More 50m work tonight.
872 26X
My fourth 900 round.
Got a little more work in at 50m tonight. Shot better than last night, but not quite as well as I was a week or two ago. I realized tonight that it's easier to hold proper back tension when I concentrate on drawing the bow straight back. I can hold more steady when I'm holding more of the bow's weight with my back.
875 25X and 325 5X
Shot another 900 round today and 36 arrows at 50m. It was a bit breezy which made for a little extra challenge and some good practice. I was spraying them around a bit unfortunately. I'm having a bit of trouble holding still as I'm pulling through my shot. I think I need to do a bit of blank baling too.
883 34X
I shot another 900 round tonight and improved my score. I almost "cleaned" the 40-yard ends with only one dropped point. In spite of an 8 at 50 yards, I feel good about this score.
877 30X
I decided to try shooting a 900 Round which consists of 30 arrows each at 60, 50, and 40 yards using a 122-cm multicolor target. Not bad for a first effort.
I'm trying a few different things at the end of the outdoor season. I put a small orange dot on my lens instead of the TrueSpot Double Vision system I've been using for about a year. It's a bit of a tricky transition. The thing I like best about the double vision system is that I can look right at the X instead of covering it with the dot.
I shot 72 arrows at an 80-cm target from 50m tonight just like they do in the qualifying rounds at international World Cup events. It went pretty well except for a lousy 6 toward the end. Yikes.
Just for kicks I looked up the scores for the qualifying rounds from this year's World Cup event in Shanghai. My 675 would have qualified me 62nd out of 68 archers. I guess I have some more work to do.
I got a chance to go out to Yankton, SD in early August to shoot in my first outdoor national championship shoot. I had a great time and achieved all my goals, setting new personal bests in all three field archery disciplines. I finished 22nd our of 41 overall in the men's amateur freestyle division. My individual rounds put me tied for 25th in field, tied for 19th in hunter, and 28th in animal.
I had a great time, and I hope to be able to shoot in the event again soon.
264 28X
Had a rough practice tonight. I took a 0 on the 80-yard walkup when I forgot to change my sight for the 50 yard shot. Would have been a decent rough otherwise, but I made some silly mental mistakes.

Tied my personal best on an animal round tonight in my final field league score of the season. My new marks seem like they're right on which gives me some confidence going into this weeks NFAA Outdoor Nationals in Yankton.
273 23X
My sight is still a bit messed up, and I found myself adding clicks on almost every shot. But I still managed to shoot a new personal best hunter round. So I'll take it.
I need to spend some time on the practice range this weekend checking my marks.
266 18X
Not a great round tonight. My arrows were hitting low even though I kept adding clicks. I think I need to check my marks tomorrow and possibly print a new, slower set of sight marks.
2014 MAA/NFAA Minnesota Field Championship
I won. It was my first archery win. I shot pretty well against some good competition and came away with the win. Pretty cool.
267 21X
Decent night at league tonight, but not great. It's hard to get past the expectation that every round will be near my personal best. Two 17s aren't going to get it done.
I did a little practice at 50m tonight. I haven't shot much on the multicolor faces since last summer's Voyageur Cup. It was great to see some improvement over what I shot then. I scored 335 out of 360 today, a full 23 points better than the 312 I shot last summer at the same distance. One particularly bad shot that hit just into the red at six o'clock was the only arrow out of the yellow.
288 8X
New PR tonight for the animal round. Better by 4 points, in fact. I guess it was one of those nights when even the less than perfect shots find a way to the spot. I'm not complaining.
Did my first 3D shoot today without really meaning to. I'm in Winona visiting family (a long tradition) and noticed that the local archery club was hosting their annual July 4th 3D shoot. I've never shot 3D before, have never tried to judge yardage, and I only had my skinny field arrows with me. (I've read about how to judge yardage, but that's not quite the same.) I emailed yesterday and asked if range finders were allowed at this shoot. (Thanks to my buddy for loaning his range finder for the weekend so I could set up my practice target more easily at my in-laws' place.) I was told that range finders were fine. It's a casual, fun shoot. No problem then.
When I got to the shoot this morning I noticed the not so fine print on the score card that said "NO RANGE FINDERS." Hmmm… I asked the nice person at the check-in table about it, and she told me that I could go ahead and use one. I didn't feel right about it. I wasn't there to just shoot for fun without turning in a score, and I certainly wasn't going to use a range finder and then turn in a score having done so. I decided to give it a go and put my theoretical yardage judging knowledge to the test.
I connected with a guy who was also by himself and who kindly explained the scoring to me. I was pretty shaky at first. I was judging almost all of them too short. (I did check some of them with my range finder after I shot my arrow.) If I was close I got a 20, but I often misjudged badly and took a 5.
Note: They used a 20-15-5-0 scoring system for this shoot. The 10-ring scored 20, the 8-ring scored 15, the rest of the body scored 5, and a miss was 0. They didn't count the 12-ring for anything, but I kept separate track on my scorecard by marking an X for any 12-ring shots.
Further note: Watch the arrow on the score card. I shot the first two targets then skipped to #15, finished the back half, and then completed the rest of the first half.
My judging started improving, and I made a lot of good shots toward the end (targets #3–#13).
This seemed to be a relatively difficult shoot. There were a lot of targets across gullies which made judging the yardage quite a bit harder. There were quite a few uphill and downhill shots, and a bunch where I had to judge and then shoot through narrow openings between trees. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how I shot, and I came home with the same number of arrows I started with.
I also came to appreciate the larger scopes and fiber pins that 3D shooters use. My small target scope and double-vision TrueSpot scope didn't work very well. There were a lot of instances where I could hardly make out the target when it was sitting in the shadows. I'm sure more light would have helped my score a bit.
I looked at the scorecard and converted my score to what I think the ASA does (i.e., 12-10-8-5-0). That puts me at 38 down for 29 targets. I'm pretty sure I won't have the lowest score of the day.
