The Day

[#FFF145 Rise and Fall]

ok, so this may be a loose interpertation of the prompt, it’s all I could manage this day, of all days, the day of it all.

Words:  Just around a hundred

Content:  No warnings

The cotton sheets were tucked under the mattress tight enough to bounce a quarter, two dimes, and a nickel.  The down-filled pillow was perfectly in place, resting at a gentle angle to the headboard.  An upside-down smiley face winked impishly on the silken pillow case.

A bed, perfectly made in the morning, without a flaw to be seen, undisturbed as it waited all day for one thing, one thing only.  A singular purpose.

Now with the sun low in the west, orange and red in the sky, it was time for its destiny to finally be fulfilled.  

To have a toddler tucked inside, waiting for whatever dreams may come.

Setting Heaven on Fire

For @flashfictionfridayofficial​ I have a response to this challenge, it’s a bit hard because I’ve written a few stories in this vein before, and so it feels like copying myself, and I don’t think I’d win that lawsuit. Anyway, it may not be a literal interpretation of the prompt, but I hope it works for people.

I heard them.  Every trudging step of the way.  

Not one moment of peace.  Just their continuous endless noise.

Crying.  Moaning.  Pleading.  

Begging in pitiful voices.  

I gave them no response.  I walked on and on, knowing I could never look back.

They called my name, made promises, offered treasures.

Trying to tempt me to turn around.

They wanted me to stop. To go no further.  To return and stay with them forever.

They didn’t like the path I was taking.  They knew where it would lead.

But they were too afraid to show their faces, too weak to grab at me, too selfish to think about what I needed.

That’s why I was leaving them behind.  

I came upon a threshold, a door that swung open as I approached, showing a blinding light.

They went silent.  

This was the final moment.  They wouldn’t dare to follow.

I finally decided to speak to them.

“I will never rest in peace, not among you.  I need a life I can be proud of living.”

And then I stepped off the clouds, and fell into the blazing sun.

Embroiled in a war? Is it an act of deliberation, an ignorant mistake? A consequence of bad decisions? Or maybe it is simply a fireworks display being enjoyed by the Gods! Who set heaven on fire? Who gave the orders in the first place? There might be repent involved! Forgiveness? Whether heaven is set on fire or not lies fully in your hand, dear writer. It Doesn’t Hurt

[#FFF139 It Doesn’t Hurt ]

Well, I have a lot of characters this might have worked for very well, but I didn’t quite feel like using any of them today. Luckily I’ve been watching a TV show that served to inspire me.

The sun was low in the west as I arrived, a painted field in the sky, the shadows from the house falling upon me as I strode up the hill.  A thousand joy-filled  memories passed through my mind with every step I took.  

A flower-filled spring party upon the lawn to celebrate some long-passed nuptials.  

The long-ago summer with clear blue skies that turned into a sudden storm and dancing in the cooling rains.

That harvest dance where smiles turned into kisses in the shadows behind the barn,

And that  chill winter’s morning when snow covered everything in a sheet of white.

So many days to celebrate, so many happy moments to recall, adding up to years in the end.   No ashes could make me cry, not with all of that to weigh against.

Billowing Smoke

This story didn’t go where I thought it might, but well, I guess it went somewhere.

Words:  213

Content:   Smoking!  Broken Promises!   

 My mother broke her promise to me.  Again.  

As soon as I stepped outside I could tell what she was doing.  The acrid smell hitting my nostrils told the truth.  Not that I had believed her when she’d said she was going out to look at the sunset.

Our patio faced to the east.     

“Mom, how could you!” 

She blew out a long billowing cloud of smoke, then stabbed out the cigarette on the iron railing, leaving a black stain of ashes.

“Blame it on spending too much time living in a dread and terrible world, sweetheart,” said my mother as she looked me over, “Is that really what you want to wear tonight?”

“It’s a dance, a real high school dance, I want to look nice.” I said, just a little embarrassed.  It’s not like she hadn’t been there when I bought this at a thrift shop, but this was my first time wearing a real dress.  And makeup.

She shrugged.  “You’re my little angel, it’s hard to see you grow up sometimes.  To imagine what your future might become.”

“It’s just one dance, it’s not like I’m Cinderella.”

Mom’s eyes narrowed as she looked at me, then she smiled.

“I should hope not, you aren’t going to stay out till midnight.”
