INOUIS WOMAN: MARY NICHOLS

From time to time, we feature a woman, either celebrity or Inouis devotee, whom we feel embodies the spirit and message of our brand. This month, we can’t help but covet the style, creativity and talent of Mary Nichols, the fashion designer and creator of the eponymous fine line of handbags.

Mary, a native of Texas trained at the prestigious Parsons The New School for Design in New York, launched her first collection of handbags in 2008, after working at fashion hubs such as Calvin Klein and Theory in New York City. The Mary Nichols collection includes beautifully crafted totes and clutches in an impressive variety of fine leathers and fabrics. But one of the reasons that make the brand so unique, and a big favorite for us, is the ability to order one-of-a-kind, custom made handbags. Who doesn’t love to play designer for an hour, sit with Mary, brainstorm colors and materials, and end up creating a python bag that perfectly matches a unique pair of shoes or a very special dress? Truly, Mary Nichols brings haute-couture to the world of handbags. 

As a handbag designer who constantly changes bags, Mary is also an Inouis’ Core devotee. In her own words “Staying organized is key for anyone who switches bags often. THE BULGARI HOTEL BALI

While Bulgari is no stranger to the hotel world - their products have been used as bath amenities for years by chains like Ritz-Carlton – the branded Bulgari hotel in Bali marks a departure for the Marriott family. Part of one of their smallest boutique brands, the hotel is one of only two worldwide (another location is in Milan, with restaurants in Tokyo and a new property opening in London in 2012).

At Inouis, we’re naturally fascinated by the merging of two of our favorite kinds of luxury – fashion and hotels –into one seamless form. The goal for the brand is simple – locate the property in the city’s prime luxury neighborhood or most prestigious area of resort destination possible and add in unique physical characteristics to make it even more remarkable. Add in a contemporary Italian luxury influence true to the Bulgari brand and custom-built details befitting a luxury hotel, and you have a truly unique lodging concept.

While Milan’s property is lovely, we’re most entranced by the Bali hotel. Suspended 150 meters above the Indian Ocean, each of the resort’s 59 villas and suites has an unparalleled ocean view along with a garden, pool and an outdoor living room of 300 square meters that looks out over thatched roofs and ocean.

While indulging in luxe spa services (with Bulgari products, naturally) and savoring the cuisine at Il Bar, modeled after the hotel’s Milan original, are certainly great pastimes, we can’t help but love this property even more for its two on-site stores, the Bulgari boutique and the Arts and Crafts store. The Bulgari boutique is the only of its kind in Bali and the resort’s second shop is dedicated to traditional local crafts and gifts along with fine antiques.

The more we consider this property, the more we feel that a vacation in Bali is in our future very, very soon.

GUCCI OPENS ITS MUSEUM IN FLORENCE

Inspired by a stint of menial jobs at London's Savoy Hotel, Gucci’s founder sought to create beautifully crafted goods that would reflect the refined English aesthetics he had witnessed at the Savoy. Almost a century after the luxury brand designed its first line of leather goods, Gucci opened its Museum in Florence.

True to its Florentine roots – Gucci was the son of a Florentine merchant - the newly created museum found its home in the 14th century Pallazzo della Mercanzia overlooking Florence’s treasured Piazza della Signoria.

Throughout the three floors that house indelible snapshots of Gucci’s rich history, visitors can admire Gucci’s famed “bamboo” handbags owned by Jackie Onassis and Sofia Loren along with a vast collection of RTW, accessories and photographs.

More recent pieces include evening gowns created by current Gucci designer Frida Giannini for Hollywood stars Hilary Swank and Naomi Watts.

Curiously, although he definitely played an important role in reviving the brand in the 1990’s, Tom Ford’s mark seems to have been erased from the exhibits.

We look forward to this experience during our next trip to Europe! (As if we needed another reason to visit beautiful Florence!)

LVMH TAKES CONTROL OF ITALY’S BULGARI

The world’s biggest luxury group, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, has doubled its watch and jewelry business after its most recent shopping spree left the group in control of 98% of Bulgari of Italy.

While LVMH’s jewelry portfolio is certainly not its biggest business, Bulgari is a top 3 player in that market and will be a driving force behind LVMH’s bling offerings in the future.

We are excited to see what this new partnership of luxury lifestyle and tradition will bring to our treasure chest!

It’s no secret that Italy is home to some of our favorite designers. But what you might not know is that many of these famed fashion houses have equally luxe hotels that bear their name, ownership or insignia. Here are four of our favorites, just in time for the upcoming Milan Fashion Week:

FASHION WEEK: RACHEL ZOE RTW SPRING COLLECTION

This week Rachel Zoe staged her ready-to-wear Spring 2012 Collection and, in her new designer role, found herself for the first time on the other side of the runway. The presentation included 30 looks said to be inspired by Brigitte Bardot, and showcased tie-neck blouses, high-waisted palazzo pants, leopard prints, Seventies diaphanous dresses,  and jumpsuits. Looks were complemented by Rachel Zoe’s shoes and handbag collection.

FASHION WEEK PART II

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week wraps today, and, while we're sad to see the fashion frenzy come to an end, we know this is only the beginning. We still have fun in Paris and Milan to look forward to.

As the week continued, trends that we spotted in earlier shows continued, with color and prints abounding in addition to white, white, white. Silhouettes remained feminine without being constricting (lots of blousy fabrics that aren't too billowy) and sportswear polished up with a womanly edge continued to make waves. With the exception of shorts, hemlines are longer, even mid-calf, and both knee-length and full-length dresses were popular.

We've chosen images from a few of our favorite shows, including Rodarte, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Narciso Rodriguez, Marchesa and surprise standouts J.Crew and Rachel Zoe (which we are covering on Friday), both of which drew a pleasant celebrity and style insider presence. FASHION REPORT: SPRING 2012 MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK, PART ONE

Good morning, fashionistas! We’re all aflutter over the industry’s big news this week, Spring 2012’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. We spent Thursday and Friday of last week in the city, and let us tell you – trendsetters and fashionistas are excited. Despite the somber occasion of the tenth anniversary of 9/11 falling in the midst of the show week and several designers postponing their shows due to delays from Hurricane Irene, the general tenor of the shows has thus far been upbeat and positive.

It’s a bit early to call the trends, but we’ve seen a number of exciting pieces from collections including ADAM, Vivienne Tam, Victoria Beckham, Charlotte Ronson and Jill Sander. The majority of the looks appear to be still ladylike in style but with a bit more flow and ease of movement than some of the previously constricted styles shown in past seasons. As would be expected with a spring showing, clothing is bright, bright, bright, often bordering on the neon, and pops of color are appearing in heavily printed numbers that are almost vintage in appearance.

From a design standpoint, we can’t help but love Reeves’ commitment to providing a “complete sensory experience.” The packaging is unparalleled, the only in the industry to use meticulously hand-crafted Spanish leather labels along with hand-numbered bottles. Each piece, retailing in the $60-$90 range, is a collectible item. Fans range from Lydnon Lee, former owner of Jimmy Choo, to Sugar Ray Leonard and  Tori Spelling.

Reeves and David Family Wines have also mastered the art of community engagement, donating a portion of proceeds from each bottle to Habitat for Humanity. Want to know more? As summer is winding down, it is time to start transitioning to fall accessories.
