The girl’s words suddenly put a bit of perspective into his head. “Do you… Think we’ll even be able to visit it?” The idea of visiting the planet and even living there was fun and magical, but who knew how long it would take for the High Council to allow people to go. He certainly wasn’t going to be at the top of the list. 

Esmeralda looked over the young man and offered him a gentle smile.  She hadn’t mean to scare him with her inner thoughts.  “I think it may be possible,” she reassured with a nod.  “But it also seems like it may take some time.  Are you eager to take your first steps there?” she asked.

Trusty had to admit he loved hanging out with Esmeralda like this, and having her close like this was even better. “You don’t say?” He looked down at her and quirked an eyebrow. “So tell me, Miss Chanterfleurie. What, uh, questions or insights have you brought to your cards lately?”

They walked a short distance before Esme found her usual spot.  She gently unlinked herself from Trusty so that she could retrieve the things in her bag and set up for shop.  Sitting down, she patted the seat next to her on the ground for Trusty to join her.  “Insights and questions?” she chuckled as she brought out her cards and shuffled them.  “Lately I’ve been asking about the well-being of my friends, and for the most part it seems promising.  Are you sure you wouldn’t like to ask them a question yourself?  You may be surprised to see what you learn.  And don’t worry, if you do, your first card reading will be on the house,” she smirked with a small wink.

What effect has the news about the new planet had on the outer ring?

“It’s a grab bag of emotions, really.  Some folks are optimistic that a new planet will mean a fresh, new start for us.  Others believe nothing will change, that our status will remain the same no matter where we are.  And there are those who are concerned that the council will use us to test out the planet’s habitability.  Quite honestly, though, we’re all a little tense to see what the council will do.”

Did you go through any regrettable phases in your youth?

“I was a little more wild in my younger days, though I suppose I haven’t completely outgrown that side of me.  But no, no real regrettable phases because I believe every past action helped create who I am today.”

Bangs or no bangs?

“Whatever rocks your boat, beautiful.  You’ll look wonderful either way!  For me, personally, I like to switch it up every once in a while.”

How do you actually plan to help the people of the Outer Ring?

“Winning the festival is a great step towards that!  I may be just one person, and while I am fortunate enough to not need much, there are so many people in the Outer Ring without adequate resources.  I will tell the council members about how citizens out there are being neglected and it is their duty to protect us!”

Since you won the talent show what is the first thing you're going to say to the High Council Members when you meet them?

“Oh, I have quite a few words for them, particularly about the way resources are distributed for the Outer Ring.  But, I suppose the first thing I should be civilized and offer a greeting.”

What do you think about the new planet?

“It is quite exciting, isn’t it, but I’m sure the ones with the money and the power will be the first ones to colonize it, leaving the rest of us, especially those in the Outer Ring, to rummage for any scrap of resources.  I suppose I’m just both hopeful and weary.”

“Have you heard the news? I can’t even begin to express how excited I am! What do you think the planet is going to be like? There must be some sort of Alien lifeforms if it’s safe enough for us to live there.” Benji asked the person next to him. The article was everywhere but it was just starting to pop up on the large billboards around the square.

Esmeralda chuckled softly, touched by the young man’s enthusiasm for the news.  It certainly was some exciting development and Esme had lots of thoughts about it.  “I think there will be a lot for us to learn,” she replied to his excited string of questions.  “I hope one day that we all get a chance to go there.”

When he saw a form approach from his periphery, he was sure he was about to be reprimanded. At the very least, they were likely here to grab their stuff and try to rectify his bumbling. Instead, a jolt ran through him as a pair of hands wrapped around his own, pulling him up to his feet. Wide eyes met a pair opposite him, filled with concern and worry. Not for the items, not for the stand, but for…him?

It took him a moment to wrap his head around it. “H-huh…? Yeah, I’m…I-I’m f-f-fine…” His gaze dropped to their hands, which he quickly pulled away. Dipping his head slightly, he backed away from her. “I-is this your stuff? I-I’m s-sorry, I didn’t mean– I can c-clean it up–” With that, he was immediately dropping back to his knees to gather everything. His hands and cheeks felt warm.

Esme’s eyes widened with concern as the man tried to clean things up.  “Oh, no no no, it’s okay,” she hushed and reached over to him once more and gently grabbing his arm.  “Someone else can clean this up,” she smiled softly.  “Let’s go over there and get you cleaned up,” she added, hoping to guide him to an empty pocket of space away from the crowds.  She shooed everyone away, trying to give the two of them some air to breathe and maneuver through the crowds.  “Come on, come with me,” she said again with a small smile, her hand gently placed on his arm.

“I’m sure they would be,” he assured. Once they got to the corner he piped up again. “Have you ever looked at your own cards? You can do that, right? Or is it like against the rules of the trade?”

“Of course,” she chimed, holding onto Trusty as they continued to walk, even after they had crossed the street.  “It’s actually recommended to start that way with a new deck and when beginning.  It’s good practice to read my own cards, ask questions that I can answer and build a rapport with my cards.  Gotta make sure the cards actually work,” she said with a wink.

The Summer Festival.

He’d watched it so many years on his monitor, but he never thought he’d actually be here. Everything was so much bigger, brighter, and louder than anything a holographic screen could ever portray. He wandered about in complete amazement, wide eyes sweeping across the vast array of spectacles laid out before him. His mind could barely wrap around the fact that any of this was here in front of him, let alone even consider actually participating in anything.

