DIY industrial pipes can be used throughout your home as a cheap alternative to shelving, towel rails, coat hooks and even coffee tables! All the parts are available at your local hardware or plumbing store and do not require any special knowledge to fit and assemble. You can even spray paint the finished product afterwards to make it fit with your colour scheme! Here are 5 examples to inspire you to include them within your home. This is one of my favourite uses for industrial pipe, a towel rail and shelving unit in the bathroom! Make sure you use a spirit level to fit the unit otherwise it will not be completely level and things will eventually fall off. This is also a perfect example of spray painting the assembled pipe to match your colour scheme. Dana McClure and her husband Chris Lanier own this fabulous farmhouse in New York. It's everything I would look for in a home, simple, DIY filled and yet so stylish! Sometimes a simpler life lets you focus on what really matters and this home proves you don't need to have every empty space filled for it to look complete. Dana's job as a visual artist has certainly inspired her on this project. Don't be scared if you aren't as naturally gifted, just try and think about what you're trying to achieve and do what feels right! Normally I'm not a fan of having a cowhide rug however it fits in so effortlessly in this room. It matches the chocolatey tones of that gorgeous Eames chair perfectly! Most kitchens you see have a granite or tiled surface for preparation as they are practical, easy to clean and heatproof. One thing they certainly are not however is cheap. If you are trying to save money you cannot go wrong with a wooden butcher block counter top from Ikea. As long as you care for them correctly (which we will cover another time), they can last equally as long and in my opinion are much more appealing! I've picked a selection of my favourite kitchens that have them, so why not give them a go? Not all counters have to be dark. The natural colour of this counter top fits perfectly with the cream cupboard doors. The colour scheme is actually so muted that even the metal shelves blend in and stay hidden. Some may think this is a bad thing, but it's great considering how much you notice the wonderful flowers. The industrial style light above the sink really brightens the entire space. Lace curtains allow light to flood the room even when they're drawn and you're ready for bed. For some people this might be horrible but for me it sounds absolutely perfect! I never actually close my curtains when I sleep as the light that comes through in the morning helps me wake up early for work, and I'm normally not as exhausted when compared to waking in the dark. Fiddle Leaf Fig's are one of my favourite trees. Sadly I haven't been able to get my hands on one yet as they are quite expensive in England and unless you can find one at a local nursery you'll have to pay around 10 times more than America! They can be quite stubborn plants so follow these tips and they should grow nicely. Remember that by placing them in a pot inside you're stunting their growth so ensure to trim the root ball every couple of years or when the roots grow outside of the pot. Subway tiles are stunning in the bathroom. It's something you can do yourself relatively cheaply... If you have the patience! It's best to use them in moderation however so please don't go crazy and unless you are using coloured tiles try to stick with a darker coloured grout. We all love bed canopies, some are more sophisticated than others. Helen over at handmaidtails has made a lovely DIY bed canopy for her daughter as a play tent. While it was made for children, I have no doubt it would look stunning above most adult beds. I would certainly love to have one above mine. It's incredibly easy to make too! All you need is a Hula Hoop or PEX tubing, white electrical tape, curtains or lace netting and a hook to attach it to the ceiling. I'll let Helen take you through all the details here. Holly over at Avenue has made her bedroom look bright and modern with a few coats of white paint, matching bed covers and natural wooden features. Nothing is too complicated in this room and the open wardrobe and clean design makes the entire place look more spacious. Clothing rails can also be picked up from Craigslist and eBay along with wooden shelves from your local DIY store, so don't feel as thought it would be an expensive project. I love this kitchen from Smitten Studio. The couple are renovating a stylish cabin and with the farmhouse sink, butcher block counters and endless amount of light, you can see why this would be everyone's dream kitchen. Best of all... The sink and counter are from Ikea, so it doesn't cost a small fortune! Sarah Sherman Samuel has done a brilliant job merging their old farmhouse style with vintage taps and traditional cupboard handles with the crisp white tiles and clean lines of new modern and minimalist homes.
