I love giving and receiving fic reviews, but for a long time the whole process of writing a review used to be very fraught because I wanted to show my appreciation but I didn’t want to leave a generic “Loved this, please write more!” like every other comment the author had already gotten and was probably sick of. (Note - as an author, we do not get sick of these comments. We do not get sick of any comments.) But I figured something out a while ago and I figured I’d share it. How to leave a good comment on a fic: PICK A LINE.

Literally any line. Pick it as you’re reading. If a phrase or a sentence or a paragraph jumps out at you, highlight it and hit Ctrl+C. Then save that puppy until the comment section, paste it in, and let the author know why you liked it.

“___” My favorite line, it was hilarious!

“___” I’m gonna cry! Poor Character B!

“___” That is totally something Character A would say.

“___” omg this totally sums up their whole relationship, doesn’t it?

I’m a writer who is friends with a lot of writers. I have never met a writer who didn’t fucking love this. Worried that you’re not leaving a comprehensive review? It’s okay. Tell the author about the five-word sentence that you loved in their 10K word fic, and they will glow. I’m telling you this is foolproof. Take the stress out of commenting. Pick a line. Make a writer’s day.

This is a Supernatural fic. It follows the main story line and I guess you could consider it a bit AU considering the OC is not in the original story. 

I didn’t like this fic at first. It took me several chapters before I could really get into it. Mainly because I just don’t like OCs in the Supernatural universe all that much. But once I got past a few I was like, okay, this isn’t so bad. And then it got good! So I enjoyed the read very much!

Check it out, but give it a chance and read past the first several chapters.

This is a Harry Potter fic that is really, really good. The summary drew me in because at the end it says it features “Harry with a backbone.” Like, what does that mean? But oh damn, it’s true!

Totally worth the read! It makes up for things in the fandom that I just can’t stand. Harry was a strong character and sometimes people write him out to be this whiny, useless child. It irritates me.

I’m a huge Yu Yu Hakusho fan so I have combed through most of the good fics that are out there, this is one of them. I really enjoyed how the author integrated their OC into the story and I’m a big Kurama fan, so I like that this story centers around him and their OC. Also, how they wrote Yusuke was spot on and hilarious. The sequel to this, Lithium, is even better!

Warning, lots of bad language and also the main OC has an eating disorder, so this might be triggering for some people.

I just started this one the other day, it’s a Killua/OC fic which normally I wouldn’t be able to stand. I prefer an aged up Killua/Gon fic, as they are like an OTP of mine. Except this story is super well written and it’s interesting. I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s worth a read! Also for a more mature audience. Which should be kind of obvious as it’s a Hunter x Hunter fic and idc what anyone says, that series is messed up. Especially when you get to the Chimera Ant arc.

This is a Draco/Hermione fic! While I normally enjoy Draco/Harry, I also kind of like these two together and the auther Bex-chan did a great job with this fic! They’re completely in character in my opinion (other than the fact they end up sexually attracted to each other) and this story is worth the read. Meant for an older crowd, as a lot of it is nsfw.
