“Thanks Becky Holbert for planning the 4-H Health Daze week. So far I have had an awesome time learning about forensic science and health careers. The coolest was the cadaver lab at ISU where I even felt a heart and lung! We also had fun getting makeup done to look like injuries at Union Hospital Simulation Center. I’m looking forward to another great day tomorrow!”

Teens from Vermillion County, both 4-H and non-4-H members, ages 15-18 yrs old, learned basics between the differences of forensics and anthropology through Dr. Phillips’ powerpoint and then learned to apply some of that knowledge to specific case pictures he has been called upon to help identify and date remains.
Day 1 Forensic Science/Anthropology presented by Indiana State University:
They learned to:
*’Sex’ skeletal remains (skull, femur, pelvic pieces, etc.)==some by using charts, others by using calipers
*Determine which remains were older by comparing same bones
*Determine descent of deceased by measuring the nasal aperture of the skull and why there is a difference in size of aperture determined by climate: African, European, vs. Asian descent
*Determine between animal and human remains
*Learned about cultural burial sites
*Dentistry and cultures, time periods, etc.
