Feeling Lucky This St. Patrick's Day!

St Patrick’s day is here! Do you have your green on?

Here in our hometown of Chicago, St. Patrick’s Day has to be the biggest celebration that brings the city outdoors and gets people festive! While Chicago’s festivities are not the largest in the US, they are definitely the most popular. Are we biased? Maybe so... But we weren't ranked as the #1 city for St. Patty’s for two years straight (according to WalletHub) for no reason! We Chicagoans, know how to come together as a community and celebrate. After enduring long tough winters together, we love to share our hope and optimism for spring. While this year has been a little different because of the pandemic, people can still enjoy seeing our beautiful green river flow – whether it be through a window, via screens, or seeing it in person during a walk.

St. Patrick’s Day can also be celebrated at home easily! Bake some shamrock cookies, wear that cute green outfit, pull out some green decor at home and take those pics and vids to share!

Speaking of clothing, I love In-Sattva’s green-toned fashion line for St. Patty’s day celebrations and beyond! There are so many pieces that are 100% cotton which speak to my desire to be an eco-conscious person. Cotton is comfortable, sustainable, and biodegradable.

One thing that caught my eye immediately is the Harem Pants in Green. I own a few of these harem pants and they are sooo comfortable! The drawstring make them easily adjustable and the comfortable fit of the garment make them perfect to lounge around in or dress up. Spring Into Flavorful Kitchens!

     Temperatures are starting to heat up outside as we now hit the beginning of March! Our days are a bit warmer, longer, and there's a fresh new energy around us. 

As temps rise outside, the heat is on here at In-Sattva's kitchen with a fabulous new cookware collection. Can you smell what In-Sattva's cooking? We invite you to come in and take a look - This collection is hot!

     Before we get into this exciting compilation of cookware, we must highlight our one and only Master Chef, Sanjeev Kapoor. This incredible cookware line called Wonderchef was co-founded by Kapoor himself. In case you hadn’t heard the name, Sanjeev Kapoor is one of the most recognized faces in the cuisine of Indian cooking. His decade-long experience of hosting a cooking show called Khana Khazana and being the first chef in the world to have a 24x7 recipe and lifestyle channel, Foodfood, makes him no stranger to the Indian kitchen. In other words, when you hear the name, Sanjeev Kapoor on Indian cuisine you know it's quality and it’s good! 

     Our team here at In-Sattva works hard to showcase his quality cookware. We know that the current pandemic has left many of you spending more time at home and has inspired some creative recipes in the process. We’ve seen pictures of your delicious home-cooked meals online and even had the chance to sample a few.      Our team at In-Sattva is especially thrilled to introduce the new hard-anodized cookware by Wonderchef. What is “hard-anodized”, you might ask? “Anodized” means that the aluminum material has had an electric current added to it allowing oxide to be produced. This oxide makes the aluminum extremely resistant to corrosion or wear and tear. “Hard-anodized” is a further extension of the process conducted at an even higher voltage. Basically, you have an indestructible pan that doesn't scratch, break, or chip! It is stronger than stainless steel and has a nonstick surface that produces quick and even heat. Here are some of the most-loved cookware products from the newest hard-anodized line:  

The Ebony Hard-Anodized Wok with steel lid, aka our indestructible wok, is a beautiful piece in two different sizes - 24 cm and 28 cm. Its wooden handles make it functional to move around and contrast beautifully with the dark ebony color. We love deep frying pakoras and Singapore noodles with shrimp in this wok and one of our staff made an amazing minestrone in it! This wok would be great to cook stews, steam vegetables, and even popping popcorn (the edges of the wok are ideal for keeping the kernels inside)!

 The Hard-Anodized Deep Kadhai Wok is another exceptional product that wowed our team. (Can you tell we love Woks?) This piece also comes in two different sizes (24 cm and 30 cm) and is deeper than the prior hard-anodized wok. A Kadhai isn’t your traditionally shaped wok, it has a flat base which makes it a versatile piece for many different recipes. Our team loves cooking Hyderabadi Biryani, Kadhai Chicken, and General Tso’s Tofu in it!

