I've been rewatching Project Runway s4 and I think it might just be my comfort TV. I love watching Christian Siriano as a brat who has to be taken down several notches to become the designer he is today, I think the contestants are all fairly likable and they don't fight over dumb shit. And also, Christian isn't the only talented one in the bunch, I think Chris March (RIP sweet angel) and Jillian Lewis were also really good at what they did. The season aired in 2007, a decade in fashion that deeply sucked, but I still like so many of the looks. I'm this close to posting recaps just because at this point any forum or site that talked about it is long dead and gone gvhvhv, and I really want to argue with judge decisions somewhere.

The Muslim minority is definitely a thing in Croatia lol, there are more Muslims than there are Roma. But it's very different because it's mostly Bosnians and other white balkan people due to the Ottoman empire, it's not the story of Muslim immigrants like in every other version.

Hi anon 🍂 No lol, just to be clear I know that Muslims aren't a minority in the Balkans. My post was meant to be quick and off the cuff without thirty preambles and meandering asides about what I know or don't know, vs what the team said or didn't say . And that's because my real question was, if Muslims are so common in Croatia that a story of immigration and otherness wouldn't make sense as a season for a Muslim character, then certainly there must be Muslim characters in roles that, in other countries, would have been played by actors who fit the general idea of who a local is.

Tbh I think having a Muslim character in one of the roles that other Skams usually save for a non Muslim is a missed chance, because while Sram is first and foremost for Croatian audiences, a Skam remake WILL be watched outside of its country of origin. And it would've been great for those audiences to see how Muslims are part of other societies. As is a missed chance (for Croatian audiences too) not to have poc in any role other than Vanessa. But, like I said in comments to my original post, we been knew that this is how the Skams have operated in many of the versions.

Sram question: I know that Vanessa is Romani rather than Muslim, because Muslims aren't a minority in Croatia like in other Skams' countries of origin. But is any of the main characters a Muslim?

I'm sure Jacob Tierney's input as a gay man has made Heated Rivalry more accurate to the gay man experience than Rachel Reid's Harlequin book, but I gotta crack tf up about Ilya rimming Shane the first time they do anal because "gay men don't need to say ilu prior to eating ass", but Shane can and will hold off on anal sex for two fucking years (indeed any kind of sex at all) because he got his feefees hurt that Ilya didn't celebrate his Rookie of the Year award with him.

It's heartbreaking to think of the Skams in 2025. With Trump back in power, shaking down the EU like a mafia boss that has nothing to hide anymore, fascist parties gaining more ground each day throughout Europe, the desperate attempts of Ukraine and its leader to not be forgotten and abandoned, the genocide in Gaza, and the vilification of immigrants, especially Muslim ones.

The Skams now feel like a small (but nonetheless crucial, for their viewers), somewhat limp, last-ditch attempt to teach audiences to be empathetic towards their fellow human. A somewhat optimistic attempt to turn the car around on Trump #1 before COVID, climate catastrophes, inflation, the proliferation of tourist apartments pricing out residents... led people to surrender to fascist propaganda.

I don't think the remakes ever had the kind of audience numbers that Skam had in Norway, so I can't really say that society would be different now if their efforts at social justice had been more vigorous -- but when I remember the Sana seasons, or the truly horrendous messaging re: teen activism, in Mailin's season, I can't help but wonder whether there'd be a small contingent of teens prepared to deal with and fight against the torrential of fascist propaganda online. Instead of youth populations who are more likely than other generations to vote for fascist parties because they've bought the lies hook, line and sinker. What we got was Mailin's season, one of the earliest examples of media showing complete disdain towards "wokism".

I don't know how useful an exercise it is to revisit the Skams in 2025. (And yes, I know there's now Sram in Croatia, which I haven't seen because I find it completely pointless to revisit the same plots in 2025 without the slightest attempt to address the current political climate.) But I keep going back on this blog and reading some of the posts I made. And thinking of all the posts I said I would write and never did.

German friends!

As some of you might know, I'm doing a trade school program, where I'm trained to act as the go-between people that for different reasons do not use oral language (Deaf and HoH, deafblind, non verbal people with ASD, and others) and society at large.

This program includes the possibility of doing a 3-month internship/apprenticeship somewhere in Europe.

I would like to do it in Germany, but my school doesn't have an agreement with any German institutions. THAT SAID, I am free to locate institutions myself, and get in touch with them in order to facilitate an agreement.

Would anyone help me writing a coherent email, and assist a little with locating Wohnheim for deafblind people? (I've been doing some googling, but I'm clueless as to how to find them, if there's a list somewhere or anything. Also there might not be a specific one, in Spain we only have one that specifically works with deafblind people.)