Unfortunately, the awe came crashing down as he crashed into a display behind him, sending its contents tumbling to the floor. The crowd parted like a rippling affect, stepping away from the intruder and the mess he made. With a gasp, he dropped to his knees and started to gather what he could, desperately trying to ignore the eyes that were on him.

“I-I’m s-s-so sorry! I d-didn’t see where I was g-going! I– I-I–”

The Summer Festival!  Esme wanted to dance around the festival and see all the sights.  Rarely, she would find herself at this sort of event (there was always someone in the Outer Ring that she was helping), but Esme knew it was also an opportunity to meet some people and maybe make a couple of bucks.  Not to mention, there was a talent show!  She could dance away and then maybe get to have a nice chat with the council members about the way they were running things.  Yes, that was her plan.

And as she strolled around, time to spare before her performance, she suddenly heard a loud crash.  Immediately spinning her head, Esme saw the source and the crowd that surrounded the poor soul that was scrambling.  She ran over, pushing past folks to find the person on the ground.

“Oh, you poor thing!” she exclaimed, kneeling down and helping them up.  “Are you okay?”

Trusty extended his arm for Esme to loop hers through. “To the other side then.” At the revelation that she was going to her shop, Trusty nodded. His interest was absolutely peaked. “I’d love to. Still don’t want mine read, though.” Esmeralda’s profession sounded amazing to Trusty, and he respected it. Still, something scared him about being able to know his own future, so he’d rather just watch.

Seeing Trusty’s extended arm, Esme gave him a wide smile that curled the corners of her lips.  She took his arm and allowed him to lead.  “I will never force you to have yours read if you don’t want to,” she chuckled.  She knew that sort of thing wasn’t for everyone.  “But if you ever just have a question that you’re dying for an answer, my cards will be happy to assist,” she remarked as they crossed the street.

Vitani shook her head as Esme sidled up to their target. Really, it wasn’t the act that was bothering her, but rather the three guards stationed a couple feet away from him. But Esme was gone before she could voice any of her concerns and Vitani moved forward, doing her best to blend in with the rest of the crowd. 

Winking at Esme, she took a too short step and went flying forward, her outstretched hand catching on the man’s augmentation. “Ah’m so sorry, are y’alrigh’? Ah was walkin’ an’ suddenly the floor was gone and Ah couldn’ stop mahself.” Vitani began to back away, tucking her small device into a back pocket. She wouldn’t know if the virus had taken hold until she was outside. 

“Oh, you poor girl!” Esme cried out as Vitani fell forward.  She quickly moved to help her, feigning concern.  “Are you okay, dear?  Should we get her a glass of water or something?” she turned back to the man, distracting him as Vitani’s nimble fingers worked.  “Oh, I hope she didn’t ruin our time together,” she sighed, taking her seat once more besides the man.  Her eyes did a quick glance at the augmentation that Vitani had targeted and it seemed quiet so far.  Wanting to keep with the plan, Esme sighed, still pretending to be concerned.  “I’m going to go check on her, darling, and then I’ll be back for that drink,” she added with a small wink at the man.

And just like that, she followed Vitani’s path and found the girl.  She gave her a wide toothy grin.  “Good job, there.”  The guards watched them but kept their distance.  “We should hurry and then leave soon.”

Jim sighs, rubbing at the bridge of his nose. “Look, I’m sorry. There’s just… There’s just a lot to do. Still.”He gestures at the line and the sparks of electricity that flew up from all areas. 

“If you could just leave any broken cybernetics on that table,” He gestures to what might be a table. It’s hard to tell underneath the piles of fingers, hands, toes, feet, legs, and other assorted limbs. “I would appreciate it. The line for broken augmentations is in the back room, and if that’s what’s broken, I’ll get to it as soon as I can.”

Jim turns, looking at Esme for the first time. “Unless, of course, you don’t actually need anything fixed?” The question is bizarrely hopeful, like Jim really can’t believe there’s someone in the Outer Ring who doesn’t have some form of broken technology.

Sensing the stress emanating from the guy, Esme eased up and offered a kind smile.  “Of course, I understand.”  She gracefully dodged another oncoming person before turning her attention back to the person speaking to her.

“Oh, no, not for me.  Getting help for those who couldn’t make it,” she clarified.  Looking around, she could sense how busy it was and it seemed like not much progress was being made.  “I can stick around to help if you’d like.”

Jim’s illegally modified augmentation glowed as he sent a frantic message to his mother, explaining that he wouldn’t be able to make it home tonight, that his workload was just too heavy. As that was sent off, he sighed, turning to face the line of Outer Ring citizens still looking for anyone able to get their technology back to semi-working order after the meteor strikes. 

As he took an old man’s cybernetic arm, his neck prickled, and he turned his head to address the person behind him. “Look, I’m really busy. What do you want?”

Esme knew some of the people she basically mother-hen’d in the Outer Ring were suffering through some technological challenges since the meteor hit.  Especially since the Outer Ring lacked the necessary skills and gear that would fix these sorts of issues, Esme’s protective instincts had her going around to all her connections, searching for some help.

“Hey, Gary, you next card reading will be on me if ya help out the neighbor’s kid,” she bartered, putting on her most charming smile.  It was only after he agreed that she turned to exit but accidentally falling in line for the next group of people also waiting for assistance.

“Whoa, just aiming for the door,” she replied, a little taken aback by the harshness of the other person’s tone.  “No need to snap.”