Last but not least, is our Ebony Nonstick Hard-Anodized Dosa Tawa Griddle Pan. This pan has a heavy aluminum build that has a smooth, even surface ideal for a variety of dishes that typically need to be flipped to cook. This one-of-a-kind tawa pan comes in a 26.5 cm size that makes it ideal for our team’s dosas, crepes, and pancakes. We’ve also made delicious uttapams, flour tortillas, and omelettes on this versatile pan.

My Love Affair with In-Sattva

February is the perfect month to display my love for my latest finds! 

Recently, I bought a colorful Crepe Dosa Pan from In-Sattva. The quality is excellent and the customer service was above awesome. After my little tests that I did, I am glad to share that the team at In-Sattva does everything with their heart and truly has the customer’s needs in their mind. It is so nice to see a company going out of their way to take care of my things! I started as a customer a couple of months ago, and fast-forward to the present - I am writing a blog here! 

     Today marks a special day as writing my first official blog and also getting to celebrate my first Valentine’s Day in the lovely city of Miami! I’m definitely cherishing this time being closer to family and have some thoughts on how I will be celebrating connection and appreciation this month. I love to cook and being at home gives me plenty of time to try out new recipes. This Valentine’s Day, I’m thinking of creating an Indo-Chinese meal of Hakka noodles and Manchurian Cauliflower for my family and getting some of my hubby’s favorite dark chocolate for his sweet tooth. My husband and I have been so busy lately that it would be great to get to sit and watch a romantic Bollywood movie that we both love... played right after a candlelight dinner to create our own special day! I also think of some of my family who live farther away and how it’s been a while since I last saw my siblings and parents. Why not send them a little gift to show them that I care? Love has no boundaries or limitations. Valentine’s doesn’t need to be just for romantic partners... I believe in sharing the love of this season with everyone!

     The Valentine’s season is very colorful with an emphasis on reds and pinks. I love the color red and its significance to Indian culture. It represents auspiciousness and is boldly displayed in weddings, temples, and many festivals. Pink happens to be my favorite color since childhood and if I had my way as a kid, I would have painted my entire room pink from ceiling to floor! (But now, I’m glad my parents didn’t let that happen!) As I think of what to buy for this holiday, I'm drawn to these colors and how they are connected to my roots.

     This gorgeous red and gold tunic looks amazing for a variety of events. I can glam it up with some gold pieces or play with more color by adding some blue and red bangles for a more casual look. I love how it works perfectly for a little family event or can be dressed up for a future in-person Diwali party (fingers crossed). This is a gift to myself on Valentine’s!

     This tunic for men has a beautiful intricate collar that I love. This piece can work equally well as a traditional outfit or more of a semi-casual look paired with jeans. The fabric is comfortable yet adds a special touch to any outfit. This is a perfect gift for my husband - I will wear my red and gold tunic and we will perfectly complement each other for our candlelight dinner date on Valentine’s day.

     Another piece that has caught my eye is this cute and adorable backpack. I love boho print (maybe it's the “Cali Girl” in me) and this little bag works great for my short trips to the farmers market or maybe a future road trip!

    During the last month of winter the weather can be slightly unpredictable and having a scarf on can help to keep warm on a chilly night or can just spruce up an outfit! I love this piece for my niece living in New York. She is the epitome of a young fashionista and reminds me of my younger self, dressed up in pink and soaking up all the attention from those around her.

     As I mentioned before, I love to cook for my loved ones and myself. It's fun, creative, and so satisfying in the end. The Wonderchef Wok is a true kitchen statement piece in a bold red color. It heats up fast and clean up is a breeze... especially when time is of the essence! I look forward to so many delicious meals cooked in this beautiful wok. I have picked this as a gift for my parents living in Oregon. In-Sattva ships fast and that’s a big plus!

