“So when you’re dealing with grade two’s there's a typical pattern they tend to take, oftentimes…”
Yuji already wasn't listening, too distracted by something he'd never noticed before about his teacher. “Psst-! Kugisaki-” he whispered, quite loudly - the boy wasn't known for his subtlety. He dragged his chair closer to her desk in what he hoped was a stealthy manner, though the sound rang in the nearly empty classroom. Megumi all but rolled his eyes as he tried to focus on what Geto was saying.
“What do you want!” Nobara hissed through gritted teeth, side eyeing him in annoyance. Yuji, happy that he'd got her attention, pointed to their teacher, “look at Geto sensei’s hand! Look!”
The girl was about to call him stupid and go back to ignoring him ,when she noticed exactly what he'd been looking at.
A small silver band on his hand, his left hand to be exact, right on his wedding finger!
She spluttered slightly from shock, before slapping a hand over her mouth. The special grade sorcerer turned around to face them with a curious hum.
“Everything okay over there? Do you need some water?” he asks, eyeing them pointedly. He had heard the whole exchange of course, Suguru was far from stupid, and as he watched the two sink back into their seats in embarrassment he nodded approvingly and tried to continue his lesson, concealing the small smile on his face from their antics.
The class continued with a stiff silence from the two while Megumi carried on as he had been the whole time, just trying to pay attention.
After the bell rings Yuji and Nobara rush out whispering to each other conspirationally. Megumi doesn't bother trying to keep pace, they'll slow down eventually.
“Did you see it?!” Yuji exclaims, arms thrown out dramatically, nearly whacking Nobara in the face.
“Watch it you sloth! But yes, I did see it…” she sighs, shaking her head. She hums to herself with a hand on her chin as she walks. “Looked a bit cheap to me, but Geto Sensei doesn't look like the type to marry cheap… I mean his shoes are Prada…" She debates more with herself.
Those words mean nothing to Yuji but he nodded along either way. “Right- Prados or whatever, either way the more important question is who is he married to!?!?!” he's near enough shouting at the end and megumi smacks him upside the head, grumbling about him needing to be quiet.
“It’s none of your business who our teachers are married to, it's their personal life and we shouldn't intrude on that” he states sensibly.
Yuji groans and swings an arm around Megumi's shoulder, missing the small sputter and redness at the action. “Come onnn! Aren't you even a teeeensy bit curious?” he whines, trying to tempt the boy into gossiping with them.
“Not at all, you're way too nosey” Megumi argues, swatting Yuji away like a fly. The pink haired boy huffs and backs off from his friend, crossing his arms like some petulant child.
“Well, we're gonna figure it out, right Kugisaki?” he decides, already trying to employ the poor girl into his schemes. She scoffs and rolls her eyes, “only because I know you're go0nna be annoying if i say no” she grunts, but it was a terrible excuse to hide her own thinly veiled curiosity. Geto had never mentioned anything about a partner, let alone a spouse so safe to say she wasn’t exactly against this little investigation.
“Yes! Okay team marriage mystery-” Nobara and Megumi flinch violently at the terrible name, “-meet up at my dorm around six? I've got some new dvds we can put on, and- oh! Snacks! Snacks are important for secret missions! Okay-” Yuji proceeded to ramble for the rest of the way back to the dorms, Megumi mostly zoned out and just walked ahead a little. They didn't need to know what he knew, let them have their fun.
The later the evening got the more delirious these theories were getting.
“Wait, what if he’s like Okkotsu and he…married a curse?” Yuji suggests, tilting his head at the pictures and post its they had pinned up with some string.
“You disgust me.” Nobara states, throwing an empty can of cola at his head.
“Hey! Ow!” he exclaims, rubbing his head and pouting. “I mean he spends enough time around the ones he controls… he's had some of them years he says… you don't know what can happen in that time..” he grumbles, slightly insecure at being immediately shut down.
Megumi watches all this unfold for maybe another minute or so, but then decides he's had enough for the night. “I’m going to bed, don't stay up too late, we've got a test tomorrow” he drops casually as he gets up to leave.
“A TEST!?!?” The other two shout, scrambling up themselves in a panic and pleading with the dark haired boy to stay and help them study.
This does not sway Megumi at all unfortunately and he makes his way back to his own dorm.
