It seems implausible to me that cutie marks form without the input of some intelligent, goal-directed force. How else would our bodies’ magic be able to analyze the psychology of each pony so deeply and be able to choose a symbol representing it? This makes me wonder if there is some kind of intelligence(s) watching over, if not the Universe, Equestria at least. I’m not claiming that any particular religion is true (and I, being a pony, never was religous), but I would love to hear your ideas.
That sounds a lot like the philosophical arguments ponies make for the universe being created by some entity, that something this complex would be so unlikely to occur spontaneously that it must be intentional.
Of course, if the world didn’t exist, or at least not this world, we wouldn’t be here to ponder it. In another world, somepony might make the similar claim that their existence is so unlikely to occur it must be created by something. One can always look back at something that’s happened and think it improbable, but the fact that it did happen is what enables one to do so.
Regardless, just because something is unlikely, doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and I’m not entirely sure the present outcome is any less likely to occur randomly than another. Nor does assuming it’s intentional provide a more satisfactory explanation. Why would this, specifically, be created, rather than something else?
It’s entirely natural to seek patterns and purpose in random events, so I do understand the drive. But simply thinking something seems too improbable to be pure chance is not proof that it isn’t. It is certainly a basis for a hypothesis, but it still has to be proven through scientific rigor.
Still, if ponies want to think some creature designed our world and ponies with symbols on their flank because I suppose it thought that would be neat and finds our struggles amusing they are welcome to do so, but as a scientifically minded pony it’s not something I’m going to consider a given without hard evidence.
Cutie marks aren’t even all that implausible, just one of many ways in which magic changes our outward appearance in response to changes in our emotions, personality and such. And it’s not like magic analyzes our psychology (which would suggest magic itself is capable of thought), rather it is our minds which shape the magic, so it’s really not that different from casting spells, it’s just on a subconscious level.
It’s good to ponder things, consider possibilities, so by all means, continue to do so! Just don’t feel like you have to have definite explanations for everything, it’s fine to not know things. Admitting ignorance is often the wisest thing you can do.