     Many of us are at home in quarantine these days, but regardless of where you are, it’s easy to connect through video, phone calls, and sending thoughtful gifts.  With the challenges we’ve experienced over the last year, it warms my heart to spread joy, love, and create memories this month. Navigating Through COVID-19

     During these unprecedented times as Covid-19 spreads rapidly bringing our everyday lives to a grinding halt, it is important that we all stick together and fight this invisible monster in unity. It is a massive adversity but we take courage from our philosopher, none other than Gandhi, who inspires us to fight and stand our ground in the space of current uncertain times. 

     From what started in December 2019 in the city of Wuhan, China, has spread rather quickly throughout the world, thereby gradually increasing the number of cases and the casualties. WHO has recently named this novel coronavirus as Covid-19. 

     In the past few days there has been a dramatic shift in the business landscape. Supply Chains are stuck; cash and credit cycles are logged. As coronavirus spreads, our utmost priorities are to take care of the health and safety of our employees and our customers. In doing so we are taking extra precautions to do our part in preventing the spread of the virus disease. 

Safety First, Family First, is our motto here at In-Sattva.

Some of the precautions we are taking: 

We are implementing work from home for our people to practice social distancing, but continue to bring you new quality products in a safe way.

We are taking extra precautions by disinfecting our dispatch and fulfillment areas. 

We have come up with new plans to get you products from our US warehouses, wherever we can, as per the state’s regulations. We still aim to get you our signature super-fast shipping. 

“Prevention is better than cure” - Ancient Proverb. The worth of this proverb has never been more valuable than in times like now. We here are all yogis and love living a life of goodness, filled with yoga, meditation, proper diet and well-being.

Few best practices to stay fit and well during these times and beyond:  

Diet: As the old adage goes, “eat healthy, eat well.”  Here are some foods that will boost your immune system:

Berries and then some more: contain antioxidants and high in fiber

Oranges: high source of vitamin C and boosts your immune system

Grapefruit: rich in nutrients and an excellent source of Vitamins A and C

Butternut Squash: great source of Vitamins, Minerals, and Antioxidants

Broccoli: a superfood loaded with Vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants

Spinach: a superfood packed with Vitamins K, A, and C

Yogurt:  high in protein and can strengthen the immune system if it contains probiotics

Regular Exercises: Many are home bound during this time but we all can still find daily time in our routines to get home exercises done. Mahatma Gandhi talks about it in his autobiography, that no matter what he made it a habit to walk 30 minutes a day. We all can definitely do whatever workout inspires us.

Deep breathing techniques will also help to fight this virus, which attacks the lungs and the immune system.   

Proper Sleep: during these times it is important that you get a deep proper 7 to 8 hours sleep everyday. 

And of course the most important thing is to wash your hands frequently to protect yourself from any infection. The World Health Organization has put together steps for a proper hand washing technique: https://www.who.int/gpsc/clean_hands_protection/en/

     In this difficult time our hearts go out to everyone impacted by Covid-19. No one knows how long it is going to last; managing our operations here has basically become a day-to-day thing. These are uncertain times but it is important to live in goodness, stay connected with people you know via social media or phone calls (saying hello on the phone to check-in goes a long way), and maintain your safe social distance. 

    We don’t want to bore you with more words, as everyone has been overloaded with info now about Covid-19. Just remember that we are ALL in it together. Together we can flatten the curve.

Chikankari Men’s Designs

     With the holiday season in full progress, many of us are scrambling for gift ideas that will delight.

What is Chikan?

     Our new, curated menswear line pays tribute to Chikan or Chikankari, which means “embroidery,” from the Lucknow region of India. This embroidery style is one of Lucknow’s most revered art forms. While there are many tales of its origin, the Chikankari design can be verifiably traced back to Noor Jahan, the wife of Mughal emperor Jehangir, who brought this Persian art to India in the 17th century. Noor herself was a gifted embroideress, and especially liked this style. The minimalistic, meticulous handwork gives it a very sophisticated feel that today’s embroidery techniques lack, especially with traditionally designed Indian kurta tunics.

Rakhi: The Sibling’s Festival

     Raksha Bandhan, or popularly called ‘Rakhi’, is an annual Indian festival that symbolizes the bond between brothers and sisters. Each year siblings get together to celebrate their bond and pray for each other’s good health. 

