ok this is actually better than I knew, because if you look at her TikTok it goes

August 2023: one clip of her singing with a respiratory infection to demonstrate how low her voice could go

November–December 2024: covers of Adult Contemporary and sad girl piano pop, stuff like Sara Bareilles and Billie Eilish. it's nice and you can tell she's got a great voice but it's nothing to go viral about

August 2025: the metal screaming begins. you can tell that it's the same room and same equipment in the videos last year, but darker (and eventually she starts adding candles)

The cynical interpretation of this is that she didn't get any traction in one genre and jumped to another. I don't think half a year to a year is a realistic time frame to develop that scream but I'm not a vocal coach. The generous interpretation is that she (or her manager or whoever, I think her brother might be involved?) was trying to force herself into a more mainstream style, and eventually she said fuck this, I can do better.

The metaphysical interpretation is that she reflects the ongoing spiral into madness of the United States since January 2025. Everyone's souls have been corrupted and blackened over the past year or so. These are very metal times. She's just like us! Except we can't sing like that.

judging by this comment on TikTok she's at least somewhat a real person, also Jessica here may have signed herself up for way more than she bargained for lmao

furthermore, she only filed to register the MAPHRA trademark at the end of last month, as an individual, not a corporation, and with herself as correspondent, not a lawyer. (the Goods and Services description is weird but seems to come up on a lot of trademark filings for bands and musicians.) it reads like her going "oh shit I'm going viral I need to take care of that." in general the air of mystery surrounding this seems half intentional (first rule of showbiz: always leave them wanting more) and half like she's just one person who can't keep up with the internet's hunger for content. if she had typical music industry representation, let alone any AI involvement, the suits would have set all this up beforehand. also existing AI can't do this. also if it was AI the AI bros would be talking about it nonstop.

yes, the audio is probably not from the same take as the video. yes, there's probably some sound post-processing going on, there always is, but her squeaky "I"s in Doomed are still there. It's not suspiciously clean.

Bring Me The Horizon is starting a US tour at the end of the month. They could bring a guest singer on stage one night, and she could prove she can do it live. BMTH is getting fresh songwriting royalties off a 10-year-old song, they have no reason not to support her.
