So I need a better wheelchair.
Hey, guys. SO. Once the mass in the femur of my left leg gets checked out, I’m slated to get a date/time for surgery on my right knee. Fairly major surgery, actually. I’ll be getting something called a Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy or a Fulkerson Osteotomy. I’ll be on crutches for about 6 weeks, and then steadily recovering for months afterward before we do the other leg.
Now, if you know me, you know that I and long distances/long periods of standing don’t get along very well. I get fainty and ill and generally it’s a bad experience. I have a basic wheelchair I’ve had for a few years now for getting around in during such times outside the house, which is why if you’ve ever met me at a convention I’ve been in it and then been out of it lying on the ground and lifting my legs on the seat because my cheapy chair is a model that doesn’t have liftable legs to prevent the pooling of blood and general discomfort.
Being stuck on crutches is gonna suck but is doable for short distances for me pain and stamina wise. It’s the extended time in the immobilizer that’ll be a problem.. specifically because my wheelchair doesn’t have a liftable leg. If it did, I could simply lock it out in place, set the straight leg immobilizer out on it, and enjoy more comfort and way less limb swelling than I otherwise might, as well as more freedom outside of the house when applicable and a long time of use even beyond the recovery time for my other issues. As it doesn’t, it means my current chair is going to be worthless to me during this period, which will be limiting.
My insurance is only going to be paying for crutches and the recovery items for after the surgery: I was warned a wheelchair is not something that Medicaid would likely go for in this situation and I definitely believe it. So, after some shopping around, I’ve got my eyes on another cheap model that should be plenty sturdy from Amazon, and only about $200-ish dollars. I’m not trying to save up for a fancy nice personal wheelchair, that’s Far beyond my budget and for now is beyond what I require as I don’t need it for daily use. I’d like to purchase this for use during my recovery as well as to replace my wonky current chair that isn’t nearly as useful as it could be to me for events like conventions, and trips/visits to many other places that I’d otherwise need to stand for and hope there was a chair on site I could borrow or plenty of seating I could access easily. (Hint: there often isn’t, or if it’s available it’s out of the way and thus not as useful for me.)
