Owls hoot as a mighty wind dashes past leaves from a grove of trees. Currents of wind fly towards the air, howling with speed and in a moderate temperature.
On a grassy field, two women lay there close together. Their shoulders brushing and their eyes upwards onto the night sky. One of them sits up, looking at the other. She smiles, enthralled at peace in her companion's expression.
An expression that she yearned to see for an entire week. They were both stuck at work, only texting and calling each other through their phones. Even then, it's not the same. To her surprise, her darling suggested for them to meet at night in a forest. Because she wanted her there and she accepted it.
Tonight, she won't allow anything to take this away from her. It's dedicated to her darling only and not anything or anyone else.
If only she can re-arrange her schedule to find time with her, she'd do it.
"Isn't this. . . wonderful?" Her darling's eyes shine brighter than any stars above them. "Just two of us together in this field? Alone and without anyone else around?"
"It's certainly true, gorgeous," she answers with a laugh. "I'm so glad we're catching up. I really missed you so much, and I hate how works get in the way."
Her darling sighs. "Me too."
So, it unnerves her at watching how her darling squirms while crossing her arms. She tips her head back, peering up at the night sky. Dark and cluttered with various stars and moonlight glow. A dazzling sight for any mere moral to behold. Yet there seemed to be no serenity on her face. Only. . . worry.
Like she's struggling with a mist of bleak thoughts.
"What's wrong?" she asks, knitting her brows together.
"Nothing, I just. . ." her darling says, fiddling her fingers. She let out a shaky chuckle. "I'd like this to be longer, you know? I'd rather be here with you and get caught up in your. . . your everything. I can't stand to let this slip away."
She turns, fixing her eyes on her. "Hey, we're going to stay here together for an entire night. And if you're in, I'd be more than happy to camp with you. When I'm here, you don't need to fear."
"Pfft, I know that. My mind insists on ruining this moment and I hate that it does. I still. . . I still don't get how could be willing to. . . to make things work between us. I guess I'm a little confused that you'd pick me. When there's plenty of other people tripping themselves over for you. What I'm trying to say is that. . . I don't understand how I got so lucky to be with you."
Bowing her head, she moves her fingers across the grass to her wrist.
"Do you want me to cling to your hand while I explain to you?"
"Sure, okay. It would be. . . great."
Upon reaching for her hand, she slides her palm onto hers, and links their fingers together. She guides her closer to her, watching up at the stars ahead of them.
"You're the only person, who sees me for who I am. You aren't terrified at who I am and you're braver than any of those people. Sure, they're into me but they don't, and won't, understand me like you do. You've learned my deep and darkest secrets. Yet you didn't treat me differently than they might have. It's why I chose you: because you love me for my true self."
"That's. . . that's. . . I love you so much."
Without warning, tears slip under her darling's eyes. She swipes them off with another hand, sniffing and breaking out into sobs.
Her chest drops like lead down to her stomach.
Did she say anything that hurt her? She hated to see her like this.
She frowns slightly. "Dammit, I didn't mean to. . . I don't want to make you cry."
"No! It's fine! It's just that. . . this is so touching and I'm so. . . I get emotional, sometimes. It happens." Her darling gives a watery smile. "I'll be fine. I'm with you and it's more important."
"Still, I just want to make sure you aren't upset," she says. "Do you want to go back home?"
"I don't want to," her darling murmurs, snuggling by laying a head on her shoulder. "I'd rather stay under the moonlight with you."
With a smile, she strokes her hair. "Yeah, me too."
