Khanjar Dagger with Sheath

Measurements: H. with sheath 19 3/16 in. (48.7 cm); H. without sheath 18 3/16 in. (46.2 cm); W. 3 1/2 in. (8.9 cm); Wt. 13.1 oz. (371.4 g); Wt. of sheath 6 oz. (170.1 g)

The inscription on the blade includes the names of the owner and the maker and the date, A.H. 1151 (A.D. 1689–90).

Losar Fashion in Lhasa: 

I’ve found that one of the best things about Losar here in Lhasa is checking out what everyone is wearing around town. The New Year is a time to show off your new and best clothes, and Tibetans go all out to look good as they walk around the streets. I did my best to capture some of the coolest looks one afternoon.

Shamshir Sword

Dated: first quarter of the 19th century

Culture: Indopersian

Measurements: overall length 80cm

The sword has a flat, curved, single-edged blade of fine damask (wootz) steel, the first part decorated with long, rectangular cartouches featuring inscriptions in Arabic, held by horse and gold plated. At the foible, of one side of the blade, lies a cartouche with signature and date (1812). The back of the blade is entirely decorated in gold.

The iron hilt is decorated with Kofgari floral motifs, the quillon and the langets are decorated with pieced, lily-like flowers, while the pommel features a sword knot. The wooden scabbard has black leather covering with curled outlines and two bands with suspension iron rings decorated en suite.
