On this day, 1 July 1943, gay Dutch anti-Nazi resistance fighter Willem Arondeus was executed by occupation forces. His resistance group falsified identity papers for Jewish people, and in March they attacked the Amsterdam registry, destroying thousands of records against which full papers could be checked. The unit was betrayed and most members were arrested. Alongside Willem, 11 others were executed. Before his execution, Willem asked a friend to testify after the war that "homosexuals are not cowards". US is ‘simply choosing not to stop’ Ebola outbreak after massive public health cuts, experts say

Hundreds of cases reported in the DRC after USAID has been dismantled and key scientific research canceled

A world-class Ebola lab in Frederick, Maryland, with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was designed for exactly this scenario. The lab would normally be swinging into action, following up on research indicating monoclonal antibodies and a vaccine might be effective against this strain, possibly testing those treatments and vaccines, performing in-depth sequencing work on the samples shared during the outbreak. But that lab was shuttered last year, with staff laid off abruptly and their work – key for preventing and responding to outbreaks – ended with no notice. The website for the lab is still closed, indicating it has not been revived during this outbreak.

On this day, 9 July 1917, in New York City, anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, were sentenced to serve two years in prison, to pay fines of $10,000 each, and to be subsequently deported to Russia for violating conscription law during World War I. The pair had previously formed a No-Conscription League, and agitated against the war. They defended themselves at trial, and used the opportunity to talk about their political ideas. Before they considered the verdict, the judge then told the jury: "In the conduct of this case, the defendants have shown remarkable ability. An ability which might have been utilised for the great benefit of this country, had they seen fit to employ themselves in behalf of it rather than against it. In this country of ours we regard as enemies those who advocate the abolition of our government and those who counsel disobedience to our laws by those of minds less strong. American liberty was won by the forefathers, it was maintained by the civil war, and today there are the thousands who have already gone, or are getting ready to go, to foreign lands to represent their country in the battle for liberty." He then instructed the jury that "whether the defendants are right or wrong can have no bearing on the verdict. The duty of the jury is merely to weigh the evidence presented as to the innocence or guilt of the defendants of the crime as charged." With their sentencing, US Marshal McCarthy stated: "This marks the beginning of the end of Anarchism in New York." The only reason that AI has any presence in our economy is that Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Amazon are intent on spending more than $765 billion in capital expenditures in 2026 and a trillion more in 2027 because they have no other hypergrowth ideas, even though generative AI has yet to show any real potential as something that can drive meaningful revenues (let alone profits), as evidenced by the fact that none of these companies break out their actual AI revenues, a point I made on CNBC late last week.  Google does not have the next Google Search, Microsoft does not have the next Microsoft Office, Meta does not have the next Facebook, and Amazon does not have the new AWS. That’s why they need you to believe that AI is a big deal without them ever having to prove why outside of capital expenditures. They want you to assume that all this money can’t be wrong, even though when you remove OpenAI and Anthropic (who represent 89% of the revenues of the largest AI companies) the AI industry is, at best, pulling in $20 billion in annual revenue.

The second photo shows members of the Patriot Front group (a white supremacist and nationalist group, formed in 2017, that openly advocates what they call "American Fascism") traveling on the subway during the 250th anniversary of the U.S. independence in Washington D.C., while a Black woman watches them. The photo is by photographer Cheney Orr, taken on July 4, 2026, 70 years after the first photo.

Fun fact about shipping container houses is that because so many shipping containers are used to transport hazardous materials and are unsuitable to live in for contamination reasons, it's often easier to make them out of entirely new, unused shipping containers than to source appropriate second hand ones. Which destroys the entire purpose of shipping container houses. Because we already know how to make rooms that are cheaper, better insulated, and more spacious and easy to acquire and transport than brand new shipping containers.
