“The only man here was that arse with the umbrella.” He replies with a shrug, flipping through the sheets of paper on the clipboard. Hooking his cane to the bed, he leans against as he tugs a pen out of his pocket to write down the time.

“I nearly throttled him… thinkin’ he can come in here and threaten to sue. ” Shaking his head, he tsks and goes around writing down Holmes’ vitals. He had kicked the man out after that, refusing to let him near his patient until further notice. 

“The pain in your chest should go away after a while. The healing process varies for a lot of people. I had to restart your heart twice.”

As this conversation goes on, he gets paged several times. Each time he’ll glance at his pager and then ignore it. Yawning again, he checks the IVs. Eventually, he plops down in the plastic chair beside Sherlock’s bed, writing down comments and ignoring his pager some more.

there is a low, long groan that comes deep from sherlock’s chest that ha absolutely nothing to do with pain. well. at least not     p h y s i c a l    pain.  “   it would have been kinder for you to let me die.  “  she sighs towards the end, closing her eyes. thinking, with what limited capacity she can muster at the moment; how, what her brother would demand of her in retribution for this little miscalculation of hers. 

it is a problem for the future her to deal with, she is forced to conclude, cracking open her eye to study this irreverent doctor at the fifth beep. and irreverent is an apt descriptor, there is already an obvious disregard for traditional societal cues, for expectations. interesting, if only ever so vaguely. far more interesting is his tanline, the cut of his hair...                                   “     afghanistan or iraq.     “

“Good to see you’ve finally rejoined the land of the living.” 

He yawns, stifling it with his hand as he stiffly gets out of the chair in the corner. He had been napping, having been awake for nearly 48 hours now. Surprisingly enough, his most recent patient, has been the quietest of the bunch.

Leaning on his cane, he goes over to the woman’s bed, picking up the clipboard on the end of her bed to look it over.

                                      “How are you feeling, Miss Holmes?”

her head falls back against the pillows with a soft ‘thump’-- and oh, what a mistake that was, needles driving into her brain stem, her occipital lobes. 

“    horrible.    “  in a word. a second to gather herself, to rein in the ache before her gaze turns, fixes on the doctor at her bedside with razor sharpness. 

“    where is sebastian?    “  gone, she expects, or perhaps still at the party. the question is a hollow one, empty as her expectations. she wonders if he will even notice she is gone or if some other girl has stolen his attention for the ... evening? morning? whatever time it was.

     she is aware of a distinct shivering pain that begins behind her eyes and radiates  out, settling to swirl deep in her stomach, to circulate her limbs in lethargic pulses. she remembers.... lights. sebastian’s arm around her shoulders, a sharp prick in her elbow. bliss, soaring, euphoric, the likes of which has not graced her senses in far far too many months, the joyous frenzy that came with. then white. then nothing at all. 

lifting her head only serves to further agitate that pulsing ache, and now she sees where she is.

“I was looking into sheets of thick glass at my glass manufacturer’s factory, and noticed how the material darkened as they added more layers—the same way the sea does as it deepens. I wanted to use this effect to replicate a real piece of the earth’s sea bed. Like a mythical power had lifted a perfect rectangle straight from the earth’s crust to use as his personal ornament.”