Nobara groans and flops back onto the floor in disarray. “I knew I shouldn't have let you drag me into this” she huffs, throwing another can at Yuji. This time he manages to dodge, having the audacity to throw it back at her. “Yeah but what's more important? One measly little test…or the biggest mystery we'll ever have in our lives!” he exclaims, throwing his arms into the air with a wide grin.
Unfortunately his optimism wasn't quite so contagious as he hoped it would be and earned him a withering look from Nobara before she too got up to leave.
“...Send me a picture of the candidate list when you've finished it” she mumbles quickly, not trying to seem too interested before she left to go back to her dorm, leaving Yuji all on his own with a corkboard and red string set up, several open bags of snacks and impending doom in the form of a Nanami test upcoming.
“Nanami… I should add him to the list!”
Yuji was screwed.
The next day there were clear bags under Yuji and Nobara’s eyes, but their energy didn't seem to dwindle as they considered their list as if the names on it were murder suspects rather than marriage candidates. The conversation went from passing notes in class, to hushed whispers in the halls, to excited chatter on their lunch break.
Shoko Ieri was not expecting two first years to come stumbling into her office at noon with the same cadence as an overexcited dog but here she was. Something new everyday at this job really. “Miss Shoko! It's an emergency!” Yuji exclaims, coming to a hurtling crash against the poor woman's desk and sending many papers flying in the process. The brunette simply sighed and began to pick them up.
“Well I don't see broken bones or blood so I think you'll live, oh- take these to Gojo while you're here, I already have a migraine” she mutters the last part to herself more than anyone else. Yuji does a double take at the folders now placed in his arms and shakes his head. “O-okay but we do have an emergency!” He reinforces his point, placing the folders down carefully. Nobara decides to try and save the situation, pushing past the pink haired boy and attempting to appear more collected.
“We’re doing a little research, just for fun mostly but it's also for maths… graph making practice you could say" she lies as casually as she could, leaning an elbow on the other woman's desk with a casual huff.
Shoko raises a brow, not believing this for one second. “Really? And what data are you trying to collect?” she asks pointedly, watching the two fidget as she crossed her arms and stared them down.
The two stiffened for a moment as the collective brain cell they shared worked overtime to try and come up with a feasible topic that would get them the information they needed.
“U-uhhh… marriage statistics…within the eighteen to twenty…” Yuji looks at Shoko for a bit too long, “...twenty six range…”
Shoko was silent for a second, amused at the audacity. “Good choice, but unfortunately I don't fit that range, I'm twenty eight” she muses, entertained by the brief panic on the two’s faces.
Nobara cuts in again with a shaky laugh. “W-what he means is! From young adults to around mid thirties… he was being far too specific!” She tries to save the conversation, earning an enthusiastic nod from Yuji. “YES! Sorry- I uhm- I meant that… yeah…” he agrees, hope slowly dwindling at the look on the medic’s face.
Shoko nods slowly and rolls her eyes a little, “Well if you insist… yes I’m married” she answers plainly, going back to organising some medicines and assuming that was the end of that.
She turns back only to find the students still there. “...Anything else?” she asks tiredly.
They look at each other before looking back at her. “...Who are you married to?” Nobara asks hesitantly. The nurse snorts a little and shakes her head. “Nosy… I’ve been married to my wife for five years now, you might remember her… Utahime, she teaches at our other school?” she offers. The two were taken aback for a moment, this was its own revelation and surely something they'd be gossiping about later, but for now the two were satisfied.
“Thank you! This really helps!” they exclaim, nearly in unison as they once again make a mad dash out the door.
“You should ask Gojo too, if you're interviewing students with clan arranged marriages… he's got a funny story, get him talking when you take the files” she muses, before realising they'd already run off.
“Wait-! The–" Shoko tries to call them back, but they were long gone, “...files for Gojo… dammit…” she grumbles. Only when she looked down to grab them herself, they were already gone. In confusion she looked up, only to see Megumi holding them, looking just as exhausted as she did. “Thank you… see if you can just leave them on his desk” she requests, giving him a grateful nod. The boy returns the gesture before heading off in no rush of his own.
The marriage mystery gang had been on the run all day, eventually it was getting to the late afternoon… and they were out of ideas.
