I’ve been binge-watching Code Geass for the last couple of days, and I just finished the first season. How much of a cocktease do you think that must have been when it was first airing, to have to wait on that cliffhanger?

My feelings for this so far have been a bit of a rollercoaster - I thought the first ten episodes or so were compelling but there was a fairly long stretch after that when it felt like it lost focus quite badly - stuff was happening, some of it important, but it seemed like it couldn’t quite decide where to go. When it finally gathers itself up for the series finale it comes back together as something very different than what it was when it started - but oddly, no less compelling. If nothing else I’m still interested in where it’s all going.

“The series takes place in the year 2196. Earth is at war with a race of alien invaders called the Jovian Lizards. A company called Nergal designs a space battleship, the ND-001 Nadesico. While the ship is powerful and its crew consists of the top civilian experts in their fields, these individuals tend to have “some slight personality disorders”. The primary protagonist, Akito Tenkawa, is a boy with a mysterious past; once a resident of Mars’ Utopia colony, he escaped its destruction by the Jovian Lizards and arrived on Earth, with no memory of how he got there but a terrible fear of the invaders. He hates fighting and only wants to be a chef. However, he is constantly called on to act as a pilot of one of the Nadesico’s Aestivalis - humanoid combat robots. The synopsis made this show sound like the worst thing ever. I was ready to watch a few episodes and cringe at some dumb harem anime. But the show ended up hooking me, despite me going in ready to hate it. There were some rough patches, but overall it was a really fun time.
