Figurative Theory, a theory presenting itself as an image - a concept referred to be Penelope Haralambidou as “an alternative practice in architcture, which allows transgression of established modes and points to ideas impossible to grasp through the profession of purely discourse-based theoretical investigation”.
Based on an analysis of Aldo Rossi’s collage La Citta’ Analoga this is the outcome of an analogical design process, where architectural fragments are composed in a personal and intuitive way to create spaces which provoke associations.
The analogy - seeing something in proportion to something else - is the method of this design process. It triggers personal associations and opens the mind to new ideas. The result are fragmentary, maybe even contratictory or mysterious images that point to new possibilities of conceiving and creating space.
The gas-station in Wilten is a place with great social potential that exceeds the pure funcionality of gas-stations. Its pupose goes beyond filling up the car with gas. People meet for a car wash, wait for the bus, get a coffee, a beer, a pack of cigarettes at any time of the day.
It is a highly ritualized place which - thought of analogically - becomes spectacular.
This design is an attempt to visualize imagined shapes around the gas-station and to create spacial qualities respresenting its analogical potential.
