Accidental print out (printer ran out of ink)
Similarly try with more dramatic approaches in painting detailed and wiping away areas.
Experimentation and accidents.
These two images both show the same two pictures printed on top of each other on acetate. Both have also been altered, whether by compression while still wet, or the use of hairspray to make the ink run. These would be really interesting to recreate in a painting.
Potential process:
1. very simple acrylic layer to get general shapes of the background down
2. once dried, add another acrylic layer with detail
3. while wet, get a sponge and squeeze out at the top of the paper/board to make the paint run a little
4. one dried add in another acrylic layer which is the top image
5. apply more water and aid the paint in dripping down the piece
6. once dried, come in with oil paint, adding in detail and figures etc
7. while still wet, pick specific areas and drip a small portion of turps to get the paint to run/blur
8. come in again with more detail, being very selective on where it is applied
repeat and alter until satisfied with an outcome.
Going back to my people watching photographs of city life.
Layering, isolation, black and white, simplicity and detail.
All of these need to be done to a more exaggerated effect to what is already in the painting shown here. More block-areas and solid-lines of grey are needed to emphasize areas. Similarly points of focus are needed through use of detail. Hands and face of the man, for example.
more depth, tonal variation, simple marks... are all needed. Do some quick experimentation to develop this.
The more you look, the more you see.
I too photos of myself reflected in the windows of the train from oxford to Edinburgh.
points of interest:
- subtle colour changes
- areas of detail and areas of simplicity
- layering
I thought these would be interesting to look at in more depth, this concept of the looking close you see one thing and from far away another. This has potential to be very interesting.... if done properly.
Work so far...
I have chosen to work on a smaller scale (A5) in this way pressure is taken off to fill huge areas of canvas or board with minute details. However it also makes it more difficult to maintain a high level of detail as the detail that is included is painstakingly small.
I am nearly finished with these (for stage 1) and so will return to them in a couple weeks after having started three more A5 paintings (context yet to be decided)
Thoughts?
Working with colour is something i am still uncomfortable with; finding that colors don't always mix in the way that i want them to, also my ability to capture tone and depth isn't as good as in my monochrome paintings.
Potentially paint two of the next three paintings from the same picture, showing the difference between painting in colour to that of black and white.
Catching up
Due to personal reasons my work this semester has gotten off to a slow and potentially bad start.
I have decided to take my work down two different routes.
1. Focusing on painting as the skill based medium it is... pushing forward my own artistic ability as far as i can in terms of capturing an individual, not just a figure, in portraits, and making them as realistic as possible.
2. 'the more you look the more you see' - giving this side of the project a far more ambiguous view. Going back to the person in the city (as touched on in second year) and the presentation of our dependence of technology and our ignorance of what is going on around us.
Me applying some touch ups in my space before the assessment. The painting on the ground to the left still needs to go up, and the supporting work also on the floor on the left will just lean against the wall beneath it. I have my après pictures to the right. On the table will be all my research, research report, professional practice and supporting work for all the pieces.
The final triptych and layout... There is more detail still to go into the individual paintings but it will do for now with my assessment on Tuesday. I will continue working on these until I am satisfied.
This child was very sweet as we gave him some bread, which you see in his hand. The dog behind him is his best friend and it was interesting to see that as we walked away he gave one of the rolls straight to the dog.
This little boy reminded me loads of my cousin and I think this is why i have such a desire to paint him. His face, and especially his eyes are incredibly expressive, as you can already see in my initial layers. My hope is that i'll be able to get to a level of hyper realism in his eyes.
This painting is of a lovely photo I took of a young mother and her baby. The women would walk around all day with their child strapped to their backs, I found this really lovely but also quite sad at the same time as all the women had to work full-time even with newborns.
I really hope I can capture the expressions on their two faces to perfection as they are beautiful.
As I really enjoyed working on the Peruvian woman, I've decided to make it into a series of three, developing them from images i'd taken while out there.
Drawing on the beautiful rural landscapes that surrounded my trip through the Andes, I've chosen to use three earthly colours as the backgrounds. Although their all different, they link together nicely. Similarly by having the middle a couple shades lighter, it draws the eyes and helps make a point of focus.
I did some more après studies... however not all of them are shown here.
I painted in acrylic on three of the studies, however disliked the way the paint moved and the outcome wasn't what i'd have wanted. While they're not shown here, I haven't thrown them away as i'll speak about them in my assessment.
The first one shown is my absolute favourite so far, as I feel it captures something of the joy and excitement surrounding the situation and the friendship between the two presented.
I want to pick my two favourites and develop these further, making them bigger and more/less detailed... experimenting with them.
I have also had the exciting proposition of these paintings being made into prints, which has given me some great ideas for generic ski and après images to paint and sell as posters.
Day project in painting my brother... a new take on the big painting i was doing. I prefer it in this style to the traditional, highly detailed painting i was aiming for... this is more visually interesting.
However although only a mock-up and idea testing, it is still not up to the detail level i'd like, so i may return to this at a later time.
Second painting, finished (for now, i will undoubtedly return to the piece later)
Second painting - stages
Next steps?
Over the next week I will develop more quick après paintings to create a collection of these of various different colours.
To further this, I want to look at pictures/photographs of people dancing and moving... and paint these, attempting to use the style to capture movement - Look at Degas.
I want to then pick my favourite ones of these to develop further.. with no real aim other than to see what I create and where I end up.
2nd painting in progress
I'm happier with this painting than the first as the background has more of a gradient and so is more interesting. While also some areas will be so loose it appears that they disappear into the background.
Points of focus will be in the hands and face, and in the surrounding areas, gradually dissipating. I feel that this will create something really interesting and more so than the previous one.
