Day 5: Woodland Site. Glamour shots of Rat #8. You can't really hear it in the video but the buzz of swarming flies were so loud. Day 2: Woodland site. Two Vespula vulgaris (common wasps) feeding on the exposed flesh of one of the rat samples. A little while after this photo was taken two more wasps joined these to eat into the throat. Family: Vespidae. Day 5: Meadow Site. Pardosa amentata, Spotted Wolf Spider (I think??) Family: Lycosidae. Order: Araneae. Class: Arachnida. Found hunting blow flies (Calliphoridae) and Musca spp on one of the rat samples. The spider does not weave a web but instead waits poised to dart and jump toward any prey that comes into sight, piercing it with its fangs. #entomology #dissertation #fieldwork #zoology #biology #science #forensicentomology #arachnida #spider #wolfspider

Day 5: Grassland Site. Ontholestes murinus. Family: Staphylinidae. Order: Coleoptera. A distinctive rove beetle that feeds on carrion and the larvae of other insects on dung. Day 4: Meadow Site. Araneus quadratus (Four-Spot Orb-Weaver). Family: Araneidae. Order: Araneae. Class: Arachnida. Identified by distinctive 4 spot markings on abdomen, and banded legs. This spider builds its web close to the ground to catch jumping insects such as grasshoppers. This sample is male but interestingly females of the species have the ability to gradually change their colour to match their resting surface.
