Hole - Royal Blood

Before you can settle, you’re immediately kicked in the face, repeatedly, with this heavily revved intro, which you’ll probably rate as the tracks best feature. Definitely a faultless first impression, especially if you’ve never had the pleasure to catch Royal Blood until now. Better late than never, eh.

The lyrics are repetitive, however, there’s a couple of poetic tinges that make ‘Hole’ so memorable “I’m just another one fading away, when darkness falls, it’s here to stay”. Vocally, I wish Mike would roar out “I’m just stuck in a hole”, he should be writhing about with frustration… Instead, he holds the emotions back and lets the guitar do the talking. Well, we can’t have it all!

Budapest - George Ezra

The second track on George Ezra’s debut album Wanted On Voyage, we’re introduced to ‘Budapest’ by a steady, chirpy riff which you can’t help but warm to instantly. Setting the tone and anchoring the single as a pretty positive folky love song, we’re suddenly hit with Ezra’s rich, addictive, silky voice. He flaunts a masculine, butch tone; however, it’s somewhat soothing as the tame, soft flecks keep the song mellow. As for the lyrics, they’re not exceptionally impressive, but they’re nowhere near dire. Basically we hear a story about a man willing to leave everything for someone he loves, so not too cliché. Not an exciting theme but I believe the beauty of his voice and musical talent allows us to make an exception, and we certainly will.

REVIEW:

The Chapel Sessions: Volume 1 (By Wind Or Gale) - Dan Simpson Quartet

  This debut EP is a set of new tracks recorded in a live setting in April 2014 at Christ Church, Uxbridge. These songs written and arranged by Dan Simpson and performed with his quartet are a display of where the songs are at currently.

By Wind or Gale starts off as a blues/jazz with a piano and bass pattern that’s incredibly catchy, but with extremely cynical lyrics that most people can empathise with. Another stand out on the EP is Ewe Would Not Believe (Sheep Song). Its simple folk melody, which is outstandingly performed, makes it perfect song for the album, written after witnessing a sheep miscarry on a moor. The other songs are traditional and performed well, with an atmospheric intro that transports you to another place. The vocal melody is outstanding with his strong voice that especially suits the more traditional folk songs, which gels well with the competent instrumental accompaniments.

Overall, you can’t go wrong. Lyrically the quartet have produced their most interesting songs yet; they tackle themes such as being disenchanted with society and the world around them and with loads of catchy vocal hooks to sing along to. It’s a very mature EP for such a young group.