A rakhi, which symbolizes protection and prosperity,  is a colorful threaded bracelet that a sister ties around her brother’s wrist. In return, sisters receive a gift from their brother, as a token of love and appreciation. Brothers and sisters are bonded together by a vow to unconditionally protect and care for each other, all manifested by the wholesome Raksha Bandhan festival. 100% Cotton – From India With Love

“Dear Grandchild, stop hanging onto my top and let your Granny finish these lovely pickles before the sun reaches its peak. Come help me out here, please!”  

   Oh! How much I loved the feel of my grandmother’s mulmul (Fine Muslin Cotton) long kurta top during those hot summer days on our patio deck back in India! I yearned to hold onto her beautiful top. I loved my Granny dearly and the way she carried her clothing. The softness and lightness of the cloth has stayed with me all these years, even as I made my way out to sunny California!    My humbleness says that I am not the only one who prefers cotton! The entire Indian sub-continent is a big fan of cotton woven materials. As a matter of fact, cotton has played a big role in India’s independence from British rule. 

   The earliest evidence of cotton and the technique of weaving it on the Indian sub-continent dates back to 5000 BC, in Mehrgarh, Pakistan. Hindu hymns from 1500 BC have also spoken about cotton. Cotton has been used in the form of clothing since prehistoric times by people from India, Egypt and China. In fact, even Alexander the Great couldn’t resist the comfort of cotton when he reached India. 

   Dyeing and printing of cotton fabrics is an ancient Indian art. From Gujarat’s bandhani (tie-dye) to Andhra’s kalamkari (hand/block-printed), the Indian artisans have perfected various techniques of dyeing and hand-printing decorative patterns on cotton using natural organic vegetable colors.

   India’s relationship with cotton turned into a philosophy during India’s freedom movement by Mahatma Gandhi, who popularized the use of ‘Khadi’, a handwoven fabric usually made from cotton. This event is symbolized with a Charkha (spinning wheel) by M. Gandhi’s side. I could go on about the history of cotton, but that is not the point of this blog of mine!

   My love story with cotton, the softest, the lightest and the most organic material on the planet, started from those days with my Grandma time and has lasted until now! Cotton is also one of the most “vegan-friendly” materials! It helps you stay cool in summer because of its light and airy nature. It is very efficient in absorbing our sweat and keeps us odor-free even in the hot sun. It is also the least hypo allergic material, especially for those who have sensitive skin.

   We, at In-Sattva, are obsessed with cotton tunics and tops. Be it for men or women, short or tall, skinny or curvy, cotton looks good on all!

Conscious Eco Choice

     Every day is Earth Day! At least that is what we at In-Sattva believe the mindset should be.

Make sure your car is running in the most efficient manner and be gentle on the brakes. When the time arises, consider upgrading to a hybrid car.

If your employer allows, work from home! Even just once or twice a week will not only save you the commute, but will also cut down pollution.

   Reuse and Recycle:

Use reusable products instead of disposable ones. Surprise your barista and bring your own mug during your next coffee break!

Use the recycling bin. Don’t throw recyclable items in the trash.

Buy your products from sustainable companies (ours included!)

Start a compost

     You might ask why it is important to make eco-conscious decisions. The answer is simple: We love our planet and want it to be clean, beautiful, and around for a long, long time. World’s Most Exuberant Festival!

     Popularly termed as The Festival of Colors or the World’s Happiest Event, Holi gatherings are a sight to behold! 

If you haven’t yet participated in this celebration, maybe it’s time. Holi is certainly the most exuberant of all Indian cultural festivals with many gatherings consisting of live music, dance performances, and play of colored powders and water balloons on the participants.

     Holi heralds the arrival of spring and end of winter (thank God for that here in Chicago!), but the main underlying intention is to promote unity and friendship in the community, and to repair broken relationships. There are many mythological stories surrounding the origin of Holi; huge bonfires are burnt on the actual day of Holi (this year, per Lunar Calendar, it falls on March 2nd.) The excitement and fun is actually on the following day when people gather and play with colors and water. In India, it is an official bank holiday. No matter the age, people enthusiastically participate in this annual vivid array of colors.

