But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.” 1 Samuel 15:22-23
If you read the word of God, searching only for what seems pleasing to you then you too follow in the ways of Saul. A man who sought after only the desires of his heart, but did not take into consideration the fullness of the Lord‘s commands. In such an action a man is deceived by his own heart, by his own desires to believe that he follows the Lord. But to pick and choose is indeed rebellion, it is indeed like the sin of divination because in divination and in witchcraft, the root is the same - it is control. It says, “ I get to control the outcome, I get to get what I want. I get to do what I want.” such arrogance is like that of the sin of idolatry because it says, “ I know better than God, I can be my own god.” A man’s heart is corrupt when he considers “good things” to be greater than God. A person who truly loves the Lord desires him above all else. We are not called slaves of Christ nor are we called servants but friends. Consider him always in all things.