“Nanami-san and Geto-sensei don't talk enough… it's definitely not Miss Shoko… same with Miss Mei-Mei…. Ugh! We’re hitting a dead end here!” Nobara groans, sliding a hand down her face in frustration.
Yuji was in a similar state of disarray, a pout glued to his face as he dragged his feet along the pavement. “I wasn't even that curious, but now we've come so far… we need to find out, it's the principle!”
“No, I'm pretty sure we ruled out Yaga first” Nobara mutters, only half listening.
“No I mean like- ugh nevermind, not important” the pink haired boy huffs, shaking his head with his brow creasing in thought, “there has to be someone we missed…” he mumbles.
They heard Nanako before they saw her.
The girl walked down the street, slowing her usual pace to make sure her sister could keep up with her as she chatted Mimiko’s ear off about a supposedly unfair test she’d had to take earlier. “And it's hardly fair for them to expect me to work with Yuji,” she said the boys’ name with such utter disgust, “he's so slow! And he's the sole reason that there’s any infrastructure destruction in my missions!” she complains loudly, Mimiko nodding along with a small smile.
“I know… but didn't you cause a small landslide on your last solo?” the quieter twin argues with an amused look, only to yelp and swat at her sister who was now pinching her ear. “Who’s side are you on here!?” Nanako huffs accusatorily, both of the girls unable to suppress their giggles.
Nobara looked over at the two coming down their way, and she had a very sudden realisation. Who else would know who their teacher was married to other than his own daughters!? The ginger girl ran ahead and waved at them, a concerningly large grin on her face. Yuji stared in confusion for a second before seeing what she saw and reluctantly made his own way over. Anything for answers…
Nearly crashing into poor Mimiko, the girl came to a stop before the twins, a light scolding from Nanako for spooking her sister didn't deter her. “Do you know who Mr Geto is married to!?” she exclaimed, not even trying to be casual. Yuji came up behind her not too long after and huffed, Megumi right behind him. “They won’t tell us Kugisaki” he grumbles, pointedly looking at Nanako. He too had received a less than satisfactory result on that test, and found his own reasons to blame his mission partner. The twins were in shock for a moment, before looking at each other, looking at Megumi pointedly who merely shrugged, then turned back to each other sharing what seemed to be a silent conversation, Yuji mumbled a ‘creepy’ under his breath. After a moment, the girls shared a snicker and turned back to face the trio.
“I could be… persuaded” the blonde twin hums, as though she were really considering her options. Immediately Nobara and Yuji's shoulders dropped.
“What do you want?” Yuji grumbles, already wishing they hadn't asked them for help.
There was a glint in the girl's eye as she hummed in thought, pretending to confer with her twin. Quite quickly the act was dropped and she pointed to the dessert shop across the street. “Theyre doing a new special, neapolitan loaded crepes, we’d get them ourselves but…” Nanako decided they didn't need to know she'd run the phone bill up too much this month, and as punishment Geto was making the girls pay half each, “why should we when you're here and willing to get them for us huh?” she finishes decidedly, crossing her arms and raising a brow as she waits for their decision.
Yuji groans and is already turning around to leave, when behind him he hears a hesitant…
“How much are the crepes?”
And that was how Yuji and Nobara ended up washing dishes for a dessert shop.
“I can't believe you got us into this!” the boy grumbles, scrubbing at a pan covered in dried batter. Soap got flicked at his head by a disgruntled Nobara, who was changing the sink water for what felt like the thousandth time. The girls had simply taken the crepes and left, Nanako claiming she had some divine change of heart to protect her father’s privacy.
“I did this!? You’re the one who was so overly obsessed with a cheap ring that we ended up in this whole situation in the first place!” she argued, running the hot water for another moment before turning it off. The two bickered for another five minutes over this, ending in Nobara shoving Yuji quite harshly into the back door. The boy hit the door a bit too hard and it swung open, Yuji falling rather unfortunately on his ass.
“That was so uncalled for! What the hell is wrong with-!” but he cut himself off, the look of absolute shock on Nobara's face was enough for him to shut up. “What's wrong? What are you looking…” he trails off to follow her gaze, tilting his head back to see what she was seeing…
Holy shit.