     Many believe that the best Holi celebrations in India happen in the cities of Mathura and Vrindavan and in the Golden Triangle tourist circle of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. In the pink city of Jaipur, there is also an Elephant Festival with painted elephants and elephant polo!

Tandoori Turkey Masala: Our Family’s Thanksgiving Way!

     Thanksgiving is the one holiday where I can bring all sides of the family under one roof.  

After getting married a few years ago, my goal has been to unite both my husband’s and my own family to celebrate a holiday together. Family reunions have been a challenge in the recent years, as all of us now live in different states across the country; though Thanksgiving has always been our go-to reunion weekend. The one commonality that both sides of my families share is our love for spicy, flavorful food! A few years ago, my brother-in-law found a recipe on Bon Appetit for a tandoori flavored turkey and it has been a hit with the entire family.

     On my husband’s side, both his mother and sister are vegetarian. They prepare Indian and American vegetarian dishes for our Thanksgiving meal.  Last year, they prepared vegetarian enchiladas and chana masala. Family members on each side pair up and prepare a couple dishes, so no one person is left preparing the entire meal. Even with all of these delicious side dishes, the annual tandoori turkey once again steals the show! I personally consider my family’s Thanksgiving to be a fusion of old and new traditions, as we have many generations of family members celebrating together. (So much like the colorful fusion clothes that our company specializes in!)

   My brother-in-law is the family member in charge of making the turkey, and over the years, the final product just keeps getting better and better. As previously mentioned, we enjoy our meals extra spicy so feel free to modify the ingredients to your liking. To save time, you can prepare the tandoori and garam masala up to a month ahead. Be sure to also have an instant-read thermometer on hand, as you will need it to make sure the roasted turkey reaches the appropriate temperature. To create the turkey and marinade, here is what you will need:

   Please note that the below recipe is adapted to make it EXTRA spicy and without the Cinnamon.

Ingredients:

Tandoori Masala

2 1/2 tablespoons coriander seeds

2 tablespoons cumin seeds

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns

1/2 tablespoon ground cardamom

2 1/2 teaspoons chili powder

1 ½ teaspoon dried fenugreek

1 teaspoon whole cloves

1/2 teaspoon Ajwain seeds

Garam Masala

24 bay leaves

3 tablespoons black cardamom

2 1/2 tablespoons cumin seeds

2 1/2 tablespoons black peppercorns

1 1/2 tablespoons green cardamom

2 tablespoon coriander seeds

2 teaspoons Ajwain seeds

2 teaspoons whole clove

 Turkey

1 12–14-pound turkey

1/4 cup salt

5 black cardamom pods

5 green cardamom pods

1 1/2 tablespoon cumin seeds

2 medium red onion, chopped

2 celery stalks, chopped

4 garlic clove

 Marinade

4 cups (1 quart) plain whole-milk yogurt

1 cup chopped peeled ginger

1/2 cup fresh lime juice

1/4 cup finely chopped garlic

1/4 cup paprika

2 ½ tablespoons tandoori masala

2 ½ tablespoons garam masala

2 ½ teaspoons chili powder

1 ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

 Preparation:

Tandoori and Garam masala:

    First start by preparing the tandoori masala and garam masala. For the tandoori masala, combine the ingredients listed above in a skillet over medium heat and toast for 2-5 minutes, stir occasionally. Let the mixture cool. Repeat the same steps for the garam masala. Using a spice mill, grind the both mixtures as finely as possible. Drain the mixtures using a mesh-strainer.  The tandoori and garam masala are a part of your ingredients to make your marinade!

Turkey:

   Wash and pat turkey dry with paper towels. Rub inside and out with salt; transfer to roasting bag. Stuff the turkey with cardamom pods, cumin seeds, onion, celery, and garlic.

