i’m going through the photos and footage I collected from my first visit to Austin and my first SXSW and my first time spinning live and FUCCCK i’m obsessed.
SouthX completely exceeded my expectations as a music festival. Since I turned liiiike 24 I’m pretty into not camping unless its not a cluster fuck. Don’t get me wrong- camping is the shit- but apartment + festival is my jam right now, or at least since Pitchfork last year.
The last set I saw in Austin was Erykah Badu and it apparently was the last show at the Austin City Music Hall :O The last time I saw her was Bonnaroo 2009 and her DJ set made me definitely want to switch to turntables from my Pioneer we go. Although i LOVE MY PARTY IN MY BACKPACK!!!!!!!! When I landed today in Denver my homegirl- or I guess ex now-who has been giving me shit for months because I wear my hear in box braids and have worn a bindi that I think black culture is trendy, so yeah I got friend dumped. All I can do is learn and listen from her experiences. Coveting your culture is a backwards mentality and just as SXSW demonstrated by featuring musicians from all over the world, there is a way to celebrate and share cultures that honors their history. One of my favorite acts at the Hotel Vegas was a rock band with a woman rocking a hijab owning that venue. Muslim Rock is whats up. It really hurts when someone you considered a friend sees you as the enemy. She thinks I am making ignorant cultural gestures and I think she is making only statements that would make Dr. King cringe. If she had ever paid attention to when I described where I was from I wouldn’t feel so perplexed but being from Rockford, Illinois and being told I think black culture is trendy is pretty ignorant.
I checked out the Illmore and saw some Save Money crew faces. Kehlani, Alan Kingdom, and Dram also performed and inspired the fuck out r&b singing for millennials. I read about how Zoe Kravitz recorded her Lola Wolf album and I’m about to crank out something here while I am back in Colorado. I’ve had this back burner project stoking at the furthest end of my brain for...as long as Synj history spans..... G L I T T E R
