The corona pandemic may have killed significantly more people worldwide than official data shows. According to a recent study, 18.2 million more people died between January 2020 and December 2021 than would have been expected in non-pandemic years. Around 5.9 million corona deaths are officially recorded during this period. "Our results indicate that the full impact of the pandemic was much greater than the official statistics suggest," writes the international research team led by Haidong Wang from the American University of Washington in the journal The Lancet.

The biggest vaccination campaign in history is underway. More than 159 million doses have been administered across 76 countries, according to data collected by Bloomberg. The latest rate was roughly 5.80 million doses a day. Across the U.S., 14.6 doses have been administered for every 100 people, and 70% of the shots delivered to states have been administered. The path to immunity in the U.S. - In the U.S., the latest vaccination rate is 1,621,693 doses per day, on average. At this rate, it will take an estimated 9 months to cover 75% of the population with a two-dose vaccine.

Global effort to stop Covid-19 - The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has now been cleared for use across North America, Europe and the Middle East, and vaccination campaigns have begun in at least 76 countries. 

That shot and the vaccine from Moderna were both found to reduce coronavirus infections by 95% in trials of tens of thousands of volunteers. When will life return to normal? It’s a complicated question and the subject of debate among epidemiologists. While the best vaccines are thought to be about 95% effective, it may still be possible to spread the disease after getting inoculated.

On a global scale, that’s a daunting level of vaccination. Shots are currently being reported at an average rate of 5.80 million a day. At that pace it would take years to achieve a significant level of global immunity. The rate, however, is steadily increasing, and new vaccines by additional manufacturers may soon be available.

The path to immunity around the world - Globally, the latest vaccination rate is 5,803,044 doses per day, on average. At this rate, it will take an estimated 5.4 years to cover 75% of the population with a two-dose vaccine.

With the start of the global vaccination campaign, countries have experienced unequal access to vaccines and varying degrees of efficiency in getting shots into people’s arms. Israel’s rate of innoculations dwarfs the efforts of other nations, with 68.0 doses administered for every 100 people. Most countries haven’t yet given their first shots.

Death defying swimming pools are set to become the newest architectural trend in central London, allowing visitors to float over 200 meters above the capital’s skyline. Pool designers at Compass Pools have developed Infinity London, the only building in the world to incorporate a 360-degree infinity pool. The floor of the pool is also transparent, allowing visitors to see the swimmers and sky above.

Swimmers will access the pool through a rotating spiral staircase based on the door of a submarine, rising from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out. Boasting an innovative twist on renewable energy, the pool’s heating system will use waste energy from the air condition system for the building.

2. About a hundred years ago, however, the term marijuana became common in the United States, the result of anti-cannabis, anti-immigrant advocates trying to link recreational use of the plant to migrant workers from Mexico.

3. The American groups rallying against both the plant and the people they distrusted borrowed a term — marihuana — that came to prominence first in Mexico.

4. The word marijuana and all its spelling variants, however, may not have Latin American roots. Some researchers have argued the word originated in China, where ma ren and ma hua refer to different parts of the plant.

Octopuses are also capable of mastering complex aquascapes, conducting extensive foraging trips, and using visual landmarks to navigate.”

Octopuses are considered the only definitively conscious invertebrate, meaning they’re the most developed animal that’s least similar to humans and, as such, the closest thing to an alien on this planet.

Food waste is really, really bad for the environment. It takes a land mass larger than China to grow the food each year that is ultimately never eaten – land that has been deforested, species that have been driven to extinction, indigenous populations that have been moved, soil that has been degraded – all to produce food that we then just throw away.

In addition, food that is never eaten accounts for 25% of all fresh water consumption globally.

The value of this wasted food is worth over $1 trillion. To put that in perspective, in the USA food waste represents 1.3% of the total GDP.