Marinade and Final Product:

   Combine all the ingredients for the marinade and blend until smooth. Pour marinade into roasting bag and cover all over the turkey. Tie bag and arrange turkey, breast side down, in a large heavy roasting pan and refrigerate overnight. Our modification: we do not refrigerate the turkey overnight, but instead, let the turkey stand in the roasting bag at room temperature for about 1 hour.   

   Before roasting the turkey in the oven, create steam holes in the roasting bag if required by the manufacturer's instructions. Preheat oven to 400° and roast the turkey for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 350° after 30 minutes. The turkey should roast until an instant-read thermometer is inserted into the thickest part of the thigh (puncturing bag with thermometer) and registers to 160°, which will take about 1 1/2 hours longer. Cut top of bag open, being careful of steam and juices(hot!). Roast turkey until breast is deeply browned and a thermometer inserted into thigh registers to 165°, which should take about 15–30 minutes longer.

   Remove the turkey from the oven and let it sit for about 20 minutes. ou can strain the juices from the bottom of the roasting pan and create a sauce by heating the mixture in a separate pan for 20 minutes over medium heat. This is what we use as “gravy” and we love our turkey extra juicy and spicy! Now for the good part - transfer over the turkey to the dish that it will be carved and served in. Enjoy Thanksgiving with your favorite people!  

   Since several of our family members will not be feasting on the tandoori turkey, being vegetarians, we generally have a sizable amount of leftovers that last about a week. You can store the remaining turkey in airtight Tupperware in the fridge and reheat whenever you are ready for some more! And most importantly, don’t forget to give gratitude to the wonderful year that you have had, and all the family and friends that you are surrounded by, and grateful for this Thanksgiving. Do spend time sharing with everyone the things you are thankful for in your life, as who knows – tomorrow may be too late.

     When I’m running late for work or a social event I immediately grab a pair of dark skinny jeans and pair it with a black oversized sweater and boots. My goal is to walk out of the door looking both classic and effortless. Teachings from my father

     A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way. – Unknown.

     My name is Breanna. I am the lead graphic designer with our cozy colorful company, In-Sattva, and here we usually take turns to come up with timely and relevant blogs. I jumped on to this perfect occasion to pen some of my thoughts as a tribute to my father on his special day!

     My dad, who is half-German, is a thoughtful and a quiet man. He is always in a good mood, is never one for long lectures, and rarely gets mad. Below I want to share three of his teachings that stand out for me as I navigate through my life and share a bit of my story.

     1. Family first. The very first thing that came to mind when writing this is that he taught me what it means to truly be a hard worker and care for the entire family. Apart from his business, he has worked hard at home taking care of our family, leading us through some hard losses and unfortunate circumstances. He and my mom worked tirelessly at teaching my sisters and I how to be good people in life. He worked hard at making sure he could take us on fun vacations and travel; at making sure we grew up in a good loving home; making repairs and creating things for us, like dressers for our room which I truly appreciate to this day. I try to mimic that kind of work ethic in my life as I saw first-hand how valuable it is to our family.

     2. Be your own and be creative! He taught me how to be creative and that it’s more fun to do things yourself even if you try and fail at it. If my dad could figure out how to do it himself, he would. When we moved, he finished the entire basement by himself and built us a deck. He fixes our cars, he paints the walls, he mows my family’s 1½ acre property and snow plows (and unfortunately sometimes has to shovel. In Chicago, that can be many times!) our very long driveway. It’s not even all about saving us money, it’s mostly because he likes to do it. Now that I’m older I can see that I have become just like him. If I see something that I like or something that needs to be done, my first thought is always “Can I make that (or do that) myself?” This example from my father has helped me a lot at my work. I love being creative and I love that he showed me this great outlet for being able to use my artistic skills in a useful way.  

     3. Be calm and be clear through thick and thin. Life has thrown many curve balls. My dad is one of the wisest people I know. There have been plenty of times when I’ve been in situations where I need some help, and I have looked to him for wise counsel and a shoulder to lean on. He speaks with such calm and thoughtfulness that it’s almost impossible not to listen to him. He has a way of presenting intelligent responses with clarity and has an amazing way of getting you to think things through for yourself. I can only hope that when I have kids of my own I can provide the same safe space for them to come to and to be able to guide them gently in the right direction.

