ย ย ย ย ย ย ย The first remark slid throat the air, grazing the top of his head but not hitting him as his focus remained on the brunette. Even as the other leaned in, his mind wandered farther and farther from the cafe. His heart patted the inner walls of his chest hard as he fantasized but the hushed voice startled him from his daydream. Eyes wide and suddenly aware of his surroundings he looked across the table at the man.ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย A moment passed as Richard processed the statement and he remembered what they had met for.ย โAh! Well, I donโt care much in all honesty. All this is none of my business. Iโm just the messenger.โ A glass of sparkling water was set before him and he smiled up at the passing waitress. He took a sip of the water before leaning back and murmuring,ย โCanโt imagine what got you into this business.โ His attention drifted to a small piece of fluff on his shirt that was picked off quickly. Looking up he frowned,ย โI would suggest you lean back in your seat. With the way youโre sitting people might think Iโm soliciting.โ
ย ย Charlie isnโt easily put-off by most people, but this guy is something else. Not one to ever really stand up for himself, especially in the face of someone with such an imposing aura, he stares at the guy in slack-jawed disbelief before slowly sitting back in his chair with only a hint of annoyance scrawled across his features. He doesnโt want to ruin what could be a fruitful business relationship even if he does want to smack this guy across the mouth.ย
ย ย โRight,โ he says slowly, tone carefully controlled to try and not show his offence. โWouldnโt want that.โ He studies the man with lips pressed together, then says,ย โAnd I got into this business because Iโm good at it, and it makes me good money.โ Not money that he really needs ย ย ย what with the trust fund and everything. Itโs more of something he has fun doing, but heโs not about to explain all this to this man.ย
ย ย โSpeaking of, I assume youโve got the money?โย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย The annoyance was nearly tangible. So think in the air that he could nearly reach out and throttle it. Instead Richard lifted himself from his seat and pulled it with him as he moved to the manโs side. Now sat nearly shoulder to shoulder, he deflated somewhat.ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย In a hush he confessed, โIโm sorry. Iโm making a terrible impression and I didnโt mean to offend youโฆMany employees of my fathers tend to occupy this cafe andโฆmaybe that just has me tenseโฆThey have warped morals. We could speak about this transaction at the loudest volume we could muster and they wouldnโt bat an eye but if I were to set my hand on top of yours, they would be at my fatherโs office in a matter of minutes.โ His voice dipped even softer, nearly getting lost in the air between his lips and the manโs ear. โI really donโt agree with thisโฆNot your work I mean but the documents my father has requested. I think thereโs an art to what you do. A part of me almost admires itโฆbut I donโt condone what my father is doing. I donโt agree with a lot of what he does but here I am.โย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Richard suddenly realized how far he had strayed from the topic. He disclosed far more than he should have to the near stranger. With some embarrassment he said, โYes, the moneyโฆI have it.โ
Have you noticed the large number of meteorological phenomena lately? Earthquakes. Volcanoes. Drought. Apocalyptic meteorological phenomena. The increase of sickness. It was always possible to think, whatever your personal problem, thereโs always nature. Spring will return even if itโs without me. Nobody loves me but at least itโs a sunny day. This has been a comfort to people as long as theyโve existed. But itโs not available anymore. Sorry. Nobody loves me and the sunโs going to kill me. Spring will return and nothing will grow. Some people might feel concerned about that. But it makes me feel important. Iโm going to be around when the world as we know it ends. Iโm going to witness unprecedented catastrophe. I like a pileup on the motorway. I like the kind of war weโve been having lately. I like snuff movies. But this is going to be the big one.
The Skriker, Caryl Churchill
ย ย ย โ Dancing you say ? โ She looked up at him and her wide brown eyes showed her instant perking up.ย โ Why, Iโd love to. โ Her excitement brewed at the image of the music and singing that now floated in her mind. Going out with Richard and spending time with him was a thought she adored and any uneasiness from before melted away from herย countenance.ย โ Do you really mean it, Richard ? What kind of dancing ? Oh ! Iโll have to find something to wear. โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย It seemed as though her innocent excitement was electric in the air and charged him as he smiled easily at her.ย โOf course. Itโs been a while since I had a good dance.โ He answered before taking her small hand in his.ย โAny kind youโd like!โ His other hand came to her hip, gently lead her under their joined hands in a twirl.ย