Their two professors had just stepped out from a restaurant across the street, holding hands, and leaning in to kiss Geto on the cheek was-
“GOJO-SENSEI!?!?!” The two shouted and stumbled over themselves to catch up to the teachers, washing up duties long forgotten.
The two men turned around in confusion, Gojo tilting his head as he watched his two students bolt towards him.
“Hey I know you guys aren’t happy about Nanami’s test but don't harass me outside of work, I tried to talk him out-”
“Are you married to Geto-sensei!?”
Gojo was utterly confused, and for the first time in his life had absolutely nothing to say. His husband snickered next to him and put a hand on his shoulder.
“I happened to wear my ring to work the other day, it seems we’ve had some detectives on our case since” he explains, an amused look on his face as he regarded the two puffing for air. Gojo was quiet for another moment, before he too burst out laughing. “I can’t believe you guys didn't bother to ask me first! Why do you think I come to bother your lessons with him so much?” he questions, and it's now that Yuji and Nobara realise that those papers he called mission reports had always looked rather empty when he brought them to Geto…
“Better yet, why didn't you just ask me?” the man of the hour asks, brow furrowing a bit in mild confusion.
The two students got quieter still, shame now present on their features.
“Well- we didn't think you’d tell us…” Yuji mumbles sheepishly, shrinking into himself a bit. Geto shakes his head and tuts, “and I’d be well within my right if I didn't, but no, I see no harm in you knowing, you really should've just come to me first” he scolds, though with no real bite behind it. Eventually the teachers get the full story told to them, Geto struggling to hide a small laugh at what his daughters had done.
“I usually keep it on a chain,” the sorcerer states, pulling said necklace from his shirt, “as you both know, Gojo has the option of an invisible barrier around him - I don't, and run the risk of losing my ring, especially in this profession” he explains, dangling the silver band that had haunted the students for a few days now.
After many apologies from Yuji and Nobara, the teachers were on their way home again, Yuji getting reminded of some homework due tomorrow. The two reluctantly trudged back to the dessert shop, the owner shouting at the back door for them to get back over there.
This was going to be a long night, but strangely enough they were okay with that now.
Marriage mystery solved!
BONUS:
“In my defence, they could’ve said no”
Geto sighed, a hand over his face as he confronted his daughters. “Grounded. Both of you. Two weeks.” Nanako gasped and Mimiko hung her head in embarrassment, slight frustration on her face. She'd hardly been the problem this time!
“Oh so not only are you extorting us-”
“It’s your phone-”
“Youre now isolating us!?” Nanako was on a roll now, rambling about how unfair he was, about how it was Yuji’s fault, about how she was simply a business woman.
“Fair business isn't about taking what they give and then running away, that’s a scam”
“Oh please you're not much better! Dad told me all about how you used to steal his card back in school!” the girl stood her ground, glaring up at her father who was taken aback and reddened at the argument.
“That- was very- very different, your dad didnt mind-”
“Because you were distracting me with kisses!” called his husband from the kitchen. Geto groaned and rolled his eyes.
“Not helping dear!” he shouts back, head turned to the kitchen with a withering glare.
“I knowww!” Gojo sang back, exiting the kitchen with a grin and his hand in the cookie jar.
Geto huffed and snatched the jar away, narrowing his eyes at his husband who in turn pouted at him. He turned back to the girls, “one week, and double chores, best I can do”
Nanako groaned and went to protest, only for her sister's palm to slap over her mouth before she could.
“We’ll take it.” Mimiko agreed, giving their father a look of exhaustion. His expression softened slightly and he laughed quietly. He sent the two to bed and sighed, flopping on the couch.
Geto took a moment to rest his eyes, nearly drifting off before grunting as a weight settled on his chest. “Satoru” he mumbled, without even opening his eyes. His husband only grinned and settled comfortably on the couch with him, interlocking their legs and resting his head against his chest, right against his heartbeat. Suguru was still here.
“They really take after you..” the white haired man mutters fondly, “it is the exact sort of thing you would've done back in school” he adds cheekily, earning a laugh from his husband.
“Oh please, give me some respect…” he trails off, and for a moment Satoru assumes that was the conversation done.
“I would've aimed higher than crepes.”
A/N: I hope you enjoyed!!! The next one won't be so light hearted...
