But he could understand how his current state, and lack of sobriety could convince her otherwise. ❝ It’s no problem. ❞ But how would she actually know if it was? It’s not like she knows where he lives. Honestly though? Anything sounds better than going home right now. Home is where temptation lives, where the blandness of every day life makes her want to drown her boredom in smack. She picks up her keys, twirling them between her fingers, a nervous habit that goes unnoticed. ❝ Mind if we stop for a drink? Or are you too wasted for more? ❞

Technically, he’s not drunk enough to stumble ( not that he didn’t appreciate a little bit of aid, though ). It was most likely a mixture of the alcohol and exhaustion that gave him such an appearance. ❝ —- You’re closed? ❞ Well, now he was just embarrassed – usually he had an expert eye for detail ( blame it on the alcohol ).  ❝ Uh – sorry, guess I should do a better job reading next time. We? No – I think I can do it. ❞

It’s not entirely his fault that the “closed” sign was missed- its made of cheap paper, with the edges curled until the meaning is distorted. She gives him the benefit of the doubt, realizing that he might not be quite as drunk as she’d estimated. It’s habit, really, to automatically assume that customers who have drunk are bound to be assholes. Like that dude who slapped her ass the week before, now he had been wasted. ❝ —Hey, my car is right on the curb. I can drive you home, and then maybe you can come back tomorrow and get that tattoo. It’s kind of a big commitment to make, isn’t it? ❞

Jane’s fault- she’d forgotten to lock the damn door, and now the drunkards are swarming in like a posse of bees. The guy is stumbling erratically, and she can almost taste the liquor on his breath. Before he can loose his footing, Jane places her palms on his shoulders, steading him as best as her slight frame will allow. ❝  –Whoa there. I think we need to get you home, yeah? ❞

    Jaw tightened a bit as he stared at the cigarette between her finger before back at her gaze. As much as he would have allowed it, the owner was in his office in the back and knew he could be out any minute. “ Perhaps you can tell the owner who is out back that. I can go grab him for ya. ”

                 Another spitefully long drag of her cigarette. Jane might look like trouble, but she complies with the threat, stubbing out the burning stick and releasing one last huff from her lungs. ❝  –You always such a hard-ass? ❞ There’s a hint of amusement in her tone, faint but still existent. The deceased cigarette hangs loosely from between her digits. It’s normal, to obsess over one addiction after another has been kicked. Smoking is that for her.

            Here’s a plot twist for you: Jane Margolis, the sponsor. She never wanted the title, and the responsibility scared the fuck out of her. Her own sobriety seems to permanently hang by a tiny thread that could be broken by a faint wind. Still. There’s something about Gabriel that convinced her to give it a shot. Maybe it’s because she has a feeling he could get his junkie hands on some excellent smack, or maybe she saw herself reflected in him. But most likely it’s because her father trusted her even more now, all proud and excited that his little girl is finally doing a good deed. 

            Gabriel had rung up her cell when she was in the shower, and the guilt from missing the call was eating her up inside. So here she is, black jacket swung over her shoulders, and knocking on his door. “Gabriel?”

“FUCK! No, no, no, you don’t, Janey!” Damn it all— leave it to Jane to overdose when Harley’s out. Clearly she needed to get better at hiding her stash. “Hey–, c’mon, you stay with me,  yeah? You’re not dying on me. We’re only halfway through our binge marathon of Law and Order SVU!”

              She doesn’t want to die. You see, it’s never been about that. She’s flirted with death, made love to it, held its cool fingers in her palms. But never has she wanted to embrace it. It’s just an unfortunate side-effect to the lifestyle that she’s chosen since the tender age of sixteen. Jane’s too fucking out of it to know she’s overdosing, of course. Yet, on some plane of consciousness, she can feel life slipping from her slender digits, swifter than fickle sand. Mere moments stand between her being a human and her being a corpse.

              No response. Just more shakes, more trembles as this world and the next battles for her.

       he’s known her for a while now and yeah, the dad thing was a little weird but he just figured maybe she wasn’t ready to introduce him yet. (it took a little denial, but he convinced himself that she just wasn’t ready yet… not she was embarrassed by him. she just wasn’t ready.)

           love. a cringe threatens to manifest on pixie features, to betray the cool composure jane’s trying to maintain throughout this whole conversation. jesus, did he have to throw that word in her face? she tries to tell herself it’s just an unfortunate piece of his vocabulary, as meaningless as any of his other trademark musings, but the warmth in his eyes conveys a much more serious tale. 

            he’s made the grave mistake of falling in love with her, and jane is too goddamn selfish to really stop him. so she kisses him instead, crimson lips swallowing his mouth, urgent and needy. anything to keep him from realizing that she’s miles and miles away from feeling the same way about him. she’s just not ready for love.
