I don't want to explicitly tie sex into surgery for Noland, because a lot of Noland's surgeries are genuinely just for scientific research and curiosity... though I also feel like that's sort of the best way to go here? Surgery as an allegory for sexual liberation. Or something. Putting him into a body he feels beautiful in, yes, but also surgery as an act with a more intimate nature! He's not someone actively seeking a partner, but if he finds one? He wants a partner willing to cut him open! Willing to help him out and explore the newfound aspects about his body with him! While he's not opposed to the idea of sex, surgery is much more intimate of an idea to him compared to traditional intercourse.

To have someone tell him he's the most beautiful specimen in the world while he's laid bare on an operating table, with no hesitation to get Noland's blood upon their hands -- it's vulnerable! It's a sign of trust in his partner! It's intimate to feel someone else's hands slipping beneath his skin! To give him another dose of painkillers when he feels the first dose starting to wear off! Besides, why shouldn't aftercare consist of tenderly stitching him up and bringing him an ice pack and water? He wouldn't be nutting from surgery but he most certainly does get a little bit hot and bothered at the idea of Erotic Surgical Theatre. Surgery can be... I dunno, foreplay? An intimate act.

When it comes to more traditional sex, I feel like his fantasies are more... Buggy in nature. He wants his partner to see him as the most beautiful insect in the world! Noland absolutely does not want to be referred to as a person when in such intimate situations, and while it is affirming to be referred to as a man in bed, he wants to be referred to as how he prefers to truly refer to himself - a bug! A specimen! An insect! A dragonfly! He has zero interest in any partners who won't entertain his insectoid nature.

He wants someone who will brush away his hair and comment on how cute his antennae are! Who will run their knuckles along the unique musculature of his back and speak of how gorgeous his exoskeleton is! Talk about how beautiful he'd look pinned like an insect and his buggy heart is absolutely melting. He wants someone who notices the way his wings subtly flutter when he's flustered, who will give him a little kiss on all four of his hands! Someone who will comment on how beautiful his ovipositor is! He's been pondering the idea of giving himself mandibles, so to have someone tell him just how gorgeous he'd look with them...

Now he absolutely is not a cannibal, but the sexually cannibalistic nature of many insects is something he does consider and it is something that plays into his behaviours. Noland DOES bite and he DOES leave marks and he is 100% fantasizing about what it would be like to consume a partner's flesh out of buggy love -- you love me so much that you'd give up part of you for me! I don't think he'd have it in him to quite commit and fully go through with it, even if offered on a silver platter, but the thought of it does make his wings flutter!

( He hasn't quite realized that, as a man, he'd most likely be the one being eaten in whatever buggy scenario he's brewed in his head... )

With regards to more traditional sex headcanons... when he's bottoming then he is either on his stomach, or he's on his back on his operating table, because his wings are a bit awkward and will NOT fit anywhere else :( Noland does occasionally top AND penetrate but his ovipositor is a little bit awkwardly angled for it? Loves the idea of riding a partner, because then they can look up at him and see how beautiful he is! Tell him he's gorgeous!!! No degradation towards him, only praise!!!

Noland has none! He is broke! End of story!

He can always manage to scrounge up the cash for what he needs, and he's happy to live off cheap staples — 60% rice, 30% chicken that was half-off at the supermarket because it was expiring the next day, 10% frozen vegetables — but any spare cash he has gets funneled into supplies for his surgical exploration.

Many of the things Noland owns are secondhand, are relics from the 90's, bought at flea markets and garage sales. Can't go wrong with a 40 year old slow cooker that he got for 5 dollars! Estate sales, secondhand stores, yard sales -- he's there. Torrented research papers and entomology books, extreme couponing tendencies, bugging acquaintances for discounts on services -- he's cheap!

When it comes to anything beyond his personal necessities... Noland is the world's worst tipper. Hates the idea of handing over a tenner for gas money, rarely eats out — if ever.

He carries no debts, thankfully -- he fully owns his own land and can grumble about his utilities and nearly nonexistent property tax all he wants, but there's no other owed payments weighing on his shoulders. No mortgage, no student loans still owing.

For where he gets his money? Unfortunately for Noland, there's not much money to be made in cataloging clicking beetles and performing surgeries on himself for fun, so yes -- he does have a little bit of a part time job. A very, very unsteady one. Pest control is his main source of income, spread by word of mouth. Termites? Ants? Wasp nest in your crawlspace? He's there, using those entomology brain cells of his to get the job done. Mouse problem? Fuck it man sure he can do that too, a mouse is a type of bug for these purposes. Plenty of work to be had in the summer, not so much in the off season.

( It should be noted that Noland does have the skillset for remote work, to find himself a better source of income -- but he'd rather stick with his own schedule, it gives him more free time for his hobby! )

He's got a modest savings account that lasts him through the winter, but beyond that? There's a reason why he has to use his older looks at the end of his moulting cycle to swindle senior discounts wherever he can.