     Can there possibly be any words that can truly describe a mother? A super-woman, a one-man army, selfless, loving, caring. 

These words and many more do describe her, but only a bit and does not do full justice to what an incredible person she is!

     For me, Mother’s Day is a very important day of the year to remember what my Mom has done for me. Although she is a few thousand miles away currently,  she is always in the front of my mind. I feel a deep sense of gratitude toward her every day but during this time of the year it increases even more.

CITY FOCUS – JAIPUR

     Our endeavor to bring you the best in artisan crafts takes us to some of the most splendid cities in the world. 

One of the perks of working in buying and merchandising is to explore what is out there and get the best picks for our customers. This time around, our buyers were scouring the arid deserts of India,  in a bid to identify and bring you contemporary international trends, right to your doorstep in the US. We were super excited to travel in India to the state of Rajasthan to design, develop and source the most vibrant collection for our consumers for Summer 2017.

     As we traveled to one of India’s most beautiful and magnetic cities, we wanted to bring forth not just exclusive products, but also the essence of the city – Jaipur, fondly called the Pink City.  For all its resplendent architecture in colored stone, Jaipur captivates travelers with its bounteous charm. 

     Tracing Jaipur’s textile tradition back to the 3rd century, the city is the world’s epicenter for block printed textiles (which we absolutely love!). The city  is especially known for traditional hand block printing (bagru) and natural dyes. Their indigo-dyed products are truly remarkable! Also recognized for expertise in tie-n-dye, Jaipur’s Bandhani technique is famous the world over. Skilled artisans in this city also excel at handcrafted textiles, replete in mirror-work and embroidery.

     Not only is Jaipur rich in traditional Indian textiles and handicraft products, but it also contains some great experiences and vistas that are bound to capture a visitor’s attention.

     As we made our way through the city, we compiled our top favorites for you to help guide you through this glorious city:

(1) Take in the history at the old city      Abounding in royal residences and forts, Jaipur’s Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) is perhaps one of the most photographed sights in the city. Five diminishing pyramidal stories made of pink stone, wood and colored glass, it was originally built as part of the City Palace, which forms the center of the Old City and is a complex labyrinth of courtyards, gardens and structures.

Approx time: 2 to 3 hours. Recommended to go in the late afternoon when the surrounding Bazaars are buzzing.

(2) Ride a hot-air balloon      Soar above the city as you take in a bird’s eye view of all its best attractions. We recommend you go as the sun sets when the mighty forts, palaces and landscape below turn into a sea of reds and golds – it is a joy to behold!

Approximate time: 1 hour

(3) Go on a Safari      Enjoy the rustic setting and the wilderness of Jaipur as you hitch a ride in a Jeep on off-beat dusty paths. For those who are more adventurous, experience life among the untamed as you view deer, jungle cats and other predators in their natural habitat. Alternately, ride through the countryside and choose to take the idyllic routes on horseback.

Approximate time: 3 to 5 hours

(4) View an observatory      Step back in history as you garner the ancients’ sense of time, with the world’s largest sundial. Dating back to the 18th century, Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, works on the principles of using the sun and shadows to measure astronomical movements to tell time. A two-fold marvelous observatory, walk among the mammoth instruments, not only for the amazing science but also the modern beauty emanating from them.

Estimated time: 2 to 3 hours. Recommended to combine the trip with the Hawa Mahal visit.

(5) Shop at the Bazaars and eat local cuisine      Experience the authentic food in the scores of markets dotting the city and head to Badi and Chhoti Chaupar for an array of interesting artifacts. Brass ornaments, silver jewelry, textiles and wooden furniture are among the many relics that catch tourists eyes purchase at a good bargain.

     Witness the Rajput hospitality and lifestyle come alive at Chowkidhani, with its cultural activities and delicious cuisine. Gorge on a lavish, fulfilling meal as you relish a selection of traditional dishes.
