives) to willingly take in and train the Dhampir offspring of some of their members, not only to ensure rogues can be dealt with quickly, but to engender trust between themselves, and local authorities. Generally however it is agreed that Vampires have little care for those they train to be their executioners and while they may express outrage at one of their Dhampir being harmed (badly injured unnecessarily, attacked without cause, infected with Lycanthropy and turned into a Pricolici) this is more outrage at a possession being harmed, than a person.
