Kenits hopped up the rocks, trying to stay steady on her feet while her hands were full. Near the top she put foot down wrong, falling backwards and calling out.
Recognizing the voice, Garland sprinted out of the cave at the top of the mountain, jumped out, clearing the stone steps and slid to the cliffside, grabbing onto Kenits and pulling her up.
"Iâve got you, child. Now just relax."
He growled again, bearing his fangs
"your eyes are oranâe and your ârowlinâ at me. you still believe tâat the condense deserves to die." She sighed. "Wâen you started talkinâ of equality and tâe lowblood, I tâouât maybe you âad decided to stop being a subjuâultor. Maybe you âad forâotten." She balled up her fists. "But you âavenât! Your mad! your yellinâ at me because I said sometâinâ you didnât like! Your still the ârand âiâblood. Your still my lord. Even if you âad a lowblood moirial!"
"OF-FUCKING-COURSE I AM! WHO I CHOOSE TO BEFRIEND AND WHO I CHOOSE TO HATE DOESNT CHANGE WHO I AM."
Kenits grinned up at him, so happy it was a misunderstanding. She reached out and grabbed the book. She thought about all of her friends. Maybe she didnât have to hide them from Darama, not if her lord had been moirails with a lowblood. She handed the book back to him. âIâm sorry for my reaction me lord, it was inappropriate.âÂ
He snatched the book back from her, and huffedm turning around and sitting back at the fire.
She whinced when she was lifted up, but held on tight to the book. âNo way! Yatzee put some time of feckinâ voodoo on it! Tâereâs no way any of tâat is true. It âas to be a trick!â She struggled, but he had his hand right between her horns, which made movement almost impossible.
He shook her a few times, the anger in his voice more visible
"It is NOT a motherfuckinâ trick It is the truth!â
She closes her eyes tight and locked her arms, refusing to move. She mumbled under her breath. âyour lyinâ, you âave to be lyinâ. It canât be true, not after everytâinâ Rama told me. Not after tâe trial. Not after you killed âim.â
His eyes flared to orange and he let out of rough honk, throwing her across his hive and stomping back over to her.
"I WAS MOTHERFUCKIN FORCED TO KILL HIM. THE BITCH FOUND OUT ABOUT US AND MADE ME WATCH AS HER AND THE EXECUTOR STRAPPED HIM TO A MOTHERFUCKIN ROCK AND MADE HIM BLEED.
she used my friends to control meâŠcontrol me and make me finish the jobâŠ
AND I MOTHERFUCKINâ DID.â
Kenits rubbed the back of her head, letting the book slip out of her hand, tears running down her cheeks. She was scared, confused, and disappointed. But at the same time, she was relieved. She couldnât help it, she smiled and started to laugh, while her eyes continued to leak.
He jabbed the wall hard, and the cave shook.
"WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING, I DIDNT TELL NO MOTHERFUCKIN JOKE"
She smiled at him, so happy at his anger. "Iâm sorry me lord. Iâm just relieved."

She stumble backwards as he leaned in. She didnât know what to think, she didnât no how to feel. How could this be real? Her lord following a lowblood. The cast system meaning nothing. None of it made sense. Why did he tell her? Why did she ever bring the book to him? The book! She stagger to her feet, waking around the fire she snagged the book from his hands and backed up quickly.
He immediately reached out to her, grabbed her by the hair and lifted her off the floor. His voice a low intimidating growl.
"Give that to me."

Kenits hopped up the rocks, trying to stay steady on her feet while her hands were full. Near the top she put foot down wrong, falling backwards and calling out.

"He wasnât just a lowblood. He was a mutant. It almost frightened everybody, that candy-red blood. But he did amazing things with it. He used it to his advantage. He used it to forward his cause, and his message. The message that all trolls are equal, that the caste system was irrelevant.Â
The following he gained, all the trolls he inspiredâŠIt was impressive really, amazing even.Â
I admit, I was one of those people. But I already knew that, he and I had been moirails since we were very youngâŠ.And thatâs what made the end of his time so heartbreakingâŠâ
Kenits gripped her coat and looked down at the ground. What he was telling her didnât make sense. The cast system wasâŠâŠeverything. And a mutant leading troll was unthinkable. Her head felt dizzy. She gripped her coat harder and grit her teeth. And did he say moirail!? She was so confused, she didnât know how to feel, angry or broken hearted.
He looked at her and grinned
"You seem conflicted, whatâs on your mind?"
She looked up at him and chuckled when she saw his smile. âYou were just kiddinâ witâ me.â She relaxed. Of course, her was just joking around. There was no way her lord would have been moirails with a troll like that. âTâereâs no me lord would âave been followed a troll like âim. You were just pullinâ my leâ.â
His smile grew even wider. He shook his head and laughed.
"You really are that thick, arenât you? I wasnât joking my dear. What Iâm telling you is the truth."
She stared at him, a nervous smiles playing across her face. âyouâŠâŠy-you âave to be jokinââŠâŠyour tâe ârand âiâbloodâŠ..to be moirails witâ someone like tâatâŠâŠitâs some kind of sick joke.â Her smile faded as she looked at him, his expression unchanging, the hope for an explanation disappearing. âyouâŠ..canât.â
He leaned closer, his head almost coming through the flames like some sort of demon.
"I did."
She stumble backwards as he leaned in. She didnât know what to think, she didnât no how to feel. How could this be real? Her lord following a lowblood. The cast system meaning nothing. "This book belonged to The Disciple. The matesprit of the Signless. She crafted this book and recorded all of the Signlessâ teachings and sermons. She also kept it as a journal, it was all she had left of her love once he was taken from herâŠfrom all of us."
Garland leaned back, exhaled and brushed his hair out of his face. Even with the paint on his face, the sorrow on his face was clearly visible.
"And she was a good friend."
"Tâe siânless?" She stared at the book, trying to think of where she had heard that name before. "Wasnât âe some lowblood?" Her face tightened as she tried to think. She was a terribly uneducated troll. The only history she knew, the only history she cared about was those of the subjuggulators.

They come back to the cave and he sets her down by the fire. He sits on the opposite side across the fire, and opens the book, running his fingers over the pages.
"Do you know who this used to belong to, Kenits?"
"Tâe Sawbones. Malikiâs ancestor. Tâatâs wâere all tâe books are from." She watched as he flipped through the book. She couldnât read herself so she wondered what all the words meant.
