July-August 24
This summer is different.
July is difficult 🌀
2024.08.10 | A bit sick but still at it
Today’s goals:
Finish funding application & send to supervisor
1 hour on thesis
Prework for class tonight
[ 10th july, 2024 • summer holidays ]
july has been a blessing and i'm so grateful for all the things i've been able to experience and do
-> reading The Bee Sting, by Paul Murray, and i'm enjoying it as much as i expected (a lot!)
-> relearned how to ride a bike
-> gorgeous sunsets surrounded by trees
-> studying Danish (want to focus a bit more on that but it's summer vacation, i want to chill)
Doing a PhD alongside with anxiety and depression sucks especially in a foreign country. 🌀
People who experience this how do you cope and move forward personally and academically?
17.06.2024 // came home at the end of May for a month and hence, the lack of posts! I got done with my coursework and now the focus is on my ethics application. It's quite nerve-racking but it has proven to be a good anchor and guiding post for my thesis.
I'll continue to be away from tumblr because I'm trying to live from day to day and it is good to be away from social media from time to time. I have been turning inward, focussing on myself and trying to be patient.
9 June 2024
Finally, I found time to study because I have two days off. I wish I can be able to study every day 🙏🏼📚

LMU opened the area with the fountains 🥹
I was not the academic weapon I initially thought. I’m eepy and tired and life is stresy, depresy, lemon zesty but I persevere

I would like to apply for a scholarship, but I can't avoid this huge impostor syndrome. I had really bad grades in my bachelors.
Of course I had excuses for that. The fact that I am studying in a foreigner language. And also the fact that I work since the third semester and fully support myself financially since the fifth.
I know that the scholarship should be there for people like me. At the same time, It freaks me out that they want above average grades and extreme extracurricular activities.
I have some extracurricular activities and below average grades. But it is extremely hard to do everything and be everything. Sometimes I have the feeling that scholarships programms is only helping the people who doesn't really need it.
I know people who have an infinite amount of money saved given by their parents, never had to work in their lives and get scholarship because their notes are great. Also know people who works their asses off because they have to fulfil visa requirements or whatever, and got their scholarship rejected.
I am not sure if those are isolated cases. But they definitely don't help with my impostor syndrome.
I experience very similar problems. You shouldn't apologize for your grades.Unfortunately some academic funding resources like dfg grand for example make very clear that work life balance is not an option. I was in a talk last year about how to apply for funding in germany and many postdoc women asked questions about what if i have a gap or dont publish so much because of children etc and the main phrase i remember was that this funding supports science and people who put science on top of everything because this is what the dfg grand want to support people dedicated only in science. I found this very disturbing. Because the scientific community is made of real people who are scienctists and have also personal life in the majority and in this way the selection happens to favor science but in an inhumane way.
Even though i am not the most suitable person to advice you because im in the same loop of procrastination and avoidance i would like to share how i am planning to puch myself to apply for scholarships. For me its very difficult to solve this problems first and then apply so my idea is just to buy a super nice and beautiful little notebook and dedicate ot only for writing about the scholarships i am interested in a very fancy and appealing way. This procedure makes the processes more fun for me to actually apply. Just romantisize it and do it because for me its very difficult to first solve the imposter feelings and then try. So make it fun, try and in the meantime work on the issue and feelings. 🫂
hello!! i’m curious what kind of species you study for your thesis work! also happy to see another eco-evo gradblr <3
Hii eco evo buddy! Im studying blue tit pedigrees! What are you working on? Thank you for reaching its so nice to see gradblr accounts close to my field 🤩
that’s so fun! I’m working on a succulent plant called pickleweed that lives in salt marshes :)
Cool! Plants are awesome! I did my MSc in plant mol biology. Enjoy the field season and post pictures for us behind the screens. Very inspiring account! ⭐
saw this guy while I was out in the field the other day, fairly certain they were dead or dormant because the area had dried up after tides went down.
species: Batillaria attramentaria
common name: Japanese mudsnail
found it on a roadside tidal marsh in a patch of Salicornia near the upland transition zone, where it switches from marsh to more grass/shrub plants, there were a bunch!
