I made this pinned post.

I'm not always Florien, but you can call me that and be fairly confident I know you're talking about me. I'm a she, an it, or a they, depending on when you catch me, but never human regardless.

I am excessively dramatic about a variety of things, (as you may have noticed, considering how you got here, statistically speaking. If you did take that route, welcome, it did burn, I cannot recommend the experience, and thank you for making my numbers larger than they otherwise would have been), and have a tendency to have something to say about most things when pressed. Or when not pressed, really.

I have never clicked the like button on a post and I'm not about to start now, nor am I particularly likely to reblog something, for reference. This is almost entirely out of momentum at this point for the likes, but it is because I am generally confident the way I phrase my opinions is better than others could for reblogs. If you happen to be one of my illustriously privileged mutuals, let it be known that me not clicking the like button on your posts is not out of personal contempt, and I do in fact like much of what you do, else we would not be mutuals.

Allegedly I have other tags, but I cannot recall them offhand and do not use them consistently. That aside, most of my stuff is too miscellaneous to bear a tag.

I am generally accepting of asks of any sorts be they questions or not-questions, and will generally get around to them, and often will respond to replies on my posts.

My requests of my followers are very limited, as I tend to believe if you're following me you're at least somewhat open to my ideas, which is a good thing because I (uniquely enough) happen to think my ideas are pretty good. At minimum, if you follow me you think I'm worthy of appearing in your feed every now and then, which is good enough for me. That said, please do not reblog a post of mine which has a substantial tangent (or main body) about the problems of relatively common conspiracy theories specifically to advocate earnestly for a far more ridiculous conspiracy theory in place of the more common ones I am complaining of. That is my one hard rule. Do not do that. I was inspired to finish making this pinned post after years of putting it off foremost so no new followers will do that again.

You know, I think it's nice that when they have an effectively unlimited amount of discretionary money companies tend to blow it on extremely stupid stuff that can't possibly be worth the money they're putting into it.

Amazon owns MGM. They're going to make a james bond movie someday, probably. I hope they include the murder funeral (as seen in live and let die) in it, thus ruining the murder funeral's place as an inexplicable mass-coordination-requiring event that happens twice and has no impact or even really bearing on the plot, taking away everything that made it great

What's the problem in france that it's apparently a political point of tension whether air conditioning should be more widely adopted?

Like heat pumps exist now and are extremely efficient, if they were inclined to invest in air conditioning they could lord superior average air conditioner infrastructure over americans for years to come! "We adopted this late and still have better coverage than you" or something.

I wonder if the stereotypical prospective-or-actual-writer-thing of "I thought of all this writing stuff at 3am" might be because sleep deprivation is a decent antidepressant.

Antitranshumanism is a problem, and it's very obviously a problem because it's the position advocated for by the (invariably on the wrong side of history) catholic church, but even beyond that, most of the counterarguments levied against transhumanism are grounded in "the amish are good actually" (no they're not) and "I read Aldous Huxley's famous book 'zippers are a sign of moral decay' and I think it's an important work of literature that has important things to say about society"

like come on, there's got to be an argument against people being made better that's better than "what if it creates worse class disparities", medicine already is not equally accessible but you don't see (serious) people saying we should ban antibiotics and such because it's easier to get them if you're rich.

I hope ties go out of fashion soon and

well ideally they don't get replaced at all and we have one less bit of standard formal decoration, but if they must get replaced that they get replaced by a decorative cloth that's less of a persistent but minor health hazard in a wide variety of ways to both the individual wearing it and also people around them.

While technically true, for this statement to have any explanatory power several other quite probably false things would also have to be true.

The Bourgeoisie would have to believe Marx is correct about things and a productive read to try this strategy. This seems highly unlikely, Marx is both fairly unpopular and a relatively difficult read.

They'd also have to have class consciousness among themselves: I don't think this is true either.

They'd have to believe that the biggest threat to them is marxism. I don't think that most people actually believe the biggest threat to them is marxism since at latest the 90s, marxism is an ideology of the 20th century, communism has effectively been dead as a force in politics for longer than most people in the world have been alive. (Average Global Age is 30).

Workers organizations would have to believe in communism for this strategy to be an effective strategy. Most don't anymore (see the above about how communism has not been politically relevant since the 90s in most of the world beyond being something you can invoke to scare people).

The implication here of course is that the bourgeoisie developed class consciousness and read marx, decided he was right about most things but must be opposed because it's against specifically their interests, and then spent a lot of time and effort engineering exploitative business practices that don't sound exploitative specifically to screw with the analysis conducted by internet communists, a group that is mostly politically irrelevant, which seems uh

implausible.

I am largely unsympathetic to people who complain about word definitions and meanings drifting over time as they're adopted by new generations or in other contexts outside their original context.

Firstly it's fighting the tides, but secondly it's just fundamentally a trivial issue. Like, people know the strong sapir-worf hypothesis isn't true right? 1984 and redefining dissent out of existence doesn't actually describe an effective form of social control?

I can't think of any reason to care that doesn't sound obviously either intensely self-absorbed (back in my day we only called droop-winged squinders "birds" and now everyone calls any flycreature a "bird" and it's confusing for me specifically) or reactionary (my culture's words for things are the realest and most important versions of those words, all derivations and variants in other languages are necessarily incorrect)

First one kind of tripped me. Unrelated, polynesian artifacts always annoy me because the pacific is so big and we know so specifically where they're from, so invariably if you don't get the correct island you're going to accurately date it and be half the world away from it and get half points.

On the other hand it feels good to get fiji or wherever specifically when you do get the right island.

Fucked up that "congress shouldn't make laws banning a religion" has been interpreted as "religious organizations should be tax-exempt"

Bizarre interpretation frankly. I mean of course it's the interpretation that got went with, (it's the only one that specifically screws only atheists) but it's like, obviously absurd unless you also are willing to assert that a religious organization should be immune to all laws.

I've always wanted to move to the tundra against all reason, but of course there's no jobs in the tundra that aren't mining or fishing and probably it just generally sucks out there.

Anyway they should invent a normal major city in an otherwise intensely hostile environment, I want like, a Fairbanks or Yellowknife but actually good and with people and services and such, so I can go there for a while, and be disabused of wanting to live in the tundra.
